Jim Jordan \u200d(R-Ohio) \u2062on Oct. 11.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$-->\n<\/div>\n<p>A \u200cvote in \u200bthe House was scheduled for\u2062 3 p.m. on\u200b Oct. 11,\u200d less\u2062 than two hours after\u200c the nominating conference.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t \u200dsit well with some Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Even some of Mr. Scalise\u2019s strong supporters were surprised that the nominating conference was adjourned so quickly, short-circuiting any attempt to \u2063bring the group to\u200b unanimity before proceeding \u2063to a floor \u200bvote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I think a lot of people &#8230; \u2064found it odd,\u2064 like, \u2018We&#8217;re \u2064adjourning right now?\u2062 We\u2019re not going to get \u2062to some level of confidence that we are going\u200d out with 217?\u2019\u201d Rep. Warren\u2062 Davidson (R-Ohio) said, referring\u200b to the \u200dminimum number of votes needed to win the\u2064 House election.<\/p>\n<p>Others balked at the timing of the House election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not be voting \u2063for Steve Scalise on the floor this afternoon,\u201d Rep.\u2062 Chip\u2063 Roy (R-Texas) wrote\u2064 on\u200b X on Oct. 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House GOP should not have called a\u200b vote at 3 p.m. after finishing the [nominating] \u2062 vote \u200bat 1:30 p.m. in conference. That is unacceptable and purposeful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 complaints point to a larger, underlying concern of\u200b some Republican \u2063members, especially those newer to Washington, who want\u200c to ensure that\u200b their voices are heard and that \u200ball members have some say in the legislative process.<\/p>\n<p>To them, the hurried pace of the election undermined\u2063 trust in the \u2062process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) said on Oct. 12. &#8220;We had our initial \u200bagreement on how we&#8217;re going to disseminate \u2064power to the body. And it seems like we&#8217;re kind of going backward a little\u2064 bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u2063Jordan has said that he now supports Mr. \u200bScalise and offered\u200c to make his \u200cnomination speech \u2062on \u200cthe House floor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr. Jordan has asked his supporters to switch their allegiance to \u200cMr.\u2064 Scalise, but a number of them have\u200d announced their\u200c intention to\u2064 carry\u2063 the fight to the House floor.<\/p>\n<h2>Urgency to Fill the Chair<\/h2>\n<p>Many \u2064members are\u200c eager to\u2063 elect a speaker quickly and get the House back \u2063to work, casting the stakes in near-apocalyptic \u200dterms.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s \u2064a dangerous\u2063 game that we&#8217;re playing,\u201d\u200d Foreign Affairs \u2062Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said. \u201cIt just\u200b proves \u2062our adversaries right, \u200bthat democracy \u200bdoesn&#8217;t work. Our adversaries \u200bare watching us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Paulina Luna\u2063 (R-Fla.) said, \u201cWe have to find someone to lead the country.\u200d We \u2064have no \u200bspeaker, we have \u2064a war that just broke out\u2064 in the Middle East, we have our \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democratic-leaders-say-freedom-caucus-is-risking-a-government-shutdown\/\" title=\"Democrat leaders warn of government shutdown risk by Freedom Caucus.\">appropriations bills due<\/a> soon, and \u2062we have \u2064a country that is in chaos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Others downplayed the urgency, pointing out\u200d that the president is already\u2064 empowered to deal with emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole universe doesn&#8217;t revolve around this building,\u201d \u2063Rep.\u2062 Chip Roy (R-Texas) said. \u201cIf something happens, we can act.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Rep. Mark Green\u200b (R-Tenn.) said, \u201cThere is $2 billion \u2064worth of stuff sitting in Israel right now. There&#8217;s an aircraft carrier \u200dsitting off the \u2064coast\u200d that the president has the authority to move. The president does not need to come to\u200d us until after 30\u2063 days, according \u2063to the War Powers \u2064Act. There&#8217;s no reason to get\u200b all\u200b panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Other Possibilities<\/h2>\n<p>Some members\u2062 who aren&#8217;t opposed to Mr. Scalise\u2063 believe that he \u2062can&#8217;t get the \u200c217 votes needed\u2064 to win the election.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere are people from \u200call ranges \u200bof ideology across the conference saying, \u2018I can\u2019t yet vote for Steve,\u2019 and some are saying outright, \u2018There\u2019s no way I will,\u201d Mr. Davidson said.<\/p>\n<p>Objections to\u200b Mr. Scalise range from the uncertainty of his \u200chealth, as he&#8217;s currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scalise-struggles-to-win-enough-support-for-speaker-role\/\" title=\"Scalise faces difficulty securing enough backing for Speaker position.\">fighting multiple myeloma<\/a>, to his history in\u200d leadership \u200bduring a\u200d time when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scalise-drops-out-of-race-for-house-speaker-role\/\" title=\"Scalise withdraws from House Speaker race.\">national debt grew rapidly<\/a> to \u200chis having spoken to a white \u200csupremacist\u2063 group in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Scalise has said that he didn&#8217;t know the group\u2019s affiliation before accepting \u200dthe invitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that if it&#8217;s not going to be Steve\u200b Scalise, we need to figure out who \u200cit\u200d is,\u201d Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) said. \u201cAt the \u2063end of the day, I would \u2063be happy\u200b to support Jim Jordan or Steve \u2062Scalise\u2014or maybe there&#8217;s \u200canother\u2062 person\u2014but we \u2063just need \u200cto\u2062 get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several members told The\u200c Epoch Times \u200dthat giving Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry\u200d (R-N.C.) additional powers wasn&#8217;t under consideration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not facilitated in the Constitution,\u201d Rep. \u2062John Duarte\u200d (R-Calif.) said.<\/p>\n<p>Members were\u200d reluctant to predict\u2063 how \u2062long the selection \u200cprocess would \u2064take, but some told The Epoch \u200dTimes that they\u2019re \u200dprepared to remain in Washington \u200bover the weekend, indicating \u200cthat a GOP consensus could be days away.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<em>Ryusuke Abe contributed to this \u2064report. <\/em>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What role\u200b will Rep.
