She describes the \u201cmovement\u201d she\u2019s created as an exercise in\u200c \u201cconfidence.\u201d But is \u2064Bahsoon \u201cvibing\u201d for personal gratifications, as \u200dshe suggests in interviews \u200band in her video \u2064captions, or is she vibing for her \u200dfollowers on TikTok?<\/p>\n<p>Bahsoon is always using headphones or earphones\u2064 in her videos, which likely \u200bmeans the\u200d other passengers \u2063cannot hear\u200c the music she\u2019s dancing to.\u2062 From the perspective of her\u2063 fellow travelers, Bahsoon likely doesn\u2019t \u200clook\u200c confident; she looks \u2062bizarre and self-conceited \u200cwhile staring into her phone\u2063 and dancing salaciously in \u200dpublic to no\u200d music.<\/p>\n<p>Lohanny Santos, who calls herself \u201cNew York\u2019s tube girl,\u201d \u200cposted a video of what \u2064it looks like from\u200d the perspective\u200d of bystanders.\u200d Below, you can watch Santos\u2019 video and what it\u2063 looks like for someone watching her \u200dmake the video.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Either everyone participating in \u2064the tube girl trend has had their sense of propriety and self-awareness \u2064completely broken by\u2062 the internet, or they do feel\u200b awkward dancing in crowded public\u200b spaces with no music.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If they do feel embarrassment, why do it? My Gen X parents\u200c used to tell me how growing \u2063up, there\u200b would always be a \u201cspot\u201d young people would meet\u200d in junior high and high\u2064 school to socialize. There \u2063wasn\u2019t much planning, and you never knew who\u2062 exactly was going to be there. With the dawn of social networking,\u2063 the idea of \u201cthe \u200bspot\u201d \u2063died out, \u200cand millennials grew up using\u200d apps and text messaging\u200c to plan events and hang-outs.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For Gen\u200d Z, \u2063things are different. Apps aren\u2019t used to\u200d coordinate social interactions \u2014 they are the social interactions. Zoomers are reportedly glued to their screens for an average of over 7 hours a \u200cday. This is\u2064 why swaths of young women are willing \u200dto look silly in\u200c public in order\u200d to look sexy and carefree on TikTok.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This disregard for real-world interactions is impacting Zoomers\u2019 love lives. One study found that 15 percent of Gen Zers reported \u2064that they were \u2064sexually inactive, compared with only 6 \u200cpercent\u200b of Gen Xers when they \u2062were the same age.\u200b Another\u200b study found that nearly 50 percent of young men \u200dbetween 18 and 25 reported never approaching a woman for \u200ca\u2063 date.<\/p>\n<p>Chronically online \u2063and unable to forge meaningful relationships, \u2063romantic or otherwise,\u2063 it\u2019s no wonder Gen Z is the\u2063 most mentally\u200d ill generation to date.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ironic \u200cthat\u200b such disturbing \u200drates of suicide, depression, and\u2062 anxiety are coming from\u200d the generation superfixed on \u201cself-care\u201d and \u201cself-confidence.\u201d Perhaps, however, Gen-Z\u2019s self-love mantra is the reason they \u200dare spiraling into loneliness and\u2062 depression.<\/p>\n<p>St. Thomas Aquinas once wrote, \u201cHappiness is secured through virtue; it\u2062 is \u2062a\u200c good attained by \u200dman\u2019s\u2062 own will.\u201d Unfortunately, Gen Z is the most irreligious generation to date, and therefore, unlike previous generations, does not have the \u200csame spiritual foundation guiding them \u200cto live virtuous lives. \u2064Couple that with\u2063 the\u200b rise of the\u200b digital world\u2064 and\u2062 our culture\u2019s active rejection\u2064 of morality, and \u200dyou end up with the least\u200d happy generation \u2062in modern memory.<\/p>\n<p>The comments\u2063 on the \u200ctube girl trend\u2019s first video exemplify Zoomers\u2019 warped values. To\u200b our culture, Bahsoon is a hero, and her trend \u200dis even virtuous because we live\u200c in a society\u200b that swaps \u2064wisdom for foolishness and humility for pride.<\/p>\n<p>The tube girl trend is one of the most stereotypical Gen Z phenomena\u200c to \u2063come out of TikTok. It is the epitome of toxic self-obsession.
