Kathy Hochul (D-NY), \u200cAttorney General \u2064Letitia James, and\u200b two members of the state legislature.\u200c They \u200care determined to tackle the youth mental health \u2063crisis head-on.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>&#8220;Our kids \u200dare\u200d in crisis, and\u2064 the adults\u2062 in the room need to step up,&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>said Hochul.\u2064 <strong>&#8220;The statistics are extraordinarily disturbing: Teen suicide rates are spiking, and \u200bdiagnoses\u200b of anxiety\u2063 and depression \u200dare surging. It&#8217;s critical we all stand together to address the \u200dyouth mental\u2062 health crisis.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The SAFE Act would impose restrictions\u2063 on\u200d platforms like TikTok&#8217;s &#8220;For You&#8221; page, while leaving chronological feeds, such as the &#8220;Following&#8221; page, unaffected.\u2064 Additionally, parents \u200bor guardians would have\u2064 the power\u2062 to limit teenagers&#8217; screen time and block access \u200dduring specific hours. Non-compliance with\u2064 the \u2064law\u200d could result\u2063 in \u2064fines of up to $6,500 per\u2064 violation.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the officials introduced \u200bthe New York Child Data Protection \u2062Act, \u2062which prohibits the collection of minors&#8217; personal data without consent.<\/p>\n<p>While Meta, the parent company\u200b of TikTok, claims to already provide safety tools,\u200d they acknowledge \u2063the \u200cneed to address\u2063 harmful content. Antigone Davis, Meta&#8217;s head of global safety,\u2064 stated,\u2064 <strong>&#8220;We\u200c refer to research,\u200b feedback from parents, teens,\u200d experts, and academics to inform our approach. And we&#8217;ll continue evaluating proposed legislation and\u200c working with policymakers on developing simple, easy solutions\u200b for parents on these important industrywide \u2064issues.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bill is expected to be presented to the state legislature \u200bin early\u200b 2024.<\/p>\n<p>New York&#8217;s\u2063 initiative follows similar efforts by other states. California passed an Age Appropriate\u200b Design \u200bCode last year, requiring age verification for social \u2063media access. However, the law was\u200d recently blocked in court.
