Needless to\u2064 say, the sticker shock\u200c made it easy \u200bto\u2064 despise The Washington\u2062 Post on Monday morning when I\u2063 came \u2064across their article titled\u200b \u201cBiden\u2019s Economy Is Great Everywhere Except in the\u2062 Polls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this piece, Matthew Yglesias\u200b treats\u200b readers to 800 words of Biden \u2063praise, \u2063lamenting the poll results that \u200cshow a majority of swing-state voters preferred \u2062Donald Trump\u2019s economy over Joe Biden\u2019s, with\u200b only \u206335\u200b percent trusting the incumbent on \u2062the issue. (Independents trust\u200d Biden even less, with only 25 percent.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-917391630\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4f7b7f3da6fd7c7cf1450dc32a331ded fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4f7b7f3da6fd7c7cf1450dc32a331ded\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs the US\u200b economy \u2062continues to improve, President <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/ql81c\/https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/candidates\/joe-biden-2024\/\">Joe<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/ql81c\/https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/candidates\/joe-biden-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/ql81c\/https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/candidates\/joe-biden-2024\/\">Biden<\/a> continues to not get credit for it,\u201d Yglesias \u2062complains.<\/p>\n<p>When your job is to run\u2062 public relations\u2064 for Democrats, your \u2062strategy becomes spin over self-reflection.\u2063 That\u2019s \u200cwhy, to\u200c comfort himself and other Democrats, Yglesias instantly looks \u2063outward, comparing Biden to other leaders of the free world. \u201c[T]he trend\u200d is clear,\u201d he says. \u201cIncumbents of all ideological flavors are losing \u2064everywhere and are \u200balmost universally unpopular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those \u2063comparisons would\u2064 only really work, though, \u200cif Japan were no different than Germany, and Germany were no different \u2063than the United States. And since when can \u2062approval ratings be boiled down\u2064 strictly to the value of\u2063 the dollar? Maybe that\u2019s why \u200bYglesias\u200c doesn\u2019t dwell on that losing argument\u200d too\u200c long.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that when it\u200d comes \u200bto Biden\u2019s approval, all \u2062the arguments are losing ones. Thus the media resort to doing\u2062 what they always do: telling you to\u2062 stop believing your lying\u200d eyes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-dd8b94023e93bfc5913e7ea70eee0115 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-dd8b94023e93bfc5913e7ea70eee0115\"><\/div>\n<p>According to Yglesias \u2014 and, if you\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/25\/inflation-is-cooling-but-high-prices-will-stick-around.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paying attention<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/inflation-is-cooling-food-inflation-could-get-worse-bb373e06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rest of the<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/10\/business\/inflation-price-increases-explained\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflation-is-cooling<\/a>\u201d \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/23\/business\/economy\/inflation-turning-point.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media<\/a> \u200c\u2014 the\u2064 inflation situation is \u2064\u201cgreatly improved,\u201d \u201cAmericans\u2019 inflation-adjusted net worth surged \u200dbetween 2019 and 2022, and real\u200d incomes are up\u2064 as well,\u201d the bounceback from government-mandated Covid lockdowns were \u201crapid\u201d and \u201crobust,\u201d and Americans are definitely better off than they were before.<\/p>\n<p>See, the <em>real<\/em> problem\u2062 is those incredulous voters whose memories \u200cserve them better than the commander-in-chief\u2019s. If only they would just \u2063\u201cforgive and forget.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s \u2064hard to \u201cforget\u201d \u200byour present reality. Just\u200b ask the \u200bdad \u2063slapping another\u2064 layer of duct tape\u2062 on the minivan bumper because outlandish used-car prices mean even a modest\u200d upgrade isn\u2019t feasible. Or any \u200ccoupon-clipping\u2064 mother in the grocery store, who\u2019s likely \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/23\/grocery-shop-with-me-to-fact-check-bidens-inflation-up-hardly-at-all-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paying some\u2062 70 percent more<\/a> to feed her family than just a few\u200c years ago, a number not reflected in the consumer price index. Americans priced out of air travel\u200b can\u2019t expect\u200c to\u200d find road trip-friendly prices \u200cat the pump. And forget graduating from renter to homeowner. In this competitive market, rapidly rising interest \u2063rates just add insult \u200bto \u200cinjury \u200dwith each rejected offer.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to \u2063claims from the \u200bmedia and economic \u201cexperts,\u201d\u200c Americans are emphatically far worse off than they were a few\u200c years ago. \u200dAccording to\u200b <em>the same Morning Consult\/Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.morningconsult.com\/analysis\/biden-trump-swing-state-polling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a> Yglesias <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.morningconsult.com\/articles\/morning-consult-bloomberg-swing-states-2024\">cites<\/a><\/em>, \u201cRoughly 3 in 4 swing-state voters said the country\u2019s economy is headed down the wrong \u2062track and they are more likely than \u2062not to say their personal financial situation was\u200c better \u2062off under Trump than it is under Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-59eded053ddb1f4182cf24f52e2bf330 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-59eded053ddb1f4182cf24f52e2bf330\"><\/div>\n<p>With these \u2062unfortunate circumstances rightly coloring voters\u2019 perception of Biden, Yglesias\u2062 says his best bet at winning \u2064again in 2024 is the likelihood of Trump being his opponent. \u201cRepublicans\u2063 aren\u2019t planning to run a fresh-faced outsider onto whom the public can project its hopes and dreams,\u201d he writes. \u201cDonald Trump is a known and disliked quantity\u200b who is more plagued \u200dwith scandals\u200d and legal problems than \u2063he was at\u200c any time\u200d during \u2064his presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Never mind that most voters can \u200bdiscern from whence these \u201cscandals and legal problems\u201d stem (ahem, Biden\u2019s Justice \u200bDepartment and Yglesias-boosting media), but beyond that, \u200dthe \u200dproblem with this conclusion\u2063 is two-fold \u2014 and\u2062 simple. <\/p>\n<p>First, poll numbers showing voters\u2019 major dissatisfaction with \u201cBidenomics\u201d fail to capture the other major\u2064 categories where he\u2019s bombed. These would include the \u2064wide-open southern border. \u2064Customs\u200c and Border Protection just released September\u2019s numbers showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/23\/more-illegal-aliens-flooded-the-southern-border-in-september-than-ever-recorded-in-a-single-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest single-month arrest total\u200d of all time<\/a>: a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">269,735<\/a> (this\u200c despite the corrupt media\u2019s \u200cassurances that the border is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/17\/axios-calls-open-border-more-fortified-than-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more fortified than \u200cit\u2019s ever been<\/a>\u201c).\u200d It would also include Biden\u2019s foreign policy record, which involves sending\u200d billions of taxpayer dollars to\u2064 Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/07\/poll-majority-of-americans-oppose-biden-mcconnell-spending-binge-on-ukraine-proxy-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">against<\/a> Americans\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/16\/poll-less-than-half-of-americans-support-shipping-our-weapons-to-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wishes<\/a>, causing the deaths of 13 servicemembers by <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/16\/americas-botched-afghanistan-withdrawal-last-year-was-entirely-bidens-fault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">botching the Afghanistan withdrawal<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/09\/if-democrats-dont-want-blame-for-appeasing-iran-and-hamas-they-should-stop-doing-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sending billions of dollars<\/a> \u2063to sponsors of terrorism\u2064 that funded the massacre of Israeli\u200b civilians.<\/p>\n<p>Second, \u200bthis conclusion \u2064ignores that Trump\u2019s strengths shine in \u2063Biden\u2019s biggest\u2062 weaknesses. Not only did he help broker the \u200dpeace-giving Abraham Accords in the Middle\u200d East and \u200bsignal strength to Israel\u2019s adversaries, but he also \u2062made border\u2062 security a hallmark of his administration. Just\u2062 look at the\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrest numbers<\/a> from 2020 through January 2021 compared to after Biden took\u2062 office.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also facilitated a booming economy focused on domestic production. Voters haven\u2019t forgotten Trump-era gas\u2064 and grocery prices before state and federal Covid responses \u2064torpedoed the boom,\u2064 and those probably carry a bit\u2064 more electoral weight than mean tweets and whatever other personality blemishes critics find distasteful.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u200c Yglesias is so\u200d interested in talking about polls, maybe he should look at \u200dhow much they <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show<\/a> voters care about the \u200beconomy \u2014 it\u2019s a top (and, for many, <em>the<\/em> top) issue.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to getting \u2062a \u2064bumbling Biden over the finish line once again, \u200cpolls and facts and inflation don\u2019t \u2062actually matter \u200cto the corrupt media.
