(AP Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The office of the United States special envoy for Iran has also come forward to support the two women in an Oct. 22 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USEnvoyIran\/status\/1716149496885682468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on \u2062X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Niloufar and Elaheh should never have been imprisoned, and we condemn their \u2062sentences,&#8221; stated Deputy\u200b Special Envoy\u200d Abram Paley.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Iranian regime incarcerates journalists because it fears the truth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 U.S. special envoy for Iran is responsible for developing, coordinating,\u2063 and\u200c implementing the State\u200c Department&#8217;s\u200d Iran policy and reports directly to \u2064the Secretary of State.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, both Ms.\u2064 Hamedi and Ms. Mohammadi were recognized in\u2063 Time Magazine&#8217;s list of the world&#8217;s most influential people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In addition, \u2064along with another imprisoned journalist, Narges Mohammadi, they were\u200b honored with the UNESCO\/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize by the United Nations &#8220;for their dedication to truth and accountability.&#8221;\u2064 <\/p>\n<h2>Arrested After\u200d Reporting on Death in Custody<\/h2>\n<p> Ms. Hamedi and Ms. Mohammadi have been in pre-trial detention since \u2064September 22 \u200dof last year after being among the \u2062first journalists to report on \u200cthe hospitalization and death in custody of Mahsa\u2063 Amini.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The morality police\u2064 in Tehran detained Ms. Amini for\u200b allegedly not wearing a \u200cproper headscarf, a serious offense under\u200c Iran&#8217;s Shi&#8217;ite \u2062version of Sharia law. The morality\u200b police claim\u2064 that Ms. Amini suffered\u2063 a heart attack and died of natural causes. Last September, the \u200bBiden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imposed<\/a> sanctions \u2064on Iran&#8217;s \u2062morality police &#8220;for their abuse and \u2062violence against Iranian women and their violation of the rights of peaceful Iranian protesters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>According to the\u2063 CPJ, at \u2062least 95 journalists have been arrested\u200c in connection \u200dwith the protests. Iran was <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2022\/09\/names-of-journalists-arrested-in-irans-anti-state-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ranked<\/a> as the world&#8217;s worst jailer of journalists in the CPJ&#8217;s 2022 \u200bprison census, which documented individuals behind bars as of December 1.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Elnaz Mohammadi, \u200cthe head of the social\u200b issues desk at Hammihan newspaper and the twin sister\u200d of Elahe Mohammadi, was arrested in February for unknown reasons. She was released on bail a\u200b week later. The details of her charges and court date are not publicly known at this time. <\/p>\n<h2>Teenage Girl Declared Brain \u2063Dead After \u200cAlleged Encounter with Police<\/h2>\n<p> \u200b Earlier this month, a teenage girl in Iran fell into a coma\u2063 at a train station in Tehran. According to an October 22 report from Iranian state \u200bmedia,\u2064 she has since been declared \u2062brain dead, raising concerns of another wave of unrest and protests.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The hospitalization \u200bof \u200cthis\u200c 16-year-old girl has led to \u2063accusations by a rights group and activists that\u2064 she was beaten into a coma by Iran&#8217;s morality police.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/hengaw.net\/en\/news\/2023\/10\/hengaws-report-on-a-teenage-girl-a-victim-of-mandatory-hijab-in-tehrans-metro-in-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hengaw<\/a>, a human rights organization, Armita Garawand suffered a severe physical assault by the morality\u200c police for not complying with national hijab rules.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>State-run media claims that the girl fainted due to a drop \u200din blood pressure, causing her to hit the side of the train\u2063 carriage.<\/p>\n<p>Fars, Iran&#8217;s state news agency, published an interview with the girl&#8217;s \u2064parents in which\u200b they deny any \u200cattack.
