And every day goes\u2062 by,\u2064 we\u2019re essentially\u2063 shut\u2064 down as a government,\u201d Foreign Relations Committee\u200c Chairman Michael McCaul\u200c (R-Texas) said on the ABC News \u200cprogram \u201cThis Week\u201d on Oct. 22.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans, though wary of giving advice \u2062to their House colleagues, have \u2063also shown signs of impatience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, I\u2019m not an expert on \u200bthe\u2064 House,\u201d Senate Minority Leader\u200c Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on \u201cFace\u200b the Nation\u201d on Oct.\u200b 22. \u201cI have my hands full\u2062 here in \u200dthe Senate, and we\u2019re going to \u2062do our job\u2064 and\u2063 hope the House can get functional here \u200bsometime\u200b soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>More than two-thirds of\u2064 Americans\u200b say the \u200bHouse \u200dshould\u2063 elect a speaker\u200d as \u200csoon as possible according to\u2063 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suffolk.edu\/-\/media\/suffolk\/documents\/academics\/research-at-suffolk\/suprc\/polls\/national\/2023\/10_23_2023_marginals_embargoed_1.pdf?la=en&#038;hash=70BA9F3E1B524CE8D52AB6C553F49E0648CB0515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today\/Suffolk University\u2063 poll<\/a> released Oct. \u200c22. An Oct. 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23130241\/poll-biden-economy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN\/SSRS\u200c poll<\/a> showed that 74\u200d percent of respondents disapprove\u2064 of the way Republican leaders in \u200bCongress are\u200c handling \u2063their jobs.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Republicans briefly considered a\u200c workaround last \u2064week that was aimed at opening the House for\u200d business while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wednesday-afternoon-update-speaker-race-continues-biden-not-invited-to-popes-funeral-and-more\/\" title=\"Wednesday Afternoon Update: Speaker Race Continues, Biden Not Invited To Pope\u2019s Funeral, And More\">speaker race continues<\/a>. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who was speaker designee at\u2063 the time, and other Republicans\u200b proposed the idea to temporarily invest Mr. McHenry with the full powers of the speakership.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jordan later said it\u200b was an attempt\u200c to &#8220;lower the\u2062 temperature&#8221; within the tense Republican conference while allowing the House to conduct business.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The matter was dropped on Oct. \u200c19 after a \u2063large number \u2064of Republicans opposed\u200c the idea.<\/p>\n<h2>Hard\u200d Work Ahead<\/h2>\n<p>Whoever claims the gavel will also inherit the challenge of \u200bgoverning \u2063with\u200c an \u2064often-ungovernable majority.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. McCarthy was ousted from \u200bthe\u2064 speakership \u200bon Oct. 3 by eight Republicans over the objection of\u200c 210 others. The move was successful only \u2063because 208\u200b Democrats joined the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/university-of-virginia-student-paper-pressures-administration-to-ban-mike-pence-from-speaking\/\" title=\"University of Virginia Student Paper Pressures Administration to Ban Mike Pence from Speaking\">similar small group<\/a> of GOP members defeated a continuing resolution presented by\u200c the very conservative House Freedom Caucus and the more pragmatic Main Street Caucus.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed\u2064 30-day extension of spending accompanied by an overall 8 percent cut in non-defense\u200c discretionary \u200bspending\u200c was intended\u2063 to forestall an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-live-kevin-mccarthy-gives-update-on-government-funding-and-joe-biden-impeachment\/\" title=\"LIVE: Kevin McCarthy updates on government funding and Joe Biden impeachment.\">imminent government\u200d shutdown<\/a> while allowing more \u200ctime\u200d to complete the 2024 appropriations process.<\/p>\n<p>Republican infighting during \u2064the 118th Congress has caused some observers \u200cto wonder if any \u200dspeaker can bring the Republican \u200dconference to heel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a \u200cvery \u200dreal danger that [the House will] elect\u200b somebody, and three or four or five \u2063weeks from now, you\u2019re going to have a group of people blow up and decide to go back into the\u2063 same mess,\u201d former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said in an interview on \u2064\u201cFox News Sunday.\u201d \u201cSo they need \u200dto pick somebody to get stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous candidates for the\u2063 speakership were undone\u2064 by their perceived leaning \u200din one \u200dideological direction or \u200canother.<\/p>\n<p>Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) was elected speaker designee on Oct. 11. His candidacy was derailed\u200c almost immediately \u2064by supporters of his opponent,\u200d Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who\u200d considered Mr. Scalise too tied to the insider politics of Washington \u200dby virtue \u200bof his position in conference leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jordan was the elected\u2062 speaker designee. But his candidacy\u200b was undone \u200dby mostly more moderate members who objected to Mr. Jordan\u2019s seemingly aggressive \u200cleadership and far-right policy positions.<\/p>\n<p>Both \u2064candidates were well-known outside the House of Representatives. Most of \u200bthe nine\u2064 candidates in the next round have much lower profiles. Collectively, they\u200d present a range of ideological\u200c viewpoints within \u200cRepublican conservatism.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are\u200c slated \u200cto meet at\u2064 6:30 \u2063p.m. on\u200b Oct. 23 for their\u200d candidate forum.<\/p>\n<p>A\u2064 conference\u200c vote on the candidates is expected at \u200d9:00 a.m. on Oct. 24.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. McHenry said he hoped \u200dto see a vote on \u2063the conference floor as early as Oct. 24 with the election concluded by Oct. 27.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How has the \u200bdisarray within the Republican Party affected their \u200cability\u200c to effectively govern?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Government funding, which would have avoided a shutdown, \u200cwas \u200drejected by \u200c44 Republicans\u200b and all Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The current \u2063state\u200b of \u2063disarray within the Republican Party \u200chas left many\u2064 questioning\u200c their ability to effectively govern. The ongoing speaker\u200c election has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aoc-says-there-is-absolutely-grounds-for-effort-to-oust-mccarthy-from-speakership\/\" title=\"AOC asserts strong grounds to remove McCarthy from speakership.\">exposed deep divisions<\/a> within the party and has hindered progress on important issues.<\/p>\n<p>As Republicans return to\u2062 Washington \u2063for yet another attempt at electing a new speaker, the stakes are high. The challenges facing the country, including providing \u2064support to Ukraine\u200d and Israel, \u2064resolving \u2062the\u200c appropriations process, and securing\u2062 the southern border, require swift and decisive action.<\/p>\n<p>The delay\u200d in\u200b electing\u200c a new speaker has not gone unnoticed \u2062by the American public. \u2064Recent polls show that a majority of Americans believe the House should elect a speaker as soon as possible. Additionally, the disapproval\u200b ratings for Republican leaders in Congress are alarmingly high.<\/p>\n<p>Given\u200c the\u2062 circumstances, it is crucial that\u200d House Republicans \u2062come together and choose \u2064a leader who can \u2064unite the party and effectively govern. This leader must be able to navigate the \u200ddiverse \u200binterests within the \u2063party and make the tough decisions necessary to move the \u2062country forward.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever claims the gavel \u200cwill undoubtedly face a difficult task. They will need to\u200d find a way\u200b to \u200dgovern with a majority that \u2064often proves to be unmanageable. The recent ousting of Kevin McCarthy as speaker is a\u200c clear example\u2064 of the challenges that come with leading the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>The events of\u200b the past few weeks have\u200b highlighted the need \u200dfor\u2062 strong and\u200c decisive leadership within the Republican Party. It is time for House \u2064Republicans to\u200d put\u2063 aside their differences and \u200dcome\u200c together for the sake of the country.
