The carnage spread into kibbutz communities, where Hamas murdered,\u200c raped, \u2063and kidnapped hundreds \u200dof civilians. Babies were reportedly beheaded by their Hamas\u2062 executioners, who were \u2063videoed \u2064parading Jewish \u2062victims in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>More \u2064than 1,400\u200b Israelis were killed, \u200bwith some 200 taken hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian supports have\u200c called Israel colonialist\u200d oppressors who brought the violence on themselves\u2063 because\u2063 they forced Palestinians to \u200clive in Gaza. But\u2062 Israeli supporters say that Palestinians don&#8217;t recognize\u2063 Israel&#8217;s right to exist and vowed\u2064 to destroy all the \u2062Jews and take back the land.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<\/div>\n<p>As events in the Middle East continue to unfold, conservatives believe they&#8217;re seeing a shift in how businesses and donors view\u2064 far-left college campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Stefan\u200b Padfield is an\u2062 associate with the National Center for Public Policy Research&#8217;s Free Enterprise Project, which bills itself \u200das an opponent of the &#8220;woke&#8221; takeover of corporations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we&#8217;re going to look back on this as a tipping-point moment,&#8221; Mr. Padfield told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:250px\" class=\"alignright\"><figcaption>Stefan Padfield is with the National Center for Public Policy Research, a conservative think tank.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The horror\u2063 and the atrocity of what \u2064we saw, followed by what can only be described \u200cas \u2062seeming \u2063expressions \u200bof glee&#8221; from Hamas supporters on campuses \u2063across the \u2064nation, triggered outrage\u2063 from corporations, he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2><strong>Canceled Jobs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>Harvard University\u2063 became the epicenter of the debate after 34 Harvard \u200dstudent organizations \u2064signed\u2063 onto \u200da letter from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestine-studies.org\/en\/node\/1654370#:~:text=Israeli%20violence%20has%20structured%20every,death%2C%20both%20slow%20and%20sudden.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Palestine Solidarity Committee<\/a> (PSC) on Oct. 7 \u2014 the day Hamas launched its surprise attack on Israel\u2014stating they held Israel &#8220;entirely responsible&#8221; for Hamas&#8217; brutality.<\/p>\n<p>However, protests at other elite\u200c universities, such as the \u200dUniversity of Pennsylvania \u200d(UPenn), Columbia\u2063 University, and New \u2064York\u200d University \u200b(NYU), intensified the firestorm.<\/p>\n<p>The rebukes from all sides \u200csent Harvard&#8217;s leadership scrambling, resulting in three statements as condemnation mounted and donors closed \u200dcheckbooks.<\/p>\n<p>At first, Harvard University\u2064 President\u200d Claudine Gay stated its leadership was &#8220;heartbroken&#8221; by the violence but later condemned Hamas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;On Oct.10, she stated, &#8220;As the events of recent\u200d days continue to reverberate, let there be \u2062no doubt that I condemn the\u200b terrorist\u200b atrocities perpetrated by Hamas.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New York\u200b law firm Davis Polk &#038;\u2064 Wardwell on Oct. 17 withdrew \u200cjob offers to law students\u200d who signed on to public statements blaming Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Neil Barr, managing \u200dpartner of Davis Polk, told members of the firm \u2062on Tuesday that it had revoked job offers to three \u2062law \u200dstudents in leadership\u2062 positions at Harvard and Columbia \u2064University groups that issued statements, blaming Israel for the Hamas attack, \u2064according to an email obtained by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, New York law\u200d firm \u200dWinston &#038; Strawn\u200d rescinded\u200d an offer to the president of New York University&#8217;s Student Bar Association last week after the student published &#8220;inflammatory&#8221; comments, the firm stated in a release.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>On \u2062Oct. 10, the student president, Ryna Workman, posted \u200ban NYU Student Bar Association&#8217;s newsletter \u200dstating &#8220;Israel bears full responsibility&#8221; for Hamas&#8217; attack.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;As communicated yesterday to all Winston personnel, we remain outraged and deeply saddened\u200c by the\u2063 violent attack on Israel over the weekend. (Jack\u2064 Guez\/AFP\u200b via Getty \u200cImages)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2><strong>Coporate Backlash<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>Several CEOs, \u200bincluding Bill Ackman, a billionaire hedge \u2064fund manager, called out Harvard that same day, saying the university should release student names for the groups\u200b signing onto the letter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Ackman, the CEO\u2063 of\u200b Pershing Square\u200c Capital Management, posted on X that &#8220;a number of \u2063CEOs&#8221; had contacted \u2062him about Harvard releasing a\u200d list of names so &#8220;none of us inadvertently hire any of their members.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;One\u2062 should\u200c not be able to hide\u2062 behind a corporate shield when issuing statements\u200d supporting the actions of terrorists, who, we now learn, have\u2062 beheaded babies, among other inconceivably \u2064despicable acts,&#8221;\u2062 Mr. Ackman stated on X.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;I would like to know\u2064 so I\u2063 know never to hire these people,&#8221; Jonathan\u200d Neman, CEO of restaurant chain Sweetgreen, said in an X post.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I\u200d second this,&#8221; Jake Wurzak, CEO of DoveHill Capital Management, said in \u2062response to Mr. Ackman&#8217;s post.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We \u200bare in as well,&#8221; said Michael Broukhim, the CEO of FabFitFun, a lifestyle firm.<\/p>\n<p>Left-wing students who were quick to cancel those supporting Israel are now recanting or saying they\u200b didn&#8217;t understand what they were signing, according to\u2062 news reports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s always the\u2062 irony of when the boycotters complain that they are being boycotted,&#8221; said \u2063William Jacobson, a law professor at Cornell University, told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Jewish supporters of Israel confront Palestinian protesters\u2064 near Times Square in New York on Oct.\u200c 13, 2023. \u2063(Richard Moore\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr. Jacobson founded the Legal Insurrection Foundation and Criticalrace.org, \u2062which tracks Critical Race Theory \u200cand DEI \u200dinstances on college campuses. Both \u200bideologies assert that America is\u200b systemically \u2064racist \u2062and \u2064advocate using discrimination to combat racism.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He said there has been ongoing bias against Jewish speakers on college campuses. Yet, Russell Rickford, a Cornell University assistant history\u2064 professor, was free to call the Hamas attack on Israel &#8220;exhilarating.&#8221;\u2064 He later apologized for his choice of words.<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, corporations may want\u200c to avoid having Hamas sympathizers on their payroll, Mr.\u200b Jacobson said, because\u2064 it may\u200c be\u2063 difficult to explain that association to clients.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Padfield added that Palestinian supporters on campuses cheering Hamas have focused\u2063 the public&#8217;s \u2064attention on the extremes of university\u2064 culture.<\/p>\n<p>The public sees \u200dhow universities\u200c that \u200cembrace DEI reprimand students\u2063 for misgendering a classmate but allow support for a designated terrorist group,\u2062 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And this\u200d is a moment where they&#8217;re seeing it in a way \u200bthat they simply cannot look \u2063away,&#8221; he said.\u200d &#8220;It&#8217;s in your face\u2062 of how\u200d radicalized our most elite institutions \u2063have become.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives have warned the Left that cancel culture would eventually \u2063backfire, which is\u2064 now happening, Mr. Padfield said.<\/p>\n<p>And up \u2063until now, there&#8217;s been no consequences for left-wing aggression, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about power for \u2064the left; it&#8217;s not about principles,&#8221; he\u200b said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Columbia University students\u200d participate in a\u2064 rally in support of \u200bPalestine at \u2062the university on Oct. 12, 2023. The \u2063Wexner Foundation, known for \u200bL Brands, the former parent company of Victoria&#8217;s Secret and Bath and Body Works, cut its\u200b ties,\u200b as did Kenneth Griffin of Citadel,\u200d who reportedly gave 300 million to Harvard last year alone.<\/p>\n<p>Backers roundly \u200ccriticized\u2064 UPenn for a perceived weak response to antisemitism on campus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In a scathing Oct. 15 letter to the university, David Magerman, a venture capitalist and \u200bsignificant UPenn donor, cut off his support because of the university&#8217;s &#8220;misguided moral compass&#8221; that\u2062 failed\u200c to\u200b &#8220;recognize evil when \u2062it \u2064is staring us all in the face.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He \u2064said he was &#8220;ashamed&#8221; to be associated with the university and also\u2064 condemned it for allowing \u200ba &#8220;Palestine \u200cWrites&#8221; festival with speakers known for antisemitic comments to take place on \u2064campus in September.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I refuse to donate\u2062 another\u200b dollar to Penn. There is no action anyone at Penn can take to change that. I&#8217;m \u200cnot\u200c asking for \u2062any actions. You have \u200cshown me who you are. (Kevork Djansezian\/Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Apollo Global \u200dManagement CEO Marc\u2064 Rowan appeared on\u200b CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Squawk Box&#8221; on\u200d Oct. 12, denouncing what\u2064 he saw as a double standard of free\u200d speech on \u200dcampus\u200d that\u2063 excused antisemitism.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Microaggressions \u2064are condemned with extreme\u2062 moral outrage, and yet\u200b violence, particularly violence against Jews, antisemitism, seems to have found a\u200d place of tolerance on campus,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rowan is the\u200d chairman of the board \u200cof advisers \u200bto \u2064the \u2062Wharton\u200d School,\u200c UPenn&#8217;s College of \u200bBusiness, and\u2064 in 2018, he \u2064and his wife gave the business school $50 million. He called for donors who typically send millions of dollars to the university\u2064 to send $1 as a message, according to news reports.<\/p>\n<p>And like Harvard&#8217;s leadership, UPenn&#8217;s \u2063president issued\u200d multiple statements as it\u200b struggled to quell the backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Magill stated on Oct. 15 that the university should have spoken\u200d up sooner to clarify its position on the pro-Palestinian \u2063festival.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. \u200c18, she sent another email warning students against hate speech on campus. Penn would\u2062 not &#8220;tolerate and will take immediate action\u2062 against any incitement of violence&#8221; and \u200bactual violence, the message stated.<\/p>\n<p>A Jewish student \u200bwho is a junior at UPenn told The Epoch Times she agreed that Ms. Magill should have come out with a stronger statement\u200c against Hamas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:250px\" class=\"alignright\"><figcaption>Jason Bedrick is a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think \u2062tank. (Courtesy \u200bof the \u200dHeritage Foundation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The anti-Israeli protests on campus have been frightening\u200c at times because of the hatred behind their\u200d chants, said the student, who asked not to be identified.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From the river\u200b to the \u2063sea, Palestine should be free&#8221; is another way of\u2062 saying Israel should be annihilated, she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Pro-Palestinian chants of\u200d &#8220;one solution, Intifada\u2062 revolution&#8221; remind her of Adolph Hitler&#8217;s &#8220;final solution&#8221; during \u2064World War\u200d II when Germany committed genocide against the Jews, \u2063she said.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Tired of &#8216;Radical Leftist&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jason Bedrick, a research fellow at the \u2063Heritage Foundation&#8217;s Center for Education, said universities are now reaping what \u200cthey have\u2064 sown.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think\u2062 that\u200b the universities are\u200b experiencing a\u200c backlash that they are unaccustomed to,&#8221; \u2063he \u200bsaid. &#8220;They&#8217;ve let campus radicals run rampant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr.\u2062 Bedrick said Students for Justice \u200cin\u2063 Palestine at Tufts University went\u200d further\u200c than those at Harvard by\u200b calling Hamas terrorists &#8220;liberators&#8221; whose paraglider attack &#8220;showed the \u200ccreativity necessary to take back stolen land.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Universities\u2062 have gone so far to the\u2063 Left in the name of DEI, which critics say is based \u2063on\u2064 Marxism, that they\u2062 have all but abandoned \u2064mainstream American \u2062views, \u2063Mr. Bedrick said.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that calling for genocide falls under the First Amendment is\u2064 disingenuous, he said,\u2063 pointing out that \u200dHarvard recently received\u2063 a zero ranking from the Foundation for Individual Rights Expression (FIRE) on free speech.<\/p>\n<p>Universities were\u2064 quick to take moral positions on Russia&#8217;s attack on Ukraine, but many have\u2063 been silent \u200bor slow \u200cto condemn an actual terror attack, \u2063he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The American people are tired of it; alumni, donors, are tired of it,&#8221; Mr.\u200c Bedrick said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Columbia University students participate\u200c in a rally in support \u2062of Palestine at the university on Oct. 12, \u200b2023. (Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I think that the colleges really need to look themselves in the mirror and ask how we got to this point, where students are glorifying terrorists marching around campus, chanting genocidal \u2062slogans,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u2064Padfield added that some\u2064 pushback started \u2064over\u2064 incidents involving conservative speakers before the Hamas attack.\u200d Those in the legal field \u2062called\u200d for law firms\u2064 not to hire Stanford law students after they shouted down 5th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Kyle Duncan during a campus appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Now that\u2062 people see the result of far-left ideologies on campus, Mr. Padfield says it&#8217;s time for donors to demand an end to &#8220;radical leftists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Philanthropists should \u2064require the universities to stop allowing \u2063&#8221;anti-American, antisemitic&#8221; agendas, he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\"><em>Tom Ozimek and Reuters contributed to this report.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>are also withdrawing their support from universities that harbor pro-Hamas students.
