They were once\u200c seen as sure bets for the speaker&#8217;s position, only to be dethroned at the \u2063last moment. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) remains as one of the few remaining pillars \u200dof \u2062GOP establishment power.<\/p>\n<p>However, the election of the first \u2062Freedom Caucus speaker will be a \u2063crucial test for conservative rebels. McCarthy&#8217;s path to becoming speaker\u2063 took 15 ballots, and just nine months later, he was ousted\u2064 despite having the support of over 90% of the House Republican Conference, including Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>Since McCarthy&#8217;s removal, the House has been \u200bwithout a speaker for nearly two weeks, with pressing \u2063issues such as the \u200dconflict in \u200dIsrael, President Joe Biden&#8217;s request for\u2062 aid\u2064 to Ukraine, and \u2062the looming threat of a government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>For conservatives like \u2063Jordan, this is not about legislative nihilism but about keeping\u200b promises. Wade, \u200bor\u2064 they remain unaccomplished.<\/p>\n<p>Republican primary voters have increasingly shown a preference\u200c for \u2064combative candidates, a trend\u200b that \u2063began with the Tea \u2063Party movement under\u200d former President Barack\u2064 Obama and culminated in former President Donald Trump&#8217;s victory over more conventional Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>This desire for\u200c less conventional leaders has also spilled over into congressional\u200d leadership battles.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, this trend emerged in congressional politics before it became evident in the Republican presidential primaries. Newt\u2063 Gingrich replaced Bob Michel as the\u2062 top Republican in the House after leading conservative opposition to\u200b George H.W. Bush&#8217;s tax increase. Shortly after becoming the first GOP speaker in 40 years, Gingrich faced his\u200b own conservative rebellions.<\/p>\n<p>Former House\u200d Speaker Paul Ryan was initially beloved by \u2063the conservative movement but, like McConnell, he was \u2062not as connected to conservative activists and followed the traditional path to leadership.<\/p>\n<p>If elected, Jordan would be a conservative speaker who rose through the ranks \u2064within conservative activist circles and understands their \u2064passions. He could potentially be an even more\u200d dedicated speaker \u200bfor them than Gingrich.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy was believed\u200b to owe his speakership\u200b to hard-line conservatives within the \u2064House GOP.
