(Patricia Tolson\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A forensic accounting firm reported that Ms. Arneson \u2062diverted $1,551,148.87 into \u200cthe account between Jan. 30, 2020, and Feb. 9, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Tippin said the investigation cost Hernando County taxpayers $15,143.40.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Lewis played the video from an April 13, 2020, report \u200cby local news station WFLA after \u2064an Easter weekend burglary saw \u206490 percent of the shelter&#8217;s supplies stolen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes somebody who\u2019s heartless to take from somebody who\u2019s voiceless,\u201d Ms. Arneson said of the robbery.<\/p>\n<p>By this time, Mr. Tippin said Ms. Arneson had already \u2064stolen &#8220;around $330,000&#8221; from\u2064 the shelter.<\/p>\n<p>During cross-examination, Ms. Arneson&#8217;s defense attorney, State Attorney \u200cOmar Abdelghany, noted that an estimated $400,00 in cash and property had been recovered and that Ms. Arneson &#8220;cooperated fully.&#8221; Mr. Tippin confirmed this to be true.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:238px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Lisa Judge,\u200c vice president \u2064of the board of directors for the Humane Society \u200dof the Nature Coast waits to\u2064 hear \u200dthe sentencing&#8217;s\u2063 outcome in Brooksville, Fla., on Oct. 12, 2023. (Patricia\u2063 Tolson\/The\u2062 Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lisa Judge, the vice president of the HSNC, testified that Ms. Arneson&#8217;s theft damaged \u2063the shelter&#8217;s standing in the community and nearly caused the shelter to close.<\/p>\n<p>Reading from\u2064 a prepared statement, \u200cMs. Judge told the court that the HSNC relies\u200d solely on community \u200dsupport\u2064 and it would &#8220;take years&#8221; to \u200brecoup their\u2064 losses.<\/p>\n<p>She showed the court photos of &#8220;the true\u2063 victims&#8221; of Ms. Arneson&#8217;s crime, abandoned\u200d and \u200dabused \u200banimals who could have benefitted from the money she stole.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>She\u200b asked that \u200cMs. Arneson &#8220;receive the highest sentence\u2063 allowed in addition to never working or volunteering for \u200canother non-profit again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The Defense<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Donald McMurray, \u2062a \u200cpsychologist obtained by the defense who evaluated Ms. Arneson, testified that the defendant had suffered from extreme anxiety, depression, and an obsessive-compulsive disorder since childhood. He said. Ms. Arneson had told him she had\u200d been undergoing treatment for these disorders for at\u2062 least four \u200byears before her arrest. He diagnosed Ms. Arneson with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/schizoaffective-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schizoaffective disorder<\/a> of the bipolar type. Symptoms include\u2064 hallucinations, \u2062delusions, and major depression.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. McMurray \u200balso determined that,\u200b because this was Ms. Arneson&#8217;s first crime, there was\u2062 little chance she would repeat the offense.<\/p>\n<p>During cross-examination, Mr. McMurray admitted that, other than her word,\u200d there\u2062 was no\u200b evidence to prove Ms. Arneson had been receiving treatment for four\u200d years.<\/p>\n<p>Before rendering his\u2063 sentence, Judge\u2064 Daniel \u200cMerritt, Jr., of the Fifth Circuit Court of Florida, permitted Ms. Arneson \u2063to read a prepared statement.<\/p>\n<p>She tearfully expressed remorse, saying she initially began stealing the money to \u2063keep up with her millionaire ex-husband and \u2063to win sole custody of their children. The &#8220;fast money and lifestyle&#8221; became an addiction she &#8220;couldn&#8217;t stop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She pleaded with the \u200ccourt to allow her to serve her sentence through probation so she could go home \u2062to\u2064 her two children, get her &#8220;vet tech certification,&#8221; and attempt to &#8220;pay back&#8221; the money she stole.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Merritt ultimately sentenced Ms. Arneson to 7.5 years in the\u200d Florida Department \u200dof Corrections with 611 days of credit for time served.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>As \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/us\/operation-heartless-ex-humane-society-director-arrested-for-stealing-1-5-million-from-shelter-4270141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously reported<\/a> by The Epoch Times, Ms. Arneson paid $220,000 in cash for a brand new\u2062 home \u2063less than a mile from the shelter just five days after the Easter burglary.
