The CPJ called the accusations &#8220;spurious,&#8221; demanding that the Russian authorities drop all the \u2062charges and release her immediately.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Tatar-Inform agency posted\u200b video, which showed\u2062 Kurmasheva being marched into an administrative\u200c building accompanied by four men, two of whom held her \u200carms and wore balaclavas.<\/p>\n<p>Tatar-Inform said authorities accused Kurmasheva of collecting information about Russia&#8217;s\u2062 military activities &#8220;in order\u200d to transmit information to foreign sources,&#8221; suggesting she received information about university teachers \u200dwho were mobilized into the Russian army.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee to Protect \u2063Journalists said she was charged with failing to register as a &#8220;foreign agent&#8221; in her capacity\u2064 as a person collecting information on Russian military activities. She was waiting for her passports to be returned when the new charge of\u2062 failing to register \u2064as a foreign agent was \u2063announced Wednesday, RFE\/RL said.<\/p>\n<p>RFE\/RL was told to register by \u200dRussian authorities\u2063 as a foreign agent in December 2017.\u2064 It brought a case against Russia at the European Court \u200dof Human \u200dRights in 2021, \u200dchallenging Russia&#8217;s use of foreign agent laws that resulted in the organization being fined millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Kurmasheva reported on ethnic minority communities in Tatarstan \u2064and Bashkortostan in\u2063 Russia, including projects to protect and preserve the Tatar language and culture despite &#8220;increased pressure&#8221; on\u2064 Tatars from Russian authorities, \u200cher employer said.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips after U.S.-Russian\u2062 tensions soared when Russia\u200c sent \u200dtroops\u200c into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/u-s-army-cant-keep-munitions-production-arms-ammo-pour-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>.
