Planning to lead a church tour, arriving a day or two early to be ready for it, they spent the rest of that Saturday sorting things out and finally canceling \u2064the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Looking to their safety, they called the \u200cU.S. Embassy for guidance. They were appalled, they said, that when they asked for shelter, embassy personnel denied it. You run to the embassy, they open the doors,\u2062 and you&#8217;re \u2063safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>State Department&#8217;s Lack of\u200d Assistance<\/h2>\n<p>The State Department did not respond to a \u200brequest for comment from The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>The Lawrences\u2062 said they spoke with U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.), \u2064who represents their \u2064Roanoke district, and told them he had heard of other such complaints. Mr. Griffith responded to The Epoch Times in \u200dan email:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am \u200bso thankful \u2063Bishop\u200d Lawrence and his \u2062wife were able to safely get out of Israel. Their flight didn&#8217;t have wifi, Bishop Lawrence said, so they were out of touch and\u200d unaware of the situation. Their \u200bflight did have wifi, \u2063and they had been sitting next to an Israeli with intelligence ties who&#8217;d spent the whole flight clicking around on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As they\u2062 got ready to land, he \u200dtold Keith, &#8216;You&#8217;re going to be landing in a war zone. Israel\u2062 is at war.&#8217; &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The airport itself seemed calm when\u200c they entered. Customs \u200cwas almost vacant,\u2062 Bishop\u200d Lawrence said, which he found strange\u2062 as he was familiar with Israel&#8217;s strict security there and elsewhere. Israelis\u2062 are used\u200d to skirmishes and fighting with Hamas\u2062 and Hezbollah. Most people didn&#8217;t seem worried,&#8221; Bishop Lawrence said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the day went on, people \u2063were \u2064getting more and more frightened. They were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/too-da-loo-fredo-chris-cuomo-and-cnn-slammed-after-network-fires-host-following-scandal\/\" title=\"\u2018Too-da-loo, Fredo\u2019: Chris Cuomo And CNN Slammed After Network Fires Host Following Scandal\">hearing stories<\/a> about loved ones. Israel\u200c is so small, it&#8217;s \u2064like a small town. Everyone \u2062knows \u2063your business. Everyone knows someone who was killed \u2062or\u200d kidnapped,&#8221;\u200d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I \u200bsaw a deep sadness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He initially told his group, most of whom were \u200dpreparing to leave, that the tour \u200bwould go ahead. On Saturday \u2063afternoon, they considered \u200daltering the tour\u200b to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stranded-americans-say-us-embassy-did-not-help-them-in-israel-when-war-started\/\" title=\"Stranded Americans claim US Embassy offered no aid during Israel's outbreak of war.\">accommodate late-arriving group members<\/a>, condensing it, or delaying its start, but many airlines began canceling \u2062flights. By dinner time,\u200c it\u2062 was clear that the tour \u2064would have to be canceled.<\/p>\n<p>They went \u200dto dinner, served buffet style at their beachfront hotel in Netanya, north of Tel Aviv, with many \u200dlarge Orthodox families in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>As they were finishing \u200dup around 7:30 p.m., he said, &#8220;Two \u2064bombs exploded\u200d directly overhead. It shook the windows and the building. It felt like a\u2064 small earthquake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all ran down\u200b the stairwells to the safe room\u2064 in the basement. \u200dThere was pandemonium. There was screaming. A small group of about a dozen men were conducting \u2064a religious service, one marking the beginning of the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah. It \u2064celebrates the completion of the annual\u200d cycle of Torah reading \u2062and the start of the next one.<\/p>\n<p>The men ignored the noise and confusion and continued \u200btheir service, Bishop Lawrence said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The men just\u2063 kept\u200c doing their thing, like nothing\u200c was happening. (Courtesy of Keith Martin.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The crowd finally calmed down, and after an hour, the hotel told them they could return to their rooms.\u200b The Lawrences did so \u2064and texted their\u200b group to cancel the trip.<\/p>\n<p>It was a sleepless night, he said. Mr. Martin advised them\u200b to put their bed&#8217;s headboard against the window to block any shrapnel from coming \u200bthrough, but their bed wasn&#8217;t moveable, Bishop Lawrence said. They moved some other furniture and the drapes to compensate. &#8220;It probably didn&#8217;t do much, but it made us feel better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They heard \u200cbombing intermittently. (Courtesy of Bishop Quigg Lawrence.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr. Martin contacted him\u200d at around 5\u200d a.m. Sunday, saying he&#8217;d been trying to\u200d book flights out. Mr. Martin had clicked on a link he thought took him to\u2062 United, Bishop Lawrence said, but perhaps\u200d through lack\u200c of sleep, he ended up talking to a fly-by-night travel agency.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next few \u2064hours, the agent assembled \u2062a complex\u2062 itinerary\u2014four legs beginning with an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Addis Ababa, connecting to Dublin, Chicago, and \u200bthen \u200bRoanoke. Starting \u2063Monday, Oct. 9, the trip would take them 46 hours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The guy was an angel and a devil in the\u2062 same package,&#8221; Bishop Lawrence said.<\/p>\n<p>The tickets were $1,336 for \u200deach of the four of them, money that it took seven credit cards between\u200d them to pay,\u200c as the agent padded\u200c the whole\u2062 thing with an additional\u200b $12,000 charge. The two\u200c couples were charged\u200d more than $17,000. (Courtesy of Bishop Quigg Lawrence.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That morning, they called the embassy. &#8220;They said &#8216;fill out this form&#8217;. I said, &#8216;Come\u2063 on, man. It&#8217;s a war zone. Fill a form out?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They \u200casked if\u200b they could come to the embassy,\u2062 he said. They were refused, and the staff member wouldn&#8217;t even tell them where the embassy was located.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Lawrence was\u2062 unimpressed. &#8220;Why pay\u200b for an embassy when they won&#8217;t respond to the needs of their citizens?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The day passed \u200buneventfully. He and his wife left the hotel for\u200d lunch and found a cafe where \u2062Israelis were eating. &#8220;No one seemed \u2063uptight.&#8221; But Bishop Lawrence suspected what lay\u200c beneath\u2062 the calm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a former paramedic,&#8221; he said. &#8220;In stressful situations, some people panic and scream.\u2064 Others get stoic, like the shock of everything, the brain is trying to figure out how to assimilate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They saw few people in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>They ate dinner \u2063in the hotel dining room. (Courtesy of Bishop Quiqq Lawrence.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That night, they continued hearing jets and helicopters, but the only sounds of \u2062bombing were far away.\u200c They packed a\u2063 go bag in case of emergency\u2063 during the night\u200c and otherwise \u200cmade ready for a pre-dawn departure \u2064from the hotel to go to the airport.<\/p>\n<p>They had various ups \u2062and downs making their flight. They \u2063got in someone else&#8217;s Uber by mistake and were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alabama-gov-kay-ivey-signs-daylight-saving-time-bill\/\" title=\"Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey Signs Daylight Saving Time Bill\">running late<\/a>\u2062 but got to the airport in time because of the driver&#8217;s heroic speeding. At \u200bthe airport, they found enormous security lines.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop \u200bLawrence, who had heart surgery earlier this\u2062 year and regularly monitors his heart rate, saw his heart racing. Meanwhile, he worried he could neither endure the \u2062long \u2063line nor get \u2063through the airport. His wife suggested he use\u200c a wheelchair, \u200cand they found one unlocked near a long line of locked ones.<\/p>\n<p>He was challenged \u2062by an \u2062airport employee but convinced her\u200d he was a heart patient. She relented and said they&#8217;d take\u200c him to the gate, but his wife\u200c and friends would have to go through \u200dthe regular line.\u2063 The other three met up with him around an hour later but told him they had been pushed through \u2063the security line a little faster to reunite with\u200b him.<\/p>\n<p>Their expensive flights home were long but\u2062 uneventful, including two lengthy layovers.<\/p>\n<p>He remains dismayed over their treatment by their own\u2064 government. The confusion he found, he said, reminded him more of &#8220;Benghazi or the fall of\u2063 Saigon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They \u2063would keep getting emails days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/san-mateo-county-california-to-pay-to-encourage-even-more-homelessness\/\" title=\"San Mateo County, California to Pay to Encourage Even More Homelessness\">arriving home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some told them\u2064 to shelter in place and not to come to the embassy.<\/p>\n<p>One said they&#8217;d\u200c get flights but would have to sign a promissory \u2062note for the charges and couldn&#8217;t \u200bpick where to fly. They&#8217;d\u200d be limited to one suitcase. A couple of\u200c days later, they got an email advising them that now they&#8217;d\u2064 been taken out on a ship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wrote off the embassy,&#8221; Bishop Lawrence said. &#8220;It was\u2063 apparent\u200d to me, after the form emails,\u200c that they were not going to\u2063 do anything. Nada. Zip.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Lawrence noted that, in contrast, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis mobilized the state government to evacuate Floridians free of charge, more than 700 as\u2063 of this writing. &#8220;It&#8217;s no joke that DeSantis makes (President Joe) Biden look \u200cincompetent\u200d by comparison.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> \u200b What were the reasons that led the \u2064Lawrences to cancel their trip?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  The Lawrences made the difficult decision to cancel the trip entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned for their safety, \u200cthe \u2064Lawrences reached \u2062out \u2063to the U.S. Embassy for assistance and shelter. To their dismay, embassy personnel denied their request for shelter\u200c and did not offer any help in arranging their departure from the country. Bishop Lawrence expressed his disappointment, stating that he expected \u200dmore support from the embassy, especially considering his role as a pastor and bishop who had traveled extensively around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Upon finally managing to leave the country, the Lawrences found themselves on a plane with 55 Ethiopian immigrants to America. Bishop Lawrence commented on the irony of \u2064U.S. citizens receiving\u2062 little assistance from their own\u2063 government \u200bwhile \u200crefugees on\u2064 a paid flight were being brought in\u200c from \u200bEthiopia.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.\u2063 However, U.S. Representative Morgan Griffith, who represents the \u200dLawrences&#8217; district, said that he had heard of similar complaints regarding the lack of assistance from the \u2062State Department. He expressed \u2062relief\u2064 that the Lawrences were able to safely leave Israel but acknowledged that \u200bthere were ongoing issues with the State Department&#8217;s responsiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to their departure, the Lawrences were preparing to lead a tour of more than 30 people from various\u200b countries and states.
