However, the question remains: can Scalise \u2064secure the necessary 217 votes to take the gavel?<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-2\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px; text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-2'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>According to\u2064 members\u2063 exiting the \u2064GOP conference meeting, Scalise\u2019s victory against House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan opened the door for floor action as early as Wednesday \u200dafternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Darrell\u200d Issa revealed that\u200d the vote came \u200ddown to 113-99.<\/p>\n<p>The former\u2062 speaker, Kevin McCarthy, would be replaced \u200dby Scalise. McCarthy was shockingly ousted from his job by eight Republicans and House Democrats when Representative Matt Gaetz submitted a petition calling for him to step down as speaker last week.<\/p>\n<p>Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Chip Roy proposed a bill that would have required the\u200d party\u2019s choice of speaker to garner 217\u2062 votes \u200bin \u2064conference before being brought up for a vote on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The attempt to \u200breject such a motion was \u2062shot\u200c down in a 135-88 vote.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the idea said it would prolong\u2063 the election and give any \u2062small number\u2064 of members more \u2062ability to\u2063 make demands, while supporters of the move claimed it would\u2064 prevent the party \u200cfrom repeating the chaotic floor struggle that resulted\u200b in McCarthy\u2019s \u200bJanuary\u2064 election.<\/p>\n<p>Although, on the \u2064floor, that dynamic\u2063 is \u200dstill in play since Scalise needs just\u200b four Republican votes to win the speakership. Max Miller and Lauren Boebert, two Jim Jordan supporters, declared \u200dafter\u2063 the conference\u2063 meeting on Wednesday that\u2062 they still intended to support Jordan in the general election.<\/p>\n<p>From 2014\u200d until his election as majority leader, Scalise, a former chairman of the hardline Republican Study Committee, was the party\u2019s\u2064 whip \u200cin both\u200d the majority and minority.<\/p>\n<p>Scalise\u2019s campaign message for \u2063the race has centered on uniting\u2063 the conference. As primary goals for House Republicans, he also emphasized border security,\u2063 reducing inflation, and better monitoring of the Biden Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in support of Scalise were Reps. \u2062Frank D. Lucas, Ashley Hinson, and John James.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan is supported by numerous Republicans in the conference vote, so now Scalise must secure 217 votes from GOP members.<\/p>\n<p>Scalise will begin his speakership while\u200c receiving\u2064 conditional treatment for\u200c blood cancer, assuming he wins the requisite votes on the floor. Back in April, he revealed \u200bhis illness and stated that he\u2063 would be receiving \u200d\u201cseveral months\u201d of therapy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m working with my doctors and running a\u200b lot of tests. They came back with the \u200ctests.
