Then again, \u201cPalestinian Authority\u201d gets 17 percent \u200dsupport, and Hamas has a 14 percent positive rating \u2014 which is to say, 14 percent of your neighbors have taken the side of a medieval religious cult that\u2019s vicious \u2063enough to cut<\/a> Jewish babies out of mothers before beheading\u2064 them. If 14 percent of Americans supported ISIS or al\u200c Qaeda or the Nazi Party, we would probably be concerned.<\/p>\n

Anyway, those numbers seem far too small to me. I think there\u2019s a good reason why. For one thing, many of those\u200d who claim to be \u201csupporters\u201d of the Jewish State \u2062are not. The Barack Obama types, who do the perfunctory throat-clearing about \u200cIsrael\u2019s right to exist before going into the usual reasons it should not. This faction \u2014 let\u2019s be generous and call them \u201cboth-siders\u201d \u2014 is a growing concern in the Democratic Party and on the fringes of the right.<\/p>\n

According to the Harvard\u2063 poll crosstabs<\/a>, 36 percent of \u201cliberals\u201d of all ages agreed that the Hamas attack on civilians was justified. 15 \u200dpercent of \u201cconservatives.\u201d While\u2063 antisemitism isn\u2019t the exclusive domain of \u200dleft or right, full-blown Hamas apologists are now deeply embedded in left-wing institutions<\/a> \u200bsuch as universities, major newspapers, cable news, progressive politics, think tanks, and the \u2062State Department. Also according to the Harvard<\/a> poll, a majority of 18- to 24-year-olds believe the killing of more than 1,200\u2063 Israeli and American\u2063 civilians was justified. Nearly half of those 25 to 35 believe it was justified. \u2063That percentage might be \u200ba bit lower than what you find in\u200c The New York Times newsroom; nevertheless, it is only going to\u200c get worse.<\/p>\n

How many\u2064 young people working as engineers or carpenters or \u200bstarting a \u200bnew business or \u2063at home tending to a new family support Hamas? Very few, one imagines. What about the lit majors or those pursuing international \u2063relations degrees or Ph.D.s in one of \u2064the social pseudosciences? There is little hope for those who attend hermetically \u2064sealed ideological\u2063 laboratories<\/a> of higher \u201clearning,\u201d where identitarianism, intersectionality, and other iterations of Marxism \u2014 most \u200ccontingent on some form of antisemitism \u2014 \u200dare taught.<\/p>\n

These\u2063 institutions are run by cowardly administrators who \u200conly stand up for free speech when defending \u200cterror apologists. They will \u200ccontinue to create credentialed nitwits. These are not often places for young people to learn critical thinking skills<\/a>. But they are \u200dplaces that produce ideologues who\u2019ll be getting those editorial jobs and professorships and \u200dteachers union presidencies and law clerkships and security clearance jobs at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n

Who else makes up \u200bthis minority? We\u2019re not supposed to talk \u200babout it, but it\u2019s clear. According to a Cygnal poll (the \u200doutfit gets an \u201cA\u201d rating<\/a> from FiveThirtyEight), a majority of American Muslims agree<\/a> that Hamas was \u201cjustified\u201d in its attack on Israel as well. <\/p>\n

Though it is indisputable that antisemitism is deeply ingrained in \u200dcertain Muslim communities, to say so will\u2062 likely get you smeared \u200das \u201cIslamophobic\u201d \u2014 always<\/a> a big<\/em> topic of conversation in Washington\u200b when Jews are being murdered. <\/p>\n
