Matt Gaetz of Florida, who launched the chain of events that left the House without\u200c a speaker\u2062 for more than a week, on Thursday posted \u2064comments from former President Donald Trump that criticized former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree \u2063with President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump?\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a>!\u201d the congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repmattgaetz\/status\/1712606687897505841?s=46&#038;t=0bIC1Qg7EYMgdAuOWq8F2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted on \u200dX<\/a> \u2063 along\u200b with a clip\u2064 of Trump speaking on <a href=\"https:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/2023\/10\/12\/former-president-trump-on-israel-speakers-race-nikki-haley-rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox \u2064News Radio<\/a> to host Brian\u200c Kilmeade.<\/p>\n<p>During the clip, \u2063the former president offered his thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lauren-boebert-scolds-childish-republicans-plotting-remove-matt-gaetz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaetz\u2019s decision<\/a> to \u200doppose McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, he was upset that Kevin was doing\u200c a lot \u200bof the Obama work. He\u200d was working \u200don the budget and getting something approved that,\u2062 you know, we could have gotten \u200ba lot for. And the debt ceiling, everybody was hurt with that,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the\u2063 same \u200ctime, Kevin\u2019s \u200da \u2063great guy. He\u2019s\u200d a wonderful guy. And let\u2019s see how \u2014 you can\u2019t really \u2064say what\u2019s going to\u200d happen\u200c until you find\u200b out who\u2019s\u200b picked and how good a job that person does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discussion begins at 17:33 below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>That point was made clear in the case of McCarthy, \u200dwhom Trump pushed GOP\u2064 lawmakers to choose as speaker in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKevin McCarthy will do\u2064 a\u2064 good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB \u2013 JUST WATCH!\u201d he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/109630978268932397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth Social post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, the former\u200c president has backed House Judiciary Committee Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/wrench-thrown-house-speaker-race-divide-grows-scalise-jordan-supporters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Jordan<\/a> \u200dof Ohio for the post.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday night, \u200cHouse Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who a day earlier had received\u200c a majority of votes in the House Republican\u200c Conference to \u200csucceed McCarthy, announced he\u200b would drop his\u200b efforts\u2064 to\u2064 become\u200b speaker, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/10\/12\/steve-scalise-house-speaker-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis country is counting\u200d on us to come back together,\u201d Scalise\u200b said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u2064House of Representatives needs a speaker, and we need to \u2062open up the House again. But clearly, not everybody is there\u2063 and there\u2019s still schisms \u2064that have \u200cto\u200b get resolved,\u201d he \u2063said.<\/p>\n<p>A speaker nominee\u2063 needs 217 votes on the House floor \u2064to be elected. \u2063On Tuesday, Scalise \u200dwon \u2064a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/listen-trump-seems-to-agree-with-gaetz-led-ousting-of-mccarthy\/\" title=\"Trump appears to support Gaetz-led removal of McCarthy.\">secret \u2062ballot vote<\/a> of House Republicans over Jordan\u200c 113-99. However, after the vote, multiple Jordan supporters said they would not get behind Scalise, making it likely that Scalise would fail if a floor vote was \u2062to be held.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/steve-scalise-makes-vow-possible-showdown-jordan-trump-speaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scalise<\/a> did not \u200bsay whom he will support \u200bfor\u2064 the post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sure there will be\u2064 a lot of\u2062 people \u200dthat look at [running], but it\u2019s got to \u2064be people that aren\u2019t \u200cdoing it for themselves and their own personal interests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at where our conference is, there\u2019s still work to be done. Our conference still\u200d has to come together, and it\u2019s not there. On January 3, 2021,\u2064 the 117th Congress was \u200bsworn in,\u200b including the election of \u2063the Speaker \u2064of the House. Nancy Pelosi,\u200c a Democrat, was reelected as Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u2064 On \u2063January 6, 2021, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-targets-trump-supporters-ahead-of-2024-election\/\" title=\"FBI focuses on Trump supporters for 2024 Election.\">violent \u2063mob stormed<\/a> the U.S. \u200cCapitol in \u200dan attempt to disrupt the certification of the Electoral College results of the \u20622020 presidential election.\u2062 This incident forced the House to abruptly recess and evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>3. After the \u2064Capitol was secured, the House reconvened later on January 6 to continue the certification process. However, several Republicans pledged to object to the \u200ccertification of certain state&#8217;s electoral votes, leading to lengthy\u200c debates and delays.<\/p>\n<p>4. On January 10, 2021, Representative Liz Cheney, a Republican, announced\u200d her intention to vote in favor of impeaching then-President \u200bDonald Trump for his role in inciting the\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pelosi-says-impeachment-and-25th-amendment-resolutions-will-be-brought-to-the-house-floor-starting-monday\/\" title=\"Pelosi Says Impeachment and 25th Amendment Resolutions Will Be Brought to the House Floor Starting Monday\">mob attack<\/a> on the Capitol. This caused\u2064 a significant divide within the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u2062 On January 11, 2021, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy met with Trump, where they reportedly discussed the formation of\u2062 a\u2062 new political party, fueling further tension \u2063within the Republican caucus.<\/p>\n<p>6. On January 17, 2021, Speaker Pelosi sent a letter to House \u2062Democrats indicating that the impeachment \u200carticle against Trump would be transmitted to the Senate on January\u200d 25, initiating the trial process. However, she \u2064did not officially \u2063transmit the article immediately.<\/p>\n<p>7. \u200bOn January 21, 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-trump-tweets-out-martial-law-fake-news-knowing-there-are-several-options-on-the-table\/\" title=\"President Trump Tweets Out \u201cMartial Law = Fake News\u201d Knowing There Are Several Options on the Table\">news broke<\/a> that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sought\u200b to delay the start of the Senate impeachment trial until mid-February. This further complicated the timeline for the trial and the role of the Speaker in the process.<\/p>\n<p>8. As a \u200cresult of\u200b these events, Speaker\u200c Pelosi decided to delay the transmission of the \u200bimpeachment article to the Senate until February 2, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>During this period of uncertainty and political division, the House was without a Speaker due to the various controversies, debates, and delays \u200bsurrounding the aftermath of the Capitol attack and \u200cthe impeachment process.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Republican Rep.
