It focused on members of \u2062an Israel Defense Forces reserve unit.<\/p>\n<p>Reporter Ian Pannell interviewed the men, including one \u2064described as a 38-year-old Chicago resident and Israeli reservist who\u2063 left the United States to fly to Israel \u2064immediately after the slaughter in southern Israel last week.<\/p>\n<p>The full six-and-a-half-minute report on Pannell\u2019s time with\u200d the men, conducted amid preparations for a ground assault on Hamas strongholds in Gaza, can be seen below. But the real lesson came at about the five-minute mark.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere are those voices there, across this region and \u200belsewhere, who say the price of military action is too great,\u2064 that too many civilians are now dying,\u201d Pannell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many Palestinians \u2062are already dying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200b question is being treated on some conservative media sites as a kind of \u201cgotcha,\u201d where Pannell himself was espousing the view that Israel was responsible for\u200d the \u200cPalestinian civilian deaths, but given \u2064the context, it appears more likely that Pannell \u2063was posing a question he knew needed\u200b to be answered by the unique voice of an Israeli serviceman.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, \u200dthe Chicago reservist had the kind of\u2063 bracing take Americans\u2064 need to \u2064hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone in our border towns receive a text message from Hamas announcing what time they have to leave their towns by?\u201d he said. \u201cNo, we \u200ddidn\u2019t get those messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s what\u2062 the IDF is doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone \u200dof us\u200d want \u200cto engage \u2064in war.
