The Times later received a blue &#8220;verified&#8221; badge on \u200cThursday, which\u200d is\u2062 available for purchase by anyone.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation was given for this humiliating demotion on X,\u200b according to The Washington Post. Prior to Musk&#8217;s ownership\u200b of X, verified badges were\u200b granted to \u200dverified \u200bpoliticians, journalists, and public figures. Musk introduced a subscription-based system where\u200c individuals could get blue badges for $8 a month and &#8220;verified organizations&#8221; could obtain gold badges for a monthly\u2063 fee of\u200c at least $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times\u200c refused\u2064 to pay the fee, prompting\u200b Musk to strip the Times of \u200bits verification badge. However, Musk later allowed the publication\u2062 to have its badge \u200cwithout paying the fee.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, The New York Times published a story accusing Israel of bombing a Gaza hospital.
