Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) visits the city \u200coften when in the state \u200bthat he\u2019s represented in the U.S. Senate for a dozen years.<\/p>\n<p>Charleston is familiar, friendly turf. Raised in \u200dthe Alleghenies near Pennsylvania, Mr. \u200bManchin is a well-known face in the state&#8217;s capital, where he worked and lived \u2063as a state lawmaker,\u2063 secretary of state, and governor for more than \u200dthree decades.<\/p>\n<p>During an Oct. 11\u201313 \u200cswing through Charleston, he was celebrated at an Amtrak station renovated with grants he secured;\u200c at a metal-stamping plant founded with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-new-trade-pact-in-the-indo-pacific-has-officially-launched\/\" title=\"A New Trade Pact in the Indo-Pacific Has Officially Launched\">economic development initiatives<\/a>\u2063 he enacted as\u200b governor; and at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/manchin-in-the-middle-a-senator-at-a-crossroads\/\" title=\"Manchin: A Senator at a Crossroads\">annual \u2063veterans motorcycle fundraiser ride<\/a> that he\u2019s headlined for years.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Manchin\u2019s local legacies are \u2064built\u200d into bolts and\u200d bricks, solid as steel, and part of \u200dthe physical landscape. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Sherrod \u2062Brown (D-Ohio), as \u201cmost \u2063flippable\u201d in its 2024 drive to reclaim the majority in \u2062a chamber now\u2063 led 51\u201349 by Democrats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode mx-auto max-w-[1100px]\">\n<div class=\"mb-6 flex flex-col gap-4 float-none mx-auto w-[200px] md:float-right md:ml-6\">\n<div class=\"flex gap-3 flex-col sm:block\">\n<div class=\"flex-1\">\n<div class=\"relative\" style=\"padding-bottom:130.5%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Before 2000, all three West Virginia congressional representatives were Democrats. Since then, the state\u2019s House delegation \u2063has been\u2063 all GOP. Republicans have controlled both state \u2063legislative chambers since 2015, and expanded that \u2062to a trifecta \u200csince 2018.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginians have voted Republican in the\u2063 last six presidential elections, including nearly 70 percent\u2063 for President Trump in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He is \u200dthe only West Virginia Democrat elected to represent the \u200bstate.<\/p>\n<p>While Mr. Manchin\u2062 has voted \u2062with Republicans against raising the\u2064 corporate tax, trimming\u2062 COVID-related unemployment benefits, derailing Democrats\u2019 election-reform bill, and refusing to modify filibuster rules, \u2062he\u2019s also committed \u200bthe unpardonable\u2014he voted twice to impeach \u2062President\u200d Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, there\u2019s no shortage of Republicans ready to seize Mr. Manchin\u2019s Senate seat in\u2063 a state that all election rating services shade as red, redder, reddest; a state where President \u2063Trump is the most popular president since FDR; \u2064a state where a \u2062\u201cnot-a-Washington-Democrat\u201d moderate is a gray \u2064whale in a \u2063sea of hungry black-and-white orcas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\">\n<div class=\"mb-4 flex flex-col gap-4\">\n<div class=\"flex gap-3\">\n<div class=\"flex-1\">\n<div class=\"relative\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.69%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-comp-caption text-[14px] leading-[18px]\">Sen. Jim \u2063Justice and Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.).<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Manchin recruited\u200b Mr. \u200bJustice to run \u2062for\u2064 governor in \u200c2015 as a Democrat. During an August 2017 rally, Mr. Justice joined then-President Trump to announce he was a Republican. Now, he\u2019s running for Mr. Manchin\u2019s Senate seat.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 18, Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Justice in the Republican primary\u2014aside from\u200c Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake, his only 2024 Senate nod \u200bthus far\u2014over Mr. Mooney, who he backed\u200b in his 2022 congressional\u2063 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat primary, meanwhile, has no takers. Mr. Manchin hasn&#8217;t said if he\u2019ll seek\u2063 a fourth term in the Senate, nor if he\u2019ll\u200b do so as\u200b a Democrat or as \u2062an independent. The filing deadline is in January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Mr. Manchin has mentioned retirement\u2014he\u2019s been at this since the Reagan days\u2014pondered \u200bbecoming a Republican, and has often expressed disenchantment with both parties and the\u2062 two-party system.<\/p>\n<p>Since August, he&#8217;s openly teased running as an \u200dindependent in the\u2062 next phase of his political\u200b career, but hasn&#8217;t revealed any more than that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>He&#8217;s hinted at running for president in 2024\u200c as an independent, joining Robert F.\u2064 Kennedy Jr. as a second presidential\u2062 hopeful to take on the \u200dtwo dominant party candidates.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/10\/24\/id5516047-4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr. Manchin has appeared in New Hampshire with\u2064 No\u200c Labels, which is backing a 2024 independent presidential candidate. During the late-September Texas Tribune Festival in\u2064 Austin, he said \u2062an independent presidential ticket could animate \u2063a nation paralyzed in hyperpartisan fiddle-fests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are having a hard time. (Charlotte Cuthbertson\/The Epoch Times)<\/div>\n<div class=\"bg-comp-divider h-px\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr. Manchin\u2019s\u200b campaign committee reported that he&#8217;s sitting\u2062 on $10.8 million in cash-on-hand as of Oct. 1, making him well-positioned\u2064 for a 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>While Mr. Justice\u2019s campaign reported only $800,000 in its Oct. 1\u200c bank, he&#8217;s the state\u2019s wealthiest \u200bman\u2014he once owned 130 businesses\u2014with a significant capacity to self-finance.<\/p>\n<p>He lives at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, \u201cAmerica&#8217;s Resort Since\u2064 1778,\u201d an 11,000-acre, \u200c710-room resort he owns that includes dozens of restaurants, lounges, and retail shops, drawing \u201cLittle Trump\u201d comparisons.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode mx-auto max-w-[1100px]\">\n<div class=\"mb-6 flex flex-col gap-4 float-none mx-auto w-[200px] md:float-right md:ml-6\">\n<div class=\"flex gap-3 flex-col sm:block\">\n<div class=\"flex-1\">\n<div class=\"relative\" style=\"padding-bottom:141%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even before Mr.\u2063 Trump&#8217;s endorsement, regardless if Mr. Manchin declares a run for reelection,\u200d Mr. Justice is the odds-on front-runner to\u200b be West\u200d Virginia\u2019s next senator.<\/p>\n<p>In an Oct. 1\u20134 Emerson College survey of 539 voters, Mr. \u200cJustice garnered 41 percent of the tally. Mr. Manchin finished third with \u2063just 28 \u2062percent. Undecided, or someone else,\u2064 notched 31 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The good news for Mr. Manchin is this poll and others nationwide confirm there \u200bare voters out there\u2014maybe a third, maybe \u200bmore, \u200cof the electorate\u2014open to independent candidates or \u201cbipartisan\u2062 tickets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bad news for Mr. Manchin is, in \u200dWest Virginia anyway, a ticket with his name on it won\u2019t sell. (AP Photo\/Leah Willingham)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Outside \u200dSouth Charleston&#8217;s\u200d Gestamp metal-stamping plant, a $120 million, 350-employee factory rooted in tax credits and workforce development initiatives established while he was governor, Mr. Manchin assured reporters on Oct. 11 that he was getting closer to making a 2024 decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m \u2064having a hard\u2063 time\u2014I really\u2063 am,\u201d \u2063he said when \u2063asked if he would run for something in 2024 and what something he would be. Democrat? Independent? Republican?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe no party, maybe all of the above, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t worry about the\u200b \u2018D\u2019 or the \u2018R,\u2019 worry about the person. Who is that\u200d person? There can\u200b be a good \u2018D\u2019 and a bad \u2018D,\u2019 and a good \u2018R\u2019 and \u2062a bad \u2018R,\u2019\u2063 but the identity? I like more the\u2062 independent identity,\u201d Mr. Manchin said. \u201cThe two-party system, \u200cunless it changes, will be the downfall of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How has the shifting dynamics in \u200bWest Virginia\u200c impacted Mr. Manchin&#8217;s \u200cstanding and political future?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  An \u200dcriticism and opposition to his position within his own\u200d party.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Challenging Political Landscape<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Manchin&#8217;s \u2064centrist approach \u2064and willingness \u200bto work\u200b across party lines made him a formidable figure\u200d in\u2062 the political arena.\u200d However, \u200bthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/actress-sarah-paulson-talks-finding-the-humanity-in-clinton-whistleblower-linda-tripp\/\" title=\"Actress Sarah Paulson Talks \u2018Finding The Humanity\u2019 In Clinton Whistleblower Linda Tripp\">current political landscape<\/a> has undergone significant changes, leaving him in a precarious\u2063 position. \u200dThe intense polarization and ideological divisions have\u2063 made it\u200b increasingly difficult\u2062 for centrist politicians like Mr. Manchin to navigate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In his home state of West \u200cVirginia, even his standing is \u2062starting to waver. Once a \u2062well-known and\u200c respected figure, \u200dMr. Manchin&#8217;s position as the Senate&#8217;s most &#8220;conservative&#8221; Democrat is \u200dnow viewed with skepticism.
