Jim Jordan Makes Progress \u2063in \u200bHouse\u200d Speaker Bid<\/h2>\n<p>According to a GOP source familiar with his whip efforts, Rep. \u2063Jim\u2063 Jordan (R-OH) has successfully reduced the number of opponents to his House speaker bid to\u2063 less than a \u2063dozen. This significant progress demonstrates Jordan&#8217;s \u2062ability to \u2064garner support from members\u200d of\u2063 his\u2063 conference, despite 55 of them stating on Friday that they would \u200cnot vote for him on the House floor after he secured his party&#8217;s internal nomination.<\/p>\n<p>A floor vote is scheduled for Tuesday, and Jordan has \u2064boldly declared\u2063 that he\u2062 will proceed to the floor that day, even without having secured\u2064 the necessary 217 votes. To further build on \u2062this momentum, Jordan\u2064 circulated a \u200d&#8221;Dear Colleague&#8221; letter on Monday morning, addressing concerns about the unexpected and chaotic \u200dchain of events leading up to his nomination.<\/p>\n<p>These events included eight Republicans voting alongside Democrats\u2062 to remove former Speaker \u200dKevin McCarthy (R-CA), and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) securing the internal nomination, only to face opposition from hard-liners who refused to support the new \u200bnominee.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve discussed frustrations about\u2064 the treatment of Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise \u200band the events of\u200b the past month,&#8221; \u2064Jordan \u200bwrote. &#8220;In these conversations, we&#8217;ve also discussed your thoughts on how we can best\u200b move \u2063forward. And we\u2062 must \u2063move \u200cforward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jordan \u200cexperienced a breakthrough on Monday with \u200bsome of his toughest\u2062 critics, who had previously stated their refusal to vote for him on the floor. House\u200c Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL), who supports funding Ukraine unlike Jordan, announced his support after engaging in productive conversations with \u200cthe\u2064 Ohio Republican. Similarly,\u2062 Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), a\u200b top appropriator responsible\u2063 for defense \u2064funding, and \u2064Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO), a staunch Scalise ally, both\u2063 revealed their \u2064decision to support Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is\u2062 still confusion surrounding\u200d the exact\u2062 number \u2064and identities of members who\u200c oppose Jordan. \u200bRep. Chip\u2062 Roy (R-TX), a strong supporter of Jordan, stated on a\u200b radio show that while he doesn&#8217;t have an exact count, he believes\u200d the \u200dnumber of holdouts is &#8220;somewhere\u200c south of\u200d 10.&#8221; Other\u2062 GOP\u200c members shared similar sentiments, estimating the number of hard &#8220;no&#8217;s&#8221; to be around seven or\u200c nine.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the exact count, any number exceeding four members against Jordan could jeopardize\u2063 his\u200c chances. This is why Jordan&#8217;s team is determined \u2064to \u2064take the vote\u2064 to\u2063 the floor, even\u200c without the necessary 217 votes, \u200cin order to identify and \u2062court potential \u2063supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR), a senior\u2062 appropriator, expressed doubt that anyone in the Republican conference could currently \u2063secure 217 votes. He suggested that \u200bif this becomes apparent, bipartisan collaboration may be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>While \u2062Womack did not disclose his\u200b own voting intentions for Tuesday&#8217;s floor vote,\u200c he acknowledged\u200c that many appropriators are\u200c concerned about the prospect of Jordan becoming \u200bspeaker.
