That&#8217;s nearly 200 cases where [People&#8217;s Liberation Army] operators have performed reckless maneuvers, or discharged chaff or shot off flares or approach\u2063 too rapidly or\u200b too\u200d close to U.S. aircraft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The number of these incidents over the same period, when expanding the scope to\u2064 include Chinese military risky behavior toward U.S&#8217;s allies aircraft \u200das well,\u2062 increases to 300.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Defense released on Monday\u200c a collection of videos and still images depicting 15 recent instances where\u2062 Chinese pilots had conducted &#8220;coercive and risky&#8221; maneuvers that date back to\u2062 January 2022. In some instances,\u2063 the Chinese pilot can\u200b be seen coming within less than \u200b30 feet from the\u2062 U.S. aircraft.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The department\u200d will continue to \u200draise \u200dawareness about the \u200bdangers of the PLA as coercive and risky operational behavior,&#8221; \u2064Ratner added. &#8220;We will\u200b also\u2063 continue to seek open lines of \u2062military-to-military communication with the PLA at multiple levels, including the senior most level, because we believe these\u200c channels are crucial for preventing competition from inadvertently veering into conflict. Finally, the United States \u200dwill\u200d not be deterred\u2063 or coerced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Adm. John Aquilino, commander of the United States Indo-Pacific Command, said he&#8217;s &#8220;most concerned \u2063about the potential for accidents,&#8221; which &#8220;could lead to miscalculation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ratner also noted that the Chinese \u2064military&#8217;s aggression also extends to the maritime domain in both the East China Sea and South China Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The disclosure of these incidents comes ahead of the military&#8217;s release \u2064of its\u200b congressionally mandated 2023 &#8220;Report on Military and Security Developments\u200d Involving the People\u2019s Republic of China,\u201d \u2062also known\u2062 as the China Military \u200dPower\u200d Report.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ratner said the report will describe the Chinese air force&#8217;s behavior as &#8220;a \u200ccentralized and concerted campaign,&#8221; and he added, &#8220;Let me say that again: a centralized and concerted campaign to perform these risky behaviors in order to coerce a change in lawful \u200bU.S. operational activity and that of U.S. allies and partners.
