Many nonbelievers simply will not understand, and we know how people sometimes respond when they do not understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen He walked through the streets of Jerusalem carrying His cross, this was not Jesus in His \u200dglory. This was \u200dnot Jesus in His power,\u201d Schmitz\u200c said in his homily. \u2063\u201cWhen \u200dGod was \u2063in the process of saving the \u2063world, most people didn\u2019t even know \u2064what was going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of them spat upon him \u200dand abused him as\u2063 God\u2063 was in the process of saving the world \u2014 as God\u2064 was in the process of pouring\u2063 himself out and love for us,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I \u2062think of a Eucharistic \u2062procession \u2026 I want them to know this is Jesus. I want them to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, some New Yorkers not only understood but \u2062showed \u200ctheir understanding in powerful ways.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Catholic News Agency, \u201csome bystanders looked on with interest and\u2063 others dropped to their knees\u201d when they saw the procession.<\/p>\n<p>CNA described Schmitz\u2063 as\u2064 both \u201ca \u200dpriest of the Diocese \u200bof Duluth\u201d and \u201ca popular Catholic\u200d speaker and podcaster.\u201d His sermon, therefore,\u2064 attracted great interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have hearts that are a mess. And we\u200d need Jesus,\u201d Schmitz said in his\u2064 homily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have the kinds\u2062 of hearts that can love him\u2064 the way he deserves \u2026 \u2064every one of us is\u2062 a sinner,\u200d and we need Jesus to rescue us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CNA story featured photos of the procession, the faithful and \u2014 in \u200cone inspiring image \u2014 an elderly bystander on his knees.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A \u2063procession \u200bbringing Jesus in the Eucharist\u200c through the heart of the largest city in the \u200cU.S. attracted hundreds of participants on Tuesday evening. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jg4db2lIRo\">https:\/\/t.co\/jg4db2lIRo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Catholic News Agency (@cnalive) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cnalive\/status\/1712159888061698431?\">October 11, \u200b2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Schmitz told worshipers that he \u2063wanted them to treat \u2063the\u2062 procession as \u200can act of communion with God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet this procession be\u2063 your choice\u2062 to say, \u2018God, I want you to recognize me in \u200cyour glory. So I\u2019m going to cling to you when you\u2019re hidden \u2026 I \u2064want to be known as your friend when you come in triumph. So let me be your friend now,\u2019\u201d Schmitz said.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, thousands of Christians showed courage worthy \u200dof Proverbs.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2063 displaying that courage, they also made a humble appeal in the spirit of Schmitz\u2019s homily.<\/p>\n<p>We want to love Jesus, Schmitz \u200csaid,\u2062 but we lack \u201cthe kind of hearts that can love him the way he deserves.\u201d Our own hearts \u200bremain drenched in sin.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, a Eucharistic procession through the streets of New York amounts to a collective acknowledgment of\u2064 our fallen nature. But it also reminds us that we have the very\u2064 help we need. And we have it from only \u2064one source.<\/p>\n<p>In Book 2,\u2063 Chapter 4, of\u2064 \u201cMere Christianity\u201d \u2014 a chapter titled\u2062 \u201cThe Perfect Penitent\u201d \u2014 \u2062legendary Christian author C.S. Nothing \u200bin God\u2019s nature corresponds to this process\u2063 at all,\u201d Lewis\u2063 wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut supposing God became\u2062 a man\u2009\u2013\u2009suppose our human\u200d nature which \u2062can\u200b suffer and die was amalgamated with God\u2019s nature in one person\u2009\u2013\u2009then that person could help us,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Therein lay\u2062 the full meaning of Schmitz\u2019s reference to \u200boutsiders\u2019 \u200bviews of the Eucharist procession: \u201cI want them to know this\u200b is Jesus.
