The FDA submitted the\u200d final rule for regulatory review to the\u2062 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on Friday. This rule aims to prohibit the use of \u2063menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes and also includes a ban on flavored cigars.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA has been advocating for \u2062this ban for some time now, \u2062with the goal of preventing youth \u2062initiation\u200b and reducing tobacco-related diseases and \u2064deaths. Menthol cigarettes and flavored \u2064cigars\u2064 have become popular among young people due to their minty taste and aroma, which helps reduce the harshness of smoking. After Canada stopped \u2063selling menthol cigarettes in 2017, the country saw an increase in quit attempts and \u200dcessation among people who smoked menthol \u200dcigarettes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Campaign for\u2062 Tobacco-Free Kids also \u200csupports the FDA&#8217;s proposal, urging \u200cthe OMB and the White House to expedite the\u200b review process and issue final regulations by the end \u2064of the year. They \u2062highlight the lifesaving benefits of these rules.<\/p>\n<p>Tobacco\u2063 is\u2062 the leading \u2062cause of preventable death in the United States, and the availability of cheap, flavored cigars in kid-friendly flavors has contributed to their popularity among young people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cThese\u2062 flavored products have flooded the market in recent years and fueled the popularity of cigars with kids.\u201d According to the 2022 National \u200bYouth Tobacco \u2062Survey, cigars \u200dare the second most popular tobacco product among American high school students. <\/p>\n<h2>Crackdown on E-Cigarettes<\/h2>\n<p> However, there are some who oppose the ban.\u2063 The Tax Foundation warned that the federal menthol ban could result in losses for local governments due to \u2064high taxation and\u2063 the market share of flavored cigarettes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Disposable \u2064vaping e-cigarette products are displayed in a convenience store in \u200dEl\u2062 Segundo, California, on June 23, 2022.
