Countless universities have seemingly haphazardly jumped from one conference to\u2064 another, all in pursuit of increased television revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the troubling thing for the fan bases because it should\u2063 be about the student-athletes and the fans, but\u2063 this has nothing\u2063 to do with\u200c the student-athletes and the\u200c fans,\u201d ESPN and Pac-12 Network play-by-play man Roxy Bernstein told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>USC and UCLA, the Los Angeles-based flagship \u200cPac-12\u2064 members for\u2062 as long as anyone \u2064can remember, set the conference\u2019s demise in motion in June 2022 \u200dwhen they\u2062 announced plans to \u200cbolt \u2064for \u2062the Big Ten. And then\u2062 in a span of just more than a week in July and August of this\u2064 year, Oregon and Washington\u200d also joined the Big Ten, while Arizona,\u2063 Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah jumped to the\u2062 Big 12.<\/p>\n<p>After weeks\u200d of uncertainty, California and Stanford gained\u2064 acceptance from the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sept. 1, with\u2062 all the new conference affiliations set to take effect next year. All of that will leave Oregon State and Washington\u200c State to \u200dpresumably turn \u2063out\u200b the lights, and perhaps somehow salvage the Pac-12 brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly sad,\u201d former \u2063Washington \u2062All-American and Pro Bowl tackle Lincoln Kennedy told The Epoch Times. \u200d\u201cThink about all the history. The conference is known as the Conference of Champions for all the national championships it has won. All that is gone. It\u2019s like you\u2019re throwing away the history \u200bbooks and starting all over. And you know that we as a country, if it\u2019s out of sight, it\u2019s \u200cout of mind. (Matthew Stockman\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>If so, there is at least\u200c one more\u200d chapter to be written before\u200b the book is subjected to dusty library shelves.<\/p>\n<p>USC, \u2064which suffered its first loss of the season, 48-20\u200c last week at Notre Dame, and Washington \u200bare unbeaten in conference\u200d play. \u200cOregon \u2064State, Oregon, and \u2063Utah have just one Pac-12 loss apiece, \u2063and those \u2062five schools have combined\u200d for a\u200d 28-4 overall record. All are ranked among the \u2063top 18 \u2062teams in \u2064this week\u2019s Associated\u2063 Press Top 25, while UCLA checks in at No. 25.<\/p>\n<p>Even the bottom \u2062half of the league is commanding attention. Former\u200d NFL star Deion Sanders has remade the previously \u200bmoribund Colorado program in his first season as coach, while\u200b Stanford, a seeming also-ran, overcame a 29-0\u2062 halftime deficit \u2063to \u2062stun the Buffaloes, 46-43 in double overtime, last week in Boulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you \u200clook at\u200c the depth and the balance in this\u2064 conference, it\u2019s hands-down the best league in the country. Another is the\u200c transfer portal, which has enabled \u200cstudent-athletes who might have been buried on depth\u200d charts elsewhere to switch schools without having to miss a\u2063 season of\u2063 playing time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a level \u200cof criticism about not seeing a lot of\u200d Pac-12 guys in the NFL draft last year,\u201d Mr. Burton told The Epoch\u2063 Times. \u201cThat really came from people who don\u2019t know \u200bfootball,\u2064 who didn\u2019t pay attention \u200cto the fact\u2062 that\u200b happened because so many of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pacific-12-putting-on-quite-a-show-in-its-football-farewell\/\" title=\"Pac-12's Football Farewell: A Spectacular Show\">high-level marquee players decided<\/a> to come back this year. I really think that is \u200da \u2063tribute to the great \u200dcoaches we have, \u2064and the \u2063programs and environments they\u2019re creating. Obviously, experience and all \u2062those\u2064 things\u200d matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Mr. Burton remains \u201cin denial\u201d about the extinction of the Pac-12, Mr. Roth \u2063isn\u2019t convinced that there might not \u200byet be a happy ending, albeit probably not any too soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery\u2062 campus I\u2019ve been on, which has\u200d been pretty \u200bmuch every one since everything kind of shook out,\u200c there\u2019s almost like an expectation that things are going to\u200c shift\u200b again in college football,\u201d said Mr. Roth, a former\u2064 wide receiver at the\u2064 University of Pittsburgh and assistant coach at \u200cUSC. \u201cSo, hopefully we\u2063 get to see the formation of something along the lines of a West Coast league in the next five years or so.
