securing 36.7\u200c percent of the popular vote, while Mr. Milei came \u2062in at 30 percent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Suspended in the balance is \u2063the country&#8217;s dire economic crisis. \u2063National inflation is currently hovering near 140 <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/argentina\/inflation-cpi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">percent<\/a> as \u2064the August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/outsider-candidates-dominate-latin-americas-2023-presidential-elections-5481950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary<\/a>, many Argentinians expected Mr. Milei to secure a landslide victory in the first round over the\u200c weekend.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>A political underdog \u200band head of the\u200b party Freedom Advances, Mr. Milei captured global headlines \u200bdue to the radical changes he \u200daims to implement to save Argentina&#8217;s flatlined\u2064 economy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n    <!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>    <!--\/$-->\n  <\/div>\n<p>Eliminating the nation&#8217;s \u200ccentral bank, cutting unnecessary government spending, and dumping\u2062 the peso in favor of the U.S.\u200c dollar \u2063are some of the debated actions he&#8217;s promised.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u2064wake of the runoff vote announcement, Mr. Milei told supporters during a speech \u2064delivered at Hotel Libertador that Argentina&#8217;s election is\u200b a decision between &#8220;<strong>freedom<\/strong>&#8221; and what he called &#8220;<strong>nefarious Kirchnerism<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former president and current Vice \u200cPresident Cristina\u2062 Kirchner\u2064 has been the Peronism party&#8217;s greatest champion\u2063 over the years, earning her as much hatred as loyalty among Argentinians.<\/p>\n<p>An ardent supporter of raising taxes on the working class and expanding welfare subsidies, many residents blame the hard-left politician for \u200blaying the cornerstones \u2063for the country&#8217;s current economic crisis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The vice president was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/pistol-wielding-gunman-attempts-to-assassinate-argentinas-vice-president-4705917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted<\/a> on corruption charges in 2022 and could receive up to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure (Natacha Pisarenko\/Pool\/AP Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Milei\u200b was unshaken by the runoff, expressing hope\u200d that Argentina would finally end\u2062 its long-suffering relationship with &#8220;<strong>Kirchnerism<\/strong>&#8221; and the Peronist regime.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Two years ago, if we had been\u2062 told that we would be competing with Kirchnerism for the presidency of\u2063 the nation, we would not\u200b have believed it. We are facing a historic event!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The right-wing \u200blibertarian \u2062added that facing \u2063off with a \u200dlegacy political party candidate is a &#8220;truly historic achievement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former Argentinian government official and analyst Fabian Calle told The Epoch Times that Sunday&#8217;s election was &#8220;the worst election for Peronism in\u2064 many years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>He said Argentinians have been steadily \u200dlosing faith in their government and are tired of constant scandals and broken promises with their elected officials. This was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argentina.gob.ar\/interior\/observatorioelectoral\/datos-electorales\/participacion-historica-en-elecciones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evident<\/a> \u2062in the historically low\u2063 voter turnout on Oct. 22.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Calle said it was the &#8220;lowest electoral participation\u200c since\u2062 1983.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A\u2064 vote for Massa is a vote for more of the same. A vote for Milei is taking\u200b a different gamble,&#8221; Alvaro Gomez told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gomez supports his fellow Argentinian Mr. Calle&#8217;s assertion that people are fed up with the \u200dcountry&#8217;s \u200bpolitics.<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, Mr. Massa represents a long string of economic \u2064failures \u200band a chain of broken promises at the hands \u200cof Peronism.<\/p>\n<p>On the other end,\u2064 Mr. Milei has proposed radical ideas and reforms some feel are \u2062too risky.<\/p>\n<p>Risk assessment is no small \u2063matter for a country \u200dteetering on\u200b the edge of\u200c total economic collapse. It&#8217;s the worst the region has endured since Nicolas Maduro&#8217;s 2013 rise to power in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m tired. Argentina is tired,&#8221; Mr. Gomez said with a sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Many locals \u2062didn&#8217;t wait for \u200bthe election results to cash in and\u200c secure their assets.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina witnessed the most significant discharge of stocks in more than two years \u200dahead \u200cof the election.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>An astonishing $6.6 million \u200cwas<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalxetfs.com\/funds\/argt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u2063pulled<\/a> from the Global X MSCI Argentina\u200b ETF in a single day.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>In the \u200bstreets, local reports noted many residents emptied their bank accounts while scrambling to find U.S. dollars in the currency black markets \u200cahead of the polls \u200bopening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobody wanted to wait [on the election results]. Everybody is just bracing for the \u2063worst,&#8221; Buenos Aires resident Lucilla Martinez told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Ripples within financial markets are \u2064an expected outcome\u200b of any\u2064 presidential election,\u200d but Argentina&#8217;s situation is unique.\u200b The severity of its economic crisis and a highly polarized\u2063 election prompted locals to prepare for an even worse economic \u2064spiral.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t care if they say he&#8217;s radical. I voted for Milei\u200d because \u2064I want\u2064 real change. People \u200chave said he [Milei] will be worse for our economy, \u2063but\u200b the people saying that are the ones who destroyed this country,&#8221; Ms. Martinez said.<\/p>\n<h2>Peronism Faces Uncertainty<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;For a Peronist in power, there&#8217;s nothing worse than another Peronist who\u200b has power,&#8221; \u200bMr. Calle\u200d said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many \u200dopposition \u2062members have \u2062said Mrs. Kirchner \u200bhas relied \u2064on like-minded members of the ruling coalition\u2014 particularly in Congress\u2014to push \u200cher\u200b private agenda over the years. Yet \u2062Mr. \u200dCalle \u2063says that may\u2063 end with\u200b Mr. Massa if \u2063he wins the runoff race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Massa is not Alberto Fernandez. He will try\u200c to establish political hegemony.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Argentina&#8217;s President Alberto Fernandez is pictured\u200c during a bilateral meeting with the German Chancellor on the sidelines of the G-7 summit at Elmau Castle, southern Germany,\u200d on June 27, 2022.\u200c (Markus Schreiber\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr.\u200b Calle\u2064 is not the\u2062 first to \u2062imply or\u200d directly\u200d state that outgoing\u200b President \u2063Fernandez is a political \u200bpuppet for Ms. Kirchner.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that if \u2062Mr. Massa is elected in the second round, there will be a point where the\u200b other Peronists will be forced to \u200cfall in line or become political rivals. This includes the &#8220;Kirchneristas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the Peronists win, surely nothing will change. Over 50 years of their leadership has told us this,&#8221; Mr. Gomez said.<\/p>\n<p>If \u2064he wins, Mr. Calle\u2064 said the \u200cPeronist candidate has a \u2062monumental task ahead and will &#8220;inherit \u200call\u2064 the imbalances and holes that a collapsed economy has.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And that economic hole\u2064 has only gotten deeper since the election. The nation&#8217;s U.S. dollar bonds, which traded\u200b at less than 30 cents on the dollar before the election, continued losing ground on Oct. 23 and are listed among the worst performers in emerging economies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;There is no easy road ahead,&#8221; Ms. Martinez said, pausing before\u2062 adding, &#8220;But how could anyone \u2064believe the same person\u2062 in charge of the economy during this \u200bcrisis will somehow make it better as \u200ba president?&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Past vs. Future<\/h2>\n<p>During an August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z37JQNrthbQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with Bloomberg News, Mr. Milei stressed that his top priority was \u2062to align Argentina with the United States and the rest of the Western world in terms of policies and values.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But \u200cwhen \u200dit came to relations with \u2063China, Mr.\u2062 Milei was blunt. &#8220;We do not make a pact \u2063with communists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, the libertarian dark horse candidate will face off against the pro-China Peronist regime&#8217;s candidate in the November final round while the future of relations with Argentina&#8217;s \u2062top trade and investment partners\u2014the United States and China\u2014are in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Milei has made it clear on more than one occasion that he opposes anti-Western sentiment at\u200b every level. However, Mr. Massa is expected to move forward with similar foreign policies, prioritizing Beijing over the United States and deepening\u2062 cooperation\u2062 with the anti-Western trade bloc BRICS.<\/p>\n<p>Yet some analysts believe even \u2063if the Peronists emerge as \u200bthe victor in November, it won&#8217;t be business as usual.<\/p>\n<p>Evan Ellis, a Latin America\u200d analyst and professor \u2062at the \u200dU.S. Army War College, told The\u2062 Epoch Times that Argentina&#8217;s election is &#8220;full of ironies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He \u2062said the Peronists are capitalizing on the fear Mr. Milei&#8217;s wild card economic \u2062policies have created, but Mr. Massa \u2063will likely\u2062 have to take a \u2062different approach even if he wins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You could see a little more pro-West, \u2064a little \u200dless Putin embracing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, he says Argentinians will ultimately have to decide what they fear more: a known past with Mr. Massa or an unknown future \u200bwith Mr. Milei.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In an ironic sort of way, it\u2019ll \u200dbe a choice between fears of the future and the \u200bfears of the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Argentina&#8217;s Oct. 22 presidential election left the world in suspense.
