Here\u2019s a look at where\u2063 things stand,\u2063 how their stretched-out standoff compares to past strikes, and what happens next.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The same group\u200c of \u2064chief\u2063 executives from the biggest studios had made a major deal just over a week earlier \u2064with striking writers, whose leaders \u200dcelebrated their gains on many issues actors are also \u200cfighting for: long-term pay, consistency of employment, and control over the use of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>But \u200bthe actors\u2019 talks\u2063 were tepid,\u200b with days off between sessions and no reports of \u2062progress. Why \u200bare you \u2062walking \u200baway from \u2062the\u200b table?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reasons, according to the Alliance of Motion\u200b Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), included a union demand for\u2064 a \u200cfee for each \u2062subscriber to streaming services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSAG-AFTRA\u2064 gave the member companies an ultimatum: either agree to a proposal for\u2062 a tax on subscribers as\u200b well as all other open items, or else the strike would \u200dcontinue,\u201d the AMPTP said in a statement to the AP. \u201cThe member companies responded to SAG-AFTRA\u2019s ultimatum that unfortunately, the tax on subscribers poses an untenable economic burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, \u200cone of \u200dthe executives in on \u2064the bargaining sessions, told investors on\u2064 an earnings call Wednesday that \u201cThis really broke our momentum unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SAG-AFTRA \u2062leaders\u200c said it was ridiculous to frame this demand as as though it were a tax on customers, \u2062and said it was the \u200dexecutives themselves who \u200bwanted to shift from a model based\u2064 on a show\u2019s popularity to one based on number of subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe \u2064made big moves in their\u2063 direction that have \u200cjust \u2062been ignored and not responded to,\u201d\u200b Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/who-cares-trump-quits-screen-actors-guild-after-they-threaten-disciplinary-action\/\" title=\"\u2018Who Cares!\u2019: Trump Quits Screen Actor\u2019s Guild After They Threaten \u2018Disciplinary\u2019 Action\">national executive director<\/a> and chief negotiator, told the AP. \u201cWe \u200bmade changes to our AI \u2063proposal. Their union has never been on a strike this long, nor been on strike at all \u200bsince before many of its members were born. Not\u2064 even its veteran leaders, like Crabtree-Ireland, with the union for 20\u2064 years, have found\u2063 themselves in quite these circumstances.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As they did for months before \u2062the talks broke off, members and leaders will rally, picket and speak out publicly until the studios signal a willingness to talk again. No one knows how \u200clong that \u2062will take. SAG-AFTRA says it is willing to \u200bresume at any \u2064time, but that won\u2019t change its demands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that they\u200b think that we\u2019re going to cower,\u201d\u2063 Drescher said.\u200c \u201cBut \u2064that\u2019s never going to happen because this is a crossroads and we must stay\u2063 on course.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>How Did Previous Actors Strikes Play Out?<\/h2>\n<p>Hollywood \u200bactors\u200c strikes have been less frequent\u2062 and shorter than\u2062 those by writers. The Screen Actors\u200c Guild (they added the \u201cAFTRA\u201d in \u2064a 2011 merger) has gone on strike against film \u200band TV studios only three times in its history.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In each case, \u200bemerging technology fueled the dispute. The vote\u2063 to strike \u200btook place in the home\u200c of actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, the parents of\u200c current SAG-AFTRA member\u2063 and vocal striker\u2063 Jamie Lee Curtis.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-strike, the actors and studios called a truce so \u200dall \u200bcould attend the Academy Awards\u2014a move forbidden under \u2064today\u2019s union rules. \u200cHost Bob Hope \u2063called the gathering \u201cHollywood\u2019s most glamorous \u200dstrike meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, a compromise was reached where \u200cSAG dropped demands for residuals from past films in \u2062exchange for a donation to \u200ctheir pension fund, along with \u200ba formula for payment\u200c when future films aired on TV. Their 42-day work stoppage\u200d began and \u2063ended all within the span of the\u2063 much longer writers strike.<\/p>\n<p>A \u200d1980 strike would \u200cbe\u2062 the actors\u2019 longest for film and television until this year. That time, they were seeking payment for their \u2063work appearing \u2063on home video cassettes and cable TV, \u2064along with significant hikes in \u200cminimum compensation for roles. A\u2064 tentative deal was reached with\u2063 significant\u200d gains but \u200dmajor compromises\u200c in both areas. Union leadership declared the strike over after 67 days, but many members were unhappy and \u2064balked at returning to\u200d work. It was nearly a month before leaders could rally enough votes to ratify\u200d the deal.<\/p>\n<p>This time, \u200bit was the Emmy Awards that fell \u200din the middle of the strike. The Television Academy held a ceremony, but after a boycott was called, only one acting winner, Powers Boothe,\u200b was there to accept his trophy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>What\u2019s Happening to\u200d Movies and Tv \u2063Shows?<\/h2>\n<p>The return \u200bof writers has gotten \u200dthe Hollywood production machine churning\u2063 again, with rooms full of scribes penning new seasons \u200bof \u200dshows that had been suspended and film writers finishing scripts. But the finished product will await the\u2063 end of actors strike, and production will remain suspended many TV shows and dozens of films, including \u201cWicked,\u201d \u201cDeadpool 3,\u201d and \u201cMission Impossible\u2014Dead Reckoning Part 2.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Emmys, whose nominations were announced the \u2064same day \u200cthe actors \u200bstrike was called, opted to wait for the stars\u2062 this time and move their\u2062 ceremony from September to January, though that date could be threatened too.<\/p>\n<p>The Oscars \u200dare a long way off in March, \u200dbut the campaigns to win them are usually well underway by now. With some exceptions\u2014non-studio productions\u200c approved by the union\u2014performers are prohibited from promoting \u2064their films at press junkets\u2063 or on red carpets.
