Democrats Take Action \u2062to Address Rising Crime<\/h2>\n<p>After years \u2064of\u2062 increasing crime rates, Washington, D.C. Democrats have finally realized\u2062 that being lenient on criminals in the name of &#8220;social justice&#8221; is not effective. <\/p>\n<p>Mayor Muriel Bowser, \u200ca Democrat, has introduced legislation to reverse several &#8220;police reform&#8221; measures that were \u2063implemented in response to the\u200c death of George Floyd in May 2020. The Addressing \u200dCrime Trends (ACT) Now Act aims to roll back restrictions on the use of force, vehicular pursuits, \u200band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/after-years-of-high-crime-and-homicides-d-c-democrats-finally-discover-the-police-arent-the-problem\/\" title=\"After Years Of High Crime And Homicides, D.C. Democrats Finally Discover The Police Aren\u2019t The Problem\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/must-be-dismantled-ben-jerrys-attacks-americas-police-system\/\" title=\"\u2018Must Be Dismantled\u2019: Ben &#038; Jerry\u2019s Attacks America\u2019s Police System\">body-worn camera footage<\/a> requirements<\/a>. It also\u2064 includes new\u200b measures to crack down on crime, such as stricter penalties for\u2062 organized retail theft, the\u2062 establishment\u2064 of &#8220;drug-free zones&#8221; by\u200c the police chief, and the re-criminalization of wearing masks while committing a crime.<\/p>\n<p>Bowser&#8217;s push for increased policing is a response to\u200b the alarming rise in homicides and \u2064other crimes in \u200cthe nation&#8217;s capital. Last month, The Washington Post reported that D.C. had already recorded its 200th homicide of the year, marking the first time this milestone was reached before October since 1997. The number of \u200dhomicides had been\u200b decreasing from 2004 to 2020 but spiked again \u200din 2021 with 226 killings. Notably, D.C. had \u200da higher violent\u2062 crime rate than any state \u2063in the\u200d country last\u200c year.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cintroduction of the ACT Now \u200cAct is an implicit admission by Bowser and D.C. Democrats that \u200dthe &#8220;police reforms&#8221; passed during the &#8220;summer of\u2063 rage&#8221; in 2020 have done more\u2062 harm than good. These \u2063reforms, which banned neck restraints, limited\u200d the \u200cuse\u2062 of tear gas, and required the public release of body-worn camera footage, were initially approved as emergency measures and later enshrined into law. The law also created a database of police disciplinary files and excluded discipline from the police union&#8217;s collective bargaining process, making it easier to fire officers for alleged wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>According to DCist, the provision excluding discipline from collective bargaining makes it &#8220;easier for officers to be \u200cfired&#8221; for alleged misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>When the legislation was passed last year, Councilman Robert White claimed it would not compromise public safety but actually make\u200b the city safer. However, Gregg Pemberton, the chair of D.C.&#8217;s\u200c police union, criticized the measure and expressed concern about the\u200b increasing homicide numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Pemberton has testified on Capitol Hill multiple times, highlighting \u200dhow these reforms have hindered \u2062the\u200b effectiveness of the D.C. police department&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>The district&#8217;s legal \u200csystem has also contributed to the challenges faced \u200dby officers by declining to prosecute \u200bmany offenders. In 2022, the D.C. U.S. attorney&#8217;s office, appointed by President Biden, declined to prosecute 67 percent of cases that would have \u200cgone to trial in D.C. Superior Court.
