General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They literally \u200cwant a lawyer to represent \u2063the rights of [the ocean] against human activities,&#8221; Mr. \u200bMorano said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">&#8220;In the case of the oceans, you&#8217;re going to have, essentially, a \u200cmuch harder time doing anything that benefits humans, i.e., fishing, boating,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Any activities in \u2064the ocean will now be evaluated based on the, essentially,\u200b inherent\u200c rights of the ocean\u2014not on whether, \u200cyou know, it&#8217;s going to harm human populations, \u2062not on whether it makes sense to do, whether it can benefit humans. \u200dIt&#8217;s all going\u200d to be on what left-wing \u200cprogressive Marxist activists, \u200dessentially, are going to claim the ocean feels, believes.&#8221;<\/div>\n<h2>Giving Up\u200b National Sovereignty<\/h2>\n<p>The ocean rights movement is relatively new, \u2062but the quasi-religious idea\u200b that the nonhuman parts of the Earth&#8217;s ecological system have inherent legal rights and deserve legal representation has been around among environmental activists for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Morano said environmental activists promote the &#8220;defense of the rights of Mother Earth to &#8216;ensure harmony between humanity \u200dand nature,'&#8221; referring to an agenda\u2064 adopted in \u200b2011 by a working group of the U.N.&#8217;s Framework Convention on\u2064 Climate Change. &#8220;Ultimately, this is them saying,\u200b &#8216;We&#8217;re going \u200bto grant personhood to\u2064 trees, to certain animal species, to bodies of water.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Recognizing that nature has its own entitlements would open courtroom doors to environmentalist attorneys \u2062on behalf of their plant, animal, and water clients,\u2062 according to Mr. Morano.
