At present, the\u2063 state has 6,945 families, or 23,000 people,\u2063 in its family shelter system. Families\u2062 are being held in hotels, motels, college dormitories, and other impromptu shelters.<\/p>\n<p>A 1983\u2063 state law requires the state to provide shelter for\u2064 all eligible families, \u2062but Healey \u200csaid the state will roll out a wait list once it hits 7,500 families. \u2063The\u200d move will put the\u2063 Massachusetts government\u200c in violation of its own law.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly half of the families are Massachusetts residents and \u2062the other half arrived from the southern border.<\/p>\n<p>At Healey&#8217;s request, a team from the\u2063 federal Department of Homeland Security visited the state late last \u2063week\u2062 to see what the state faced with immigrants arriving daily \u2063from the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHS\u200c is coordinating with the City of Boston and the State of Massachusetts to identify ways we can\u2062 continue to maximize our support \u2062for communities that are\u200d addressing the needs of migrants while enforcing tough consequences against those without a legal basis to remain in the country,&#8221; a\u2062 DHS spokesperson wrote in an email on Oct. 9, ahead of \u2063the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Healey and Representative Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) called on President Joe Biden to help the state\u2062 in mid-September. Massachusetts became the latest in August to declare a state \u200bof emergency over its inability\u200b to handle thousands of illegal immigrants \u2062who have arrived after being released from\u200c federal custody \u2062at the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need\u200d the\u2063 Biden \u2062administration to \u200ccompensate for the\u200c tremendous \u200dcost of sheltering the\u2062 migrants,&#8221; Auchincloss said last month.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration touted\u200b $2.8 million in\u200d aid that the government has provided to \u2064Boston since October 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts House Speaker Ron Mariano, a Democrat, told WCVB on \u200cSunday that the $250 million Healey had requested would not\u200d get the state through the end of the month, much less past then.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s\u200b not going to solve the problem. \u2064It may not even get us to the end of the month,&#8221; Mariano said before he knocked Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Calvary isn&#8217;t on the \u200cother\u200b side of the\u200b hill,&#8221; Mariano said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a rudderless ship that \u2064controls the spigot for the help that \u200cwe need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Healey\u200d spoke out in August\u2063 and said\u200b the problem was\u2063 not one for local or state governments to carry\u2064 but for the federal\u200b government.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts&#8217;s 7 million\u2062 residents join other localities, including New York City, Chicago, and Washington, that have\u200c grappled to respond to the number of immigrants released\u2062 into\u200d their communities from the border \u2063under Biden. All are sanctuary zones that \u200chave refused to cooperate with the federal government&#8217;s immigration policies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the state&#8217;s top court ruled that court officers \u2064do not have the authority to arrest or hold an illegal immigrant solely because \u2063he or she was named in a federal immigration request, effectively making the state a &#8220;sanctuary&#8221; zone \u2064that would not turn over people with\u2063 criminal histories, but release them into the community.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u2062 then, \u200dMassachusetts has rolled out initiatives to help immigrants who are awaiting asylum and deportation proceedings years down the road live normal\u200c lives while in \u2062the country. Just\u200d last month, the state began allowing any noncitizen\u200c residing in \u2062the state to obtain a noncommercial driver&#8217;s license.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal immigrants are also eligible for state assistance programs\u200b that cover the cost of food, as well as receive select healthcare coverage\u200d through the state&#8217;s MassHealth Limited plan and financial assistance to pay rent through \u200cthe Residential Assistance for\u200d Families in Transition, Emergency Rental and Mortgage Assistance Program, and Emergency\u200d Rental Assistance\u2062 Program, according to the state&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How has Massachusetts responded \u2062to the increasing number of immigrants in need of \u2062shelter, and \u200cwhat are the challenges the state\u200c is facing in accommodating them?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Hat the state is &#8220;running out of resources&#8221; to\u200c provide\u2064 shelter for immigrants in need.\u200d He emphasized the need \u200dfor federal assistance to alleviate the strain on\u2062 the state&#8217;s shelter system.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-visits-wounded-warriors-at-walter-reed-hospital\/\" title=\"Biden Visits Wounded Warriors At Walter Reed Hospital\">sparked mixed reactions<\/a> across\u200c the state.
