Major outlets are all highlighting an activist judge&#8217;s order that Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump \u2062can exercise his First \u200bAmendment freedoms during his political prosecution by his rival&#8217;s Department of Justice, but only if he stays &#8220;within bounds&#8221; set by the very people working to \u2063destroy him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-292924362\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ef11c67c7d52b072aa21a41f5282f5e5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ef11c67c7d52b072aa21a41f5282f5e5\"><\/div>\n<p>On Monday, federal \u200bJudge \u200bTanya Chutkan <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/16\/left-wing-judge-bans-trump-from-criticizing-corrupt-doj-during-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">barred<\/a> the former president and current candidate from criticizing the special counsel who is running a politicized prosecution against him. Since Chutkan \u2014 \u2063who has made no secret of her prejudice \u2062against Trump and his voters \u2014 didn&#8217;t step off the judge&#8217;s dais, take\u2064 off her robe,\u2062 and\u200b hand it to the prosecution, granting every request they threw at the wall to\u2064 silence their defendant, the corporate media responded \u2064in lockstep by championing \u200dChutkan&#8217;s &#8220;narrow&#8221; and &#8220;limited&#8221; order gagging\u2063 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-knows-he-messed-up-on-fracking-at-debate-and-is-now-doing-damage-control-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Knows He Messed Up On Fracking At Debate And Is Now Doing Damage Control | The Daily Wire\">presidential candidate<\/a> from criticizing his prosecutors \u2062on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press made sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-capitol-riot-gag-order-judge-chutkan-b5f59c6688504c952df5f70029228f9e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describe<\/a> the gag order \u2063as &#8220;narrow&#8221; in both the headline and first sentence of its report on\u2064 Monday afternoon, \u2064as did \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/10\/16\/gag-order-trump-jan6-criminal-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Axios<\/a>. The New York Times shilled for Chutkan even harder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/10\/16\/us\/trump-gag-order-election-case-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fawning<\/a> \u200cthat \u200cher &#8220;limited order really sought to thread \u2064the needle on balancing Trump&#8217;s \u2063rights to political speech as a candidate for the country&#8217;s\u200b highest office and her own duties to protect the integrity \u200cof the \u200bcase in \u200dfront of\u200d her.&#8221; <em>She really tried, guys \u2014 The New York Times said so!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/16\/politics\/trump-gag-order-chutkan-hearing\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parroted<\/a> \u2062the prosecutor&#8217;s claim \u2064that Trump&#8217;s criticisms of his prosecution &#8220;warrant a narrow restriction on Trump&#8217;s speech \u200daround the case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2023\/10\/16\/trump-court-hearing-judge-gag-order-jan-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington\u200c Post<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-gag-order-arguments-2020-election-meddling-federal-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/judge-hear-arguments-proposed-trump-gag-order-jan\/story?id=103963458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC<\/a> all chose headlines emphasizing \u200dthat the gag order was &#8220;limited&#8221; to silencing only some of Trump&#8217;s speech.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-35c8f2262d5a706dc084813b54a89824 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-35c8f2262d5a706dc084813b54a89824\"><\/div>\n<p>It was, in\u200c the same sense that any authoritarian&#8217;s restrictions on citizens&#8217; rights are &#8220;limited.&#8221; No despot ever outlaws everything anyone could possibly say. Rather, they dictate what people are and aren&#8217;t allowed to say. No real journalist would draw from such restrictions the takeaway: <em>Look at all the\u200d things you *are* still\u2063 allowed to say! See, the restrictions\u2062 on your\u200c speech are really\u200c quite limited.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If a Third World dictator, after arresting his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-xi-jinping-worried-about-leaving-china-chinese-leader-set-to-meet-president-biden-virtually\/\" title=\"Is Xi Jinping Worried About Leaving China? Chinese Leader Set To Meet President Biden Virtually\">top political opponent<\/a>, barred the defendant from criticizing \u200chis \u2063prosecutors but still allowed him to speak &#8220;freely&#8221; about some other people in government, we&#8217;d hardly praise him for delicately &#8220;threading the needle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eight years into the restless\u2063 effort to smear Trump \u2014 first for supposedly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/spygate-101-a-primer-on-the-russia-collusion-hoaxs-years-long-plot-to-take-down-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stealing<\/a> the 2016 election with Russia, then for &#8220;corruption&#8221; relating to a phone call with\u2063 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, then as an &#8220;election denier&#8221;\u200d (<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/22\/the-election-denier-smear-is-the-dumbest-rhetorical-device-in-modern-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whatever that phrase means<\/a>), and always as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/27\/here-is-everything-democrats-claim-is-a-threat-to-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threat to democracy<\/a>&#8221; \u2014 Chutkan now <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-capitol-riot-gag-order-judge-chutkan-b5f59c6688504c952df5f70029228f9e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a> Trump can&#8217;t speak\u200d out publicly against his prosecutors for fear it would amount to a &#8220;smear campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But thankfully, the media blob reassures us, Trump can still direct criticism elsewhere, like at the \u200doverwhelmingly Democrat residents of D.C. who will make \u200cup\u200c his jury pool, or at \u2062the Biden\u2064 administration and DOJ \u200d&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/10\/16\/gag-order-trump-jan6-criminal-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more generally<\/a>,&#8221; \u200bor probably at a driver who cuts him off on the freeway or at a barista who botches \u2063his coffee \u2064order. It\u200b doesn&#8217;t really matter how many exceptions Chutkan comes up with to her gag order. The speech Trump <em>is<\/em> being\u200d banned from\u2063 is what \u200dmatters, in the same way that you don&#8217;t have real freedom of the press if\u200b you can write scathing critiques of some parts of the government but \u2063not others.
