I\u2019m simply saying sure, I\u2019ll\u200b go \u2062to the restaurant, eat with you and\u2062 enjoy \u2063each other\u2019s company. Yet, once seated, I\u2019m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jean-pierre-insists-white-house-not-involved-with-twitter-censorship-psaki-said-the-opposite-last-year\/\" title=\"Jean-Pierre Insists White House \u2018Not Involved\u2019 With Twitter Censorship. Psaki Said The Opposite Last Year.\">routinely asked<\/a>\u2062 to share.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Let\u2019s get some things to share.<\/h3>\n<h3>Let\u2019s get an appetizer to share.<\/h3>\n<h3>We can split the check.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No! Let\u2019s not! The hell we can!<\/p>\n<p>To friends, family,\u2064 and colleagues\u200d \u2014 past, present, and future \u2014 I don\u2019t want to\u2064 be rude. In fact, assuming\u200c that \u200dwe\u2019ll each order what we\u2019d\u2062 personally like for ourselves and that we\u2019ll pay for those things\u200d on our own is the\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-susan-collinss-praise-for-bidens-scotus-pick-irks-senate-republicans\/\" title=\"Why Susan Collins\u2019s Praise for Biden\u2019s SCOTUS Pick Irks Senate Republicans\">polite thing<\/a> to do. On the other hand, putting me\u200b in the uncomfortable\u200b position of potentially having to say, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t want\u200d to split the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/please-dont-ask-me-to-dinner-and-then-want-to-split-an-entree\/\" title=\"Don't invite me for dinner and expect to share one entr\u00e9e.\">raw ground \u200dbeef<\/a> you\u2019ve just referred to as \u2018steak tartare&#8217;\u201d\u2014\u00a0well, that may require some self-reflecting on your part.<\/p>\n<p>There is apparently some widely\u200d held belief that \u2063agreeing to dine out with others comes \u2062with the expectation that splitting \u200ddifferent things is part of the fun\u2014\u00a0the\u2062 <em>experience<\/em>. Someone tell me where exactly that is\u200d written.<\/p>\n<p>You may certainly try<em> <\/em>a<em> piece<\/em> of my food. You may have<em> <\/em>a<em> sip<\/em> of my beer. (I don\u2019t \u2063order \u201ccocktails,\u201d which are a scam.) That should be enough.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing creates\u200c problems. We may not like the same things. I may \u200bwant more than you. I may have a bigger appetite. What I order might \u200dbe exponentially more expensive than what you order.<\/p>\n<p>And then it\u2019s considered tacky to acknowledge any one of these \u200bpredicaments \u200cbecause \u2014 <em>we\u2019ve\u200c gone\u200b out, \u200band this is supposed to be\u200d fun, and\u2064 why are you ruining a good time, you wet blanket!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m\u200c sorry, but\u2026 no!<\/p>\n<p>I want the South African \u2062lobster tail, and you want the little Ethiopian paste with crackers. I\u2019m having an IPA, and you\u2019re \u2064fine with water. Do \u2064you really want to split the check? \u2062Because I\u2019m sure as hell not splitting the lobster. Enjoy the water and \u2062smeared bread, though!<\/p>\n<p>The whole concept of shared dining is straight out of <em>The Communist Manifesto<\/em>. From each according to his \u2062appetite, to each according to, \u201cWe\u2019ll split the check down the middle!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bye. Not interested. I\u2019m an American, thanks.<\/p>\n<p>Get whatever you want. I\u2019ll get what I want. No, you won\u2019t \u201cjust order for the \u2063table.\u201d\u2062 No, I don\u2019t \u201cjust wanna split it.\u201d I\u2019m not even that hungry. \u200cWhy would I volunteer to subsidize your meal? Worse, why would you assume that I should?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you like sampling different things. That\u2019s okay. But what I want on the menu is\u200d a \u2064commitment. Don\u2019t make your lack thereof my problem.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll \u2063just take the check. Separate.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How can forcing someone \u200bto share infringe \u200don their dietary restrictions or preferences<\/h2>\n<p><span>  \u200b Want to share\u201d is also rude in its own way.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing\u2063 food \u200dcan be a \u2063way to bond and create \u200da sense of community. I understand\u2063 that. But it shouldn\u2019t be forced upon us like some sort \u200bof social obligation. What happened \u2064to individual\u200b choice and personal preference?<\/p>\n<p>When did the act of dining out\u2064 become an exercise\u200d in compromise? I should be able \u200dto order what I\u2064 want, enjoy my meal in peace, \u2063and \u2063not have to worry about sharing or splitting\u200d the bill. It\u2019s simple really.<\/p>\n<p>And let\u2019s\u2063 not forget the \u200clogistical nightmare\u200c that \u2062often accompanies \u200csharing. Who gets the last \u200bpiece of the appetizer? How do we evenly split the bill when someone\u200d orders\u200b an expensive dish and someone else sticks to the basics? These questions only lead\u2064 to awkwardness \u2064and tension.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, forcing someone to share can \u200dinfringe on \u2062their dietary restrictions\u200d or \u2064preferences. What\u2063 if I\u2019m a vegetarian \u200cand my friend orders a\u2062 dish that\u2019s full of meat? Am I just supposed to sit \u2062there\u2063 and\u2062 pick \u200cat a salad while they indulge?<\/p>\n<p>While some may argue that sharing allows us to try a variety of dishes, I argue that \u200bit limits our ability to fully \u2062enjoy our own meal. \u2064I don\u2019t want to have to \u200cworry about \u200dothers\u2062 taking the last bite of my favorite \u2063dish or\u200d feeling guilty for wanting to keep it all to myself.<\/p>\n<p>So, the next \u200ctime you invite me to dine out, please respect my desire to have my own meal and pay for it myself. Don\u2019t assume\u200d that agreeing to eat\u2064 together means\u2064 agreeing to share. Let\u2019s make dining out about the food, \u2062the company, and the freedom to choose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>that I am willing to join them for a meal.
