(Cara Ding\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The primary function of the\u2063 Historical Society is carried out through its museum at 25 East Avenue in the City of Middletown, \u2062according to longtime city historian Peter Laskaris.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200dhouse\u200b was built in 1887\u200c and donated \u2063to the organization in 1940\u2063 by the Van Duzer family.<\/p>\n<p>Among \u200bhistorical documents preserved at\u200c the \u2062museum, Middletown High \u200dSchool yearbooks are the most popular for\u200c visitors, who can view a physical collection that goes back as early as 1921.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 city\u2063 directory \u200ccollection is \u200calso popular, he said,\u200d which covers the years between 1857 and \u200b1974.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to find out who was making soda or what kind of businesses were on North Street in a particular year, this is where you\u2019d \u200cfind the answers,\u201d he told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Museum visitors range from local history buffs\u200c to students, researchers, and \u200cout-of-state travelers who stop by for \u200ca few hours to trace family\u2064 roots.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Gerald Kleiner and Dan Burrows \u200c(R) look at old documents mailed to the Middletown Historical Society in Middletown, N.Y., on Oct. 14, 2023. (Cara Ding\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dan \u200dBurrows, a \u2064society volunteer recently assigned to straighten out museum archives, told The Epoch Times that he judged the value of documents from the perspectives of visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask myself this one question, \u2018Will people want to come \u2063here to look at it?&#8217;\u201d \u200che\u2063 said.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200dmuseum is open to the public every Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Middletown was formed in 1888, about 40 years after the arrival\u2063 of the Erie Railroad, which transformed the previously obscure hamlet into a village and, subsequently, a thriving industrial city.<\/p>\n<p>North Street was developed as a central downtown \u200cstrip\u2062 full of businesses, big and \u200dsmall.<\/p>\n<p>However, the decline of the railroad industry, with the Erie Railroad ceasing \u2064services through Middletown four decades ago, initiated an economic downturn for the city.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, the growth of highways and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/middletown-historical-society-celebrates-100th-anniversary\/\" title=\"Middletown Historical Society Marks 100th Anniversary\">suburban strip malls drew businesses<\/a> away from the once-prosperous downtown, exacerbating the decline.<\/p>\n<p>In the past 10 years or so, with \u200cthe arrival of Heritage Trail and the $10 million \u2063state revitalization grant\u2062 as two main catalysts, downtown Middletown has experienced an economic revival.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How does the Middletown Historical Society support local schools in their history classes and projects?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Oes back to the early 1900s.
