Before that, Steve Scalise withdrew from the race, realizing\u200d he lacked sufficient support. <\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Moving \u200dToward Unity<\/h2>\n<p>The morning began with hopes of unity as Republican members expressed\u2064 their desire to unite behind one of the seven \u2064candidates in the nominating contest.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Following Rep. Jordan&#8217;s withdrawal, nine candidates announced their bids for speakership, with seven remaining in the race during the nominating conference.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The candidates included Tom \u2064Emmer,\u2062 the most senior contender, along with \u200dMike Johnson, \u200cByron Donalds, Kevin Hern, Jack Bergman, Austin Scott, and Pete Sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Meuser \u2062and \u2064Gary Palmer withdrew \u200dtheir candidacies before the nominating vote.<\/p>\n<p>During the candidate forum held the evening before voting, the atmosphere was more subdued compared to previous\u200d meetings.\u2064 After weeks of drama surrounding the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy\u2062 and the\u200d failed nominations of two others,\u2062 emotions seemed to have cooled.<\/p>\n<p>Although no \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nearly-half-of-voters-prefer-any-republican-to-biden-poll\/\" title=\"Poll: Almost 50% of Voters Favor Republicans over Biden\">clear frontrunner emerged<\/a> from the \u2064forum, \u200bmembers anticipated the race would narrow down in the next\u2062 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to wait to have the \u2062really substantive [conversations] either overnight tonight or\u200b tomorrow morning,&#8221; said Rep. Nick Lalota, \u200cwho voted\u200c against Mr. Jordan. &#8220;We&#8217;ll start to focus on the final one or two candidates and where there was synergy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a lot of candidates who represent a good range of our conference and laid out good cases for what they want to do,&#8221; said Mr. Scalise. &#8220;And \u2063I \u200cthink everybody&#8217;s talking about the same things. It&#8217;s about unifying our\u200c conference.\u2063 Getting us back on track.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s \u2064going be a spirited\u200d vote today. I think the members are committed to making sure we elect the speaker, and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re going to get done,&#8221; said Mr. Donalds. &#8220;Whoever our nominee\u2064 is will have my support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr. Johnson expressed \u200boptimism about finding agreement, stating, &#8220;There was a good esprit de corps in the room last night, and I think there&#8217;s\u2062 a commitment \u2063to get it done quickly.&#8221; He added that all candidates had committed to supporting\u2063 the eventual designee.<\/p>\n<h2>The Nominating Ballots<\/h2>\n<p>Prior\u200d to voting, each candidate&#8217;s name was nominated by a member\u2063 of their\u2062 choice. Due to the\u200b number of\u200d candidates, only one nominating speech was allowed,\u2062 unlike the typical three in conference votes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After each round of voting, the candidate with the lowest vote total was eliminated. A simple majority was required for election, and the initial votes were cast by secret ballot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Rep. (Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Emmer led after the first ballot \u200cwith 78 votes,\u2062 followed by Johnson with \u206434 votes. Donalds came \u200din third with 29 votes, and Hern received 27 \u2062votes. Sessions was eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>However, concerns were raised about Emmer&#8217;s voting record, particularly regarding his support for the Respect for Marriage Act, which codified federal protections for same-sex\u2064 couples. Rep. Rick Allen stated that he would\u2062 not vote for Emmer due to their difference of opinion on marriage.<\/p>\n<p>On the second ballot, Emmer received 90 votes, Johnson received 37, Donalds garnered 33,\u2062 and Hern received 31. Bergman was eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>Emmer&#8217;s support increased to 100 votes on the\u2062 third ballot. Johnson, Donalds, and Hern, who were considered more conservative candidates,\u2063 received 43, \u206332, and 26 votes respectively. Scott was eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>During the fourth ballot, Emmer received 107 votes, Johnson received 56, and Donalds and Hern each received 25 votes. Hern was eliminated, and\u200b Donalds\u200d withdrew from the race. Four members voted for \u2064other candidates, and two\u200b voted &#8220;present.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emmer and Johnson \u200bproceeded to a fifth ballot, where Emmer secured the \u2062nomination. However, he immediately requested a confirming vote by roll call to\u2062 gauge his chances of reaching the required 217 Republican votes in the House election. Unfortunately, \u200c26 holdouts indicated they would not switch their votes\u200d to Emmer, and with the narrow Republican majority, he \u200ccould\u200d only afford to lose four Republican votes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Rep. Brandon Williams compared the \u2062situation to\u200c Groundhog Day, expressing his disappointment as a newcomer to politics. &#8220;I came here because I love this country, and, frankly, as a patriot, it&#8217;s really disheartening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>30-Day Agenda<\/h2>\n<p>Once the House resumes business\u200b after three weeks of inactivity, \u200bthe new speaker will face a range \u2062of legislative issues that need immediate attention.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first item on the agenda is likely to be the passage of a resolution supporting Israel&#8217;s right to self-defense, a symbolic measure with 425 co-sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the House will consider President \u2062Joe Biden&#8217;s request for $105\u2064 billion in emergency aid to Ukraine, \u200dIsrael, allies in the Indo-Pacific, and border security. While Republicans are supportive \u200cof Israel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-ted-cruz-warns-us-at-risk-of-serious-terrorist-attack\/\" title=\"Sen. Ted Cruz cautions US vulnerable to major terrorist threat.\">strengthening\u200d border security<\/a>, there are concerns\u2062 about the bundled request for Ukraine aid, with some members\u2063 advocating for \u2064individual consideration\u2063 of each request.<\/p>\n<p>The appropriations process must be resolved by November 17th. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy narrowly \u200cavoided a government shutdown by passing a 45-day continuing spending resolution (CR) on September 30th. Given the delay in concluding the appropriations process, some members believe a second CR is inevitable, while others demand \u2064the passage of the remaining \u200beight appropriations bills and their reconciliation with the Senate before the current\u200d CR expires.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The \u2064House is also expected \u2064to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tom-emmer-becomes-gops-3rd-speaker-pick-but-path-to-gavel-unclear\/\" title=\"Tom Emmer chosen as GOP's 3rd Speaker, but path to gavel uncertain.\">discuss\u200b imposing additional sanctions<\/a> on Iranian oil sales to reduce\u2064 their ability to fund\u2063 terrorist \u200bactivities.<\/p>\n<h2>Unfinished Business<\/h2>\n<p>There is lingering tension within the Republican conference regarding the\u200c events of the past three weeks, including the removal of former Speaker Kevin\u200b McCarthy.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>McCarthy described \u2063the preceding weeks as &#8220;a total \u200cembarrassment&#8221; that had demoralized Republican members. However, his victory was not without controversy. Several holdout\u200c Republicans expressed concerns about Emmer&#8217;s ability to win the necessary votes on the House floor. Some \u200bargued that Emmer&#8217;s moderate positions on certain issues\u200c could \u2063alienate more conservative members of the party, making it\u200c difficult for him to gather the\u200c support needed for election.<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen whether Emmer can overcome these concerns and unite the Republican caucus behind him.
