Two facts underscore <em>why<\/em> the move was so\u200c concerning, \u200dhowever.<\/p>\n<p>First, Saudi-Israeli normalization would\u200c have continued the momentum\u200c of the Abraham \u200cAccords \u2014 the\u200c series \u200cof groundbreaking deals that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states \u2014 and isolated the belligerent government\u2064 in Tehran, creating a bloc of\u2062 nations that included Israel which prioritized\u2064 security and safety. A decade ago, such a deal between the\u2062 Jewish state and other regional powers would have been considered unheard of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormalization was already considered \u200btaboo (in the Arab world) \u2026 this war only amplifies that,\u201d said Aziz Alghashian, a \u200bSaudi analyst quoted by \u200cReuters.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, yet again, the Biden administration seems to\u200c have been embarrassed by the Saudis. Biden had promised\u2064 to\u200b treat the nation as a\u2063 pariah on the campaign trail for the \u200bmurder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi but was instead willing to \u200cgo to Saudi Arabia, greet MBS with a fist bump and\u200c basically \u200bbeg for increased \u2064oil production he didn\u2019t get.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">U.S.\u200b President \u200cJoe Biden greets Saudi Crown\u200d Prince Mohammed\u200b bin \u2062Salman with a fist bump. A \u2062U.S. source familiar with the issue confirmed this,\u201d the wire service reported.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Saudi government simply\u2064 said after the call\u2063 that it stood \u2064in \u201copposition to any form of \u2064civilian targeting and the loss of innocent lives\u201d and\u200d emphasized the Saudis\u2019 \u201cunwavering stance in standing up for the Palestinian cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second problem is the priorities of the two \u200cstates \u2014 and why Saudi \u200cArabia turning to\u200c Iran indicates deeper issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Saudis are\u2064 still \u2063convinced\u200b the region, and \u200cSaudi Arabia itself, needs to shift\u2062 toward regional \u2064cooperation and economic development. Iran seems to think the priority is\u200b to take \u200cthe fight to the Israelis first,\u201d said \u200dAlex Vatanka, director of the Iran Program at the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Vatanka\u2019s analysis, Reuters \u200creported, showed how \u2064the visions for the region\u200d \u201cdiverged,\u201d as if there might \u200cbe some difficulty in\u2062 reconciling \u200cthem. That\u2019s \u200ba profoundly charitable reading.<\/p>\n<p>By the time the call was made, after all, numerous \u2064reports indicated the Iranians both trained the forces that pulled off last \u200cweekend\u2019s attack but gave the \u200bblessing for it\u2064 to go ahead. Not Washington, but Tehran \u2014 typically one of\u2064 Saudi Arabia\u2019s \u2064foremost geopolitical adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Saud isn\u2019t blind.
