However, it is widely known that Iran financially supports Palestinian terror groups, including Hamas.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>U.S. Secretary of\u2063 State\u200d Antony Blinken has also dismissed claims that the $6 billion in unfrozen funds directly supported Hamas, stating that none of the funds have been withdrawn from the Iranian side. The Biden administration granted \u200bclemency to\u2063 five Iranian nationals\u200d in exchange for the release of five U.S. citizens\u2064 held in Iran, as well as the transfer of the frozen funds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>During a White House press briefing, National Security Counsel spokesman John Kirby confirmed that \u2063the $6 billion in funds are still \u2063in\u200d the transfer process and remain in a bank account controlled by the government of Qatar.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Despite the assurances from Biden administration officials,\u2063 lawmakers\u2062 from both parties are calling for executive action to refreeze the funds. Rep. Pfluger \u2062has drafted his \u200cown bill, H.R. 5947, to freeze the funds through legislation.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This $6 billion will be used to\u2064 backfill the money that Iran is paying to Hamas if we don&#8217;t act,&#8221; warned Mr. Pfluger. &#8220;The Administration&#8217;s supposed &#8216;quiet understanding&#8217; with Qatar, also a\u2064 host country of Hamas, is a disaster waiting to happen. Since\u200b the Administration refuses\u200c to permanently freeze the\u2064 funds, \u200cCongress will.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Among the 106 original cosponsors of the bill is Republican Study Committee \u2064Chairman Kevin Hern (R-Okla.).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Biden Administration first downplayed Iran&#8217;s role in Hamas&#8217; attacks \u2064and then, astonishingly, tried to claim the $6 billion they gave to Iran has nothing to do with it,&#8221; said Mr. Hern. &#8220;Appeasing Iran does not work, it\u200b just gives them more resources to finance terrorism against Israel and\u200c cause chaos in the region. Iran provides over $100\u200b million a year to Hamas; \u2064the Biden administration just gave $6 billion to Hamas&#8217;\u200d biggest backer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>During his \u2062White House\u200d press briefing, Mr. Kirby reiterated the Biden administration&#8217;s assurances that the $6 billion in unfrozen Iranian funds can only be used for limited humanitarian purposes and that the Qatari bank account was established\u2064 with oversight features by \u2064the Trump administration. However, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has cast doubt on\u2062 these humanitarian assurances, stating that Iran will \u200bhave the final \u2063say on how the funds\u200c are used.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.), another prominent co-sponsor of Mr. Pfluger&#8217;s bill, highlighted President Raisi&#8217;s comments and led a bipartisan group of \u2062lawmakers in a letter urging President Biden to refreeze the \u2063funds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi put it plainly that \u2062the funds would be\u200c used &#8216;wherever we \u2064need it,'&#8221; the bipartisan letter states. &#8220;Iran&#8217;s &#8216;need&#8217; is Israel&#8217;s destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>However, the bill and other House bills face challenges without a House \u200bspeaker to set the legislative agenda. Last week, Rep. It would also require the Biden administration to provide evidence of Iranian involvement in\u2064 terrorist activities before any funds are released.<\/p>\n<p>Support for the bill has been strong among Republicans, with many arguing that the release of funds to \u2062Iran undermines U.S. national\u2062 security and puts\u200d American allies, particularly Israel, at risk.
