Reduced leaf surface area: Some desert plants⁤ have small,‌ waxy leaves or no leaves at all ‍to reduce water loss through transpiration.

3. ⁤Deep roots: Plants in dry environments often ⁤have long roots that extend deep into the soil to access water sources.

4. Drought tolerance: Many desert plants have physiological adaptations that allow ⁤them to⁣ withstand extended periods of drought. For example, they may ⁢have mechanisms to close‍ their stomata (tiny openings on the leaf surface) to minimize water loss.

5. Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM):‌ Some plants, like cacti ⁢and succulents, use CAM photosynthesis to reduce water loss by only⁤ opening their stomata at night when temperatures are⁢ cooler.

6. Protective structures: Certain desert plants have physical structures that help them ⁢conserve water, such‍ as ‍spines or⁤ hairs on their leaves that reduce transpiration.

7. Shedding leaves: Some plants in dry environments shed their ⁣leaves during periods ‍of drought ‌to conserve water.

8. Adaptations for pollination and seed dispersal: Desert plants often have⁣ specialized adaptations to attract pollinators and ensure ⁤the dispersal of seeds, such as producing nectar or having seeds with hooks or ‌barbs ‍for‍ attachment to animals.

Overall, these⁣ adaptations and behaviors allow plants to conserve ⁣and efficiently use water, survive drought, and thrive in dry environments.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) withdrew his House speaker bid during a closed-door House Republican conference meeting.
