I just shared with my \u200dcolleagues that I\u2019m withdrawing my \u200bname \u2064as a candidate for speaker-designee,&#8221; Mr. Scalise told reporters on Capitol \u2062Hill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our conference\u2064 still has to come together, and it\u2019s not there,&#8221; he added. &#8220;There are still \u2062some people that have their own \u200dagendas. Ralph\u2062 Norman (R-S.C.) said Mr. \u2064Scalise&#8217;s decision to drop out &#8220;does not surprise me,&#8221; based on &#8220;the \u200dnumber of people since yesterday&#8221; who \u200bsaid they\u200d were a &#8220;hard no&#8221; on his candidacy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Next Best Candidate: Rep. Jim Jordan<\/h2>\n<p>The next \u200bbest candidate, Mr. \u200cNorman said, would be Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/scalise-secures-gop-speaker-nomination-but-unclear-if-he-has-votes-on-floor-5508121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost<\/a> \u200dto Mr. Scalise in a secret ballot by 113\u201398 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr. Jordan had encouraged his supporters to back Mr.\u200c Scalise, but a number of them said they&#8217;d carry the fight\u2062 to the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I voted for [Jordan] in the first round,&#8221; Mr. Norman said, expressing \u200bhis confidence that Mr. Jordan can get the 217 needed to become speaker.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The country loves Jim Jordan,&#8221; he added. &#8220;He&#8217;s a great spokesman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Norman also expressed the urgency of resolving the House leadership problem, citing the conflict in Israel. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want to drag this thing out,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Now it&#8217;s time to\u2063 come to some\u200b conclusion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Scalise tried to win over \u200dholdouts during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ny-gov-cuomo-shunned-experts-embraced-lobbyists-drove-top-health-officials-to-quit-over-pandemic-response-report\/\" title=\"NY Gov. Some also threw their support \u200bbehind Mr.\u200d Jordan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) took to X, formerly Twitter, \u2064to call Mr. Scalise &#8220;an American hero.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;He was almost killed but God kept him here for \u2064a higher purpose. He doesn\u2019t deserve to be treated\u200d this way,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDaveJoyce\/status\/1712623232170238397?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) thanked Mr. Scalise\u200d for his &#8220;diligence \u200band hard work&#8221; and contributions to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Anna Paulina\u200b Luna (R-Fla.) called Mr. Scalise&#8217;s decision a selfless act and urged \u2062her \u200dGOP colleagues to return to Washington\u200b to \u200bresolve the speakership \u2062issue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;Members \u2063of the GOP MUST return to Washington so that we can nominate a \u2064Speaker. In an\u2063 act of statesmanship, Scalise selflessly \u200dhas stepped aside. This needs to happen,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepLuna\/status\/1712622822873321547?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Replying\u2063 to her post, Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) said Republicans &#8220;already did that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;Jim Jordan was a true statesman as well and backed\u200b the nominee, but\u2064 that wasn&#8217;t good enough either,&#8221; Mr. Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMikeCollins\/status\/1712624343656620161?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on X. &#8220;We keep returning to Washington. Being here ain&#8217;t the problem. It&#8217;s egos and TV time. Hell, we can do that from \u2062anywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) described Mr. Scalise as \u201cclassy&#8221; for\u2063 withdrawing his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) said the GOP conference was &#8220;back to square one,&#8221; and predicted that \u2062a speaker wouldn&#8217;t be chosen on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He rejected the idea of giving more power temporarily to Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), \u200dwho serves as House speaker \u200cpro tempore, describing it as a &#8220;quasi-constitutional&#8221; \u200droad that\u200d he doesn&#8217;t want to go down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s get our\u200d act together,&#8221; Mr. Waltz \u2064said. &#8220;We can do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans \u2062are having &#8220;an academic \u2063debate&#8221; about whether supporting Mr.\u2064 Jordan would reward &#8220;the tyranny of \u2062the\u2063 minority&#8221; who \u200bousted former\u2064 speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), according to Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Garcia expressed some doubt\u200b about Mr. Jordan&#8217;s ability to get the numbers he\u200d needs to secure\u200c the role.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we owe it to him. We owe it to \u2062the \u2064party to let that run its course,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I like Jim Jordan. I would support Jim Jordan. I will support\u200b Jim Jordan tomorrow. But\u2062 like I said, he&#8217;s \u2063got a math problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. \u2062Andy Barr (R-Ky.) said Mr. \u200dJordan &#8220;deserves a shot&#8221; \u200bto get the 217 votes he needs while expressing the urgency of resolving the leadership \u2064void.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to\u200d elect a speaker. I supported Steve Scalise, but if Jim Jordan wants \u200cto try to get the 217, I&#8217;m \u200cgoing to support him\u200c because we need\u2064 to\u200b get this process completed and start doing \u200dthe business \u200cof the American people\u200c again,&#8221; Mr. Barr said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) also threw his support behind Mr. Jordan, \u200csaying\u2062 he&#8217;d do an &#8220;excellent job&#8221; as speaker and leading \u200cthe GOP conference. He also expressed his\u2062 openness to other members \u200cidentifying themselves as potential candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The House has been without a\u200d leader for 10 days, with many Republicans expressing \u2063frustration over the delay and urging colleagues to resolve the matter quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Scalise stated on Thursday:\u2063 &#8220;We have to put our agendas on the side and focus on what this \u2063country needs,&#8221; adding, &#8220;This country is\u200d counting on us to come\u2063 back together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This House of Representatives needs a speaker and we need to open up the House \u2063again.
