In February 2023, the council unanimously\u200d passed a new ordinance, known as Ordinance 609, which severely limits the types of murals allowed.<\/p>\n<p>The ordinance \u2064prohibits murals on commercial building fronts, those used\u200d as advertisements, and \u2062any containing &#8220;commercial messaging.&#8221; It also requires artists to register each\u200b new mural with the \u2062city and pay a $500 fee. The city must approve the\u2064 mural before \u2063work can begin.<\/p>\n<p>Most notably, the law explicitly targets the type of murals created by Tilt Vision, which often feature businesses&#8217; names and products. Violating the ordinance is a misdemeanor, subject to\u2064 a daily\u200d fine of \u2063$2,000.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the new law, Finishes Solutions suspended its contract with Tilt Vision indefinitely. The\u200b art company has since struggled to secure new contracts in \u200cthe city, \u200bfacing \u2063significant\u2064 financial\u2062 setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Smith and Ray expressed their disappointment and frustration. They assured city officials that their work aimed to bring communities together and promote economic development through art.
