Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who is the Democrat candidate, received 212 votes.

Jordan, or any other GOP speaker candidate,‌ could only afford ⁤to lose three Republican votes.

The gut-wrenching vote took place at⁢ noon ‍orally, with each member‍ being called by name. Then, ⁤members stood up or remained ‍in their seats, indicating their preference for the House speaker role.

Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy ‌(R-Calif.),‌ who was⁢ removed from his position as speaker two weeks ago, supported Jordan during the first round of floor voting on Tuesday. McCarthy’s support for Jordan was met with sporadic ⁤cheers from a number of GOP lawmakers⁤ present.

Additionally, during the first ‌round of voting, Representative Steve Scalise (R-La.), also cast his ballot for Jordan, and the Republican Party applauded ⁢him as well. Following last week’s secret vote, Scalise was the presumed GOP nominee over⁢ Jordan. However, he withdrew from the campaign for‌ speaker on Thursday.

McCarthy is not seeking re-election in the future.

The House now remains deadlocked as Jordan failed to secure enough votes to become speaker on the first ballot, and the House has now headed into a recess.

This‌ round of votes ‍marks the 16th time‌ in history that the House has needed multiple ballots to elect a speaker.

This is a developing story. With only 200 votes, Jordan fell short of the 218 necessary to win⁣ the speakership. The Democrat candidate, Hakeem Jeffries, received 212⁣ votes, securing a ‍narrow victory.

This outcome highlights the⁤ lack of unity within the Republican Party. Jordan, a prominent member of the conservative Freedom‍ Caucus, was seen as a ‍strong contender for⁣ the speakership. However, the divided support from fellow Republicans ultimately cost him‌ the position.

The voting process itself was a tense moment, as each member’s preference was announced‌ orally. This allowed for the entire House‌ to ‌witness who supported whom. Kevin McCarthy, the ‍former speaker who was recently removed from his position, openly showed his support for Jordan. This garnered cheers from some ⁤GOP lawmakers present.

Interestingly, ⁤Steve Scalise, who was initially considered the frontrunner among Republicans, cast his vote for Jordan as well. This demonstrated a shift in support within the party, as Scalise had withdrawn from the campaign for speaker just‌ a week prior.

With Jordan’s defeat, the⁣ House now ⁣finds itself in a deadlock. The ⁣search for ‌a new speaker continues, with no clear frontrunner ‌emerging yet. Furthermore, McCarthy’s decision ‍not to seek ‌re-election in the future adds another layer of uncertainty to the Republican Party’s leadership.

This voting outcome raises questions about the future direction of the Republican‌ Party. The lack of consensus and unity among its members may hinder their ability to effectively oppose the Democratic Party’s agenda ‍in the ⁣House. It also calls into⁤ question the party’s ability to rally around a single leader and present a cohesive vision to the American people.

As the House moves forward in its search for a new speaker, it remains to be seen who will ultimately assume this crucial position. Will the Republicans rally behind ⁢a single candidate,‌ or will the divisions within the party continue⁣ to impede their progress? Only time will tell.

U.S. Rep.
