Ben Cardin (D-MD) has announced his \u2062withdrawal from the race, leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-live-house-expected-to-vote-on-new-speaker-with-jim-jordan-as-gop-nominee\/\" title=\"LIVE: House to vote on new speaker, Jim Jordan nominated by GOP.\">field wide open<\/a> \u200bfor a highly competitive primary. Will Jawando, a\u2063 Montgomery \u2063County Council member and the first candidate to enter the senatorial race, \u200bmade the tough decision after careful consideration and\u2064 discussions with his family.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;After a lot of thought \u200cand prayer and late nights \u200bwith my wife, Michelle, \u2064and our family, I&#8217;ve decided that it&#8217;s time to take a step back\u2063 from this\u200c race,&#8221; Jawando\u2062 said in a heartfelt \u2064video announcement. \u2063&#8221;Not because we \u2064believe any less \u200cin the cause that \u2063started it. The fights we talked about in this campaign are, and always will be, the fights of my\u200c life. But after \u200dthinking long\u200c and hard about this race in\u200d particular, I frankly no longer see a path for myself \u2064to victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jawando&#8217;s exit narrows down the contenders to two: Rep. David Trone (D-MD) and Prince George\u2019s \u2063County \u200dExecutive Angela Alsobrooks. Trone, a wealthy white businessman and founder of Total Wine &#038; More, faces a\u200c tough challenge from Alsobrooks, who \u2062aims to make history as the first person of \u2064color elected to the Senate from Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Trone has \u200dpoured nearly $10 \u200cmillion into his campaign, \u2064but during the \u200bthird\u200d quarter, Alsobrooks outpaced him by raising over $1.5 million, the highest among all candidates. Meanwhile,\u200b Jawando&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maryland-democrat-drops-out-of-senate-race-to-replace-sen-ben-cardin\/\" title=\"Maryland Democrat withdraws from Senate race for Sen. Ben Cardin's replacement.\">fundraising efforts fell short<\/a>, bringing in only $214,159, \u200dmost of\u200b which was spent. Trone \u2063managed to raise \u200da little over $63,000.<\/p>\n<p>Jawando did not reveal\u2064 his endorsement \u200bduring his announcement, but Trone has garnered support from local lawmakers such as Ben McShane, a Frederick alderman, and Bob Flanigan, the mayor of Frostburg, Maryland.\u200d On the other hand, Alsobrooks has secured backing from prominent Congressional members, including Sen. Chris\u200d Van Hollen (D-MD), Sen. Raphael \u2063Warnock (D-GA), Reps. Steny Hoyer\u2063 (D-MD), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), and Sen. Kweisi\u200b Mfume (D-MD).<\/p>\n<p>While Maryland is considered a\u2062 safe Democratic state, open Senate \u2064seats\u2062 are rare. In the past 70 \u200dyears, there have only been three. His extensive experience in\u2062 public service and his strong\u200b progressive \u2064platform made\u200b him a popular choice among Democratic voters in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>However, Jawando&#8217;s decision also \u2064reflects \u200cthe challenges of running a statewide \u200bcampaign, especially in a highly competitive race. With\u200d several well-known and well-funded candidates in the mix, Jawando faced an uphill battle to secure the Democratic nomination.<\/p>\n<p>His withdrawal now narrows the field to a two-person race between \u2063former \u2062Democratic Party \u2063Chairwoman Maya Rockeymoore Cummings and\u200c former Prince George&#8217;s County Executive Rushern Baker.
