That evening, \u2064about 150 Republicans met for an unofficial discussion \u2062of the speaker\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>The two candidates\u2014Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio)\u2014did not address the group, attendees later\u200c told reporters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n    <!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>    <!--\/$-->\n  <\/div>\n<p>Instead, various members aired their views, which included expressions of anger with eight of their number \u2062who, joined by 208 Democrats, voted to oust Mr. McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was anger, but that&#8217;s just what you&#8217;re going to expect,\u201d Rep. Tim Burchett \u2063(R-Tenn.) told\u200d reporters after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Burchett, who is \u200bamong those who voted to vacate the speaker\u2019s chair, \u200bdownplayed the intensity of emotion in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just venting,&#8221; he \u2064said. &#8220;It \u2064wasn&#8217;t overly offensive. I wasn&#8217;t uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tensions in the room were \u2064\u201cmoderate,\u201d according to Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;re not as high, probably, as the American people would expect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u201cWe&#8217;re working through the issues, and we&#8217;re trying to find a palatable candidate\u200d that can help lead the Republican\u200d Party.\u201d<br \/>\n \u2062<\/p>\n<h2>Seeking a Unified\u200c Path<\/h2>\n<p>    Despite the tension, others saw the\u200c meeting as productive in helping Republicans find\u200b a unified path.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMembers had an opportunity to really go home, come back, and process their thoughts a little bit,\u201d said Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it was much more about \u200c\u2018Where do we go from here?\u2019 That was very constructive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Rep. (Erin Scott\/Pool\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Forty-five Republicans sent a letter to their colleagues on\u2062 October 6th, denouncing the faction that opposed\u2063 Mr. McCarthy and declaring that the \u201cinjustice we all witnessed cannot go unaddressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opposing faction\u200b was angered that the former speaker allegedly broke agreements he had made \u200cwith them, and said they did not\u200b believe he would work diligently to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-stagflation-on-the-horizon\/\" title=\"Is Stagflation on the Horizon?\">reduce federal spending<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of Mr. McCarthy believed he had done an excellent job leading the\u200c razor-thin GOP majority and had \u2062produced significant \u200dwins for conservatives.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    Some are seeking rule \u200bchanges to head off further \u200bdisruptions.<\/p>\n<h2>Proposed Rules Changes<\/h2>\n<p>    Prior to their October 11th vote on a speaker nominee, Republicans will \u2063decide on suggested rule changes occasioned by both the ousting of Mr.\u200d McCarthy and his election in January.<br \/>\n \u2062\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>That election, which played out over four days and 15 ballots on the\u200d House floor, showcased the \u2063divisions within\u2062 the Republican conference.<\/p>\n<p>One proposed change would alter a rule that enables a lone member of the House to initiate a vote to vacate the chair, the mechanism that was used to unseat \u2062Mr. McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Although Republicans agreed\u200b to that rule in January, many now \u2064say it too easily\u2063 allows \u2063a small faction to \u2064plunge the House into chaos. They have called for \u201cfundamental changes to the\u200b structure of our majority\u201d \u2063to prevent a\u200b recurrence of that event.<\/p>\n<p>Others\u2062 see this as an important check \u200con the vast power\u200b of the House speaker. Most representatives oppose consolidating more power in \u200cthat office, according to Mr. Donalds, and\u200d would oppose any move in that \u200bdirection.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u200bBurchett favors the rule but believes\u200b it need not be a divisive\u200b issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not a beach I\u2019m going \u200bto die on,\u201d he said. \u201cIf they want to [change] it, they can do it. [But] that\u2019s the rule we agreed \u2063to, and they voted \u200dfor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second proposed change would \u2063require a GOP candidate for speaker to obtain 217 \u200cvotes within the Republican \u200bconference before being placed in nomination to\u200d the full House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>If\u2064 adopted, the GOP majority would conduct the speaker\u2019s election behind closed\u200d doors, making the vote on \u200cthe House floor\u2063 a formality akin to \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pressure-mounts-as-republicans-seek-unity-in-electing-house-speaker\/\" title=\"Republicans face increasing pressure to find unity in electing a new House Speaker.\">counting electoral college ballots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people are pretty weary right now of chaos,\u201d Rep. Kevin\u200d Hern (R-Okla.) told reporters on October 9th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know that it&#8217;s healthy for the American people to see the chaos in the Middle East, chaos in Israel, and then chaos here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holding \u200bthe vote\u2062 in private would keep\u2063 intra-party wrangling from public view, \u200dwhich would be best for the country, according to Mr. Hern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American psyche needs stability,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving\u200d cameras so\u2063 the rest of the\u2064 world sees it [would be] a little destructive right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Donalds favors such\u200b a plan, saying it would benefit whoever becomes \u200bthe next\u2064 speaker.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Rep. (Screenshot via The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u201cI think\u2062 our members want to see \u2064consensus,\u201d Mr. Donalds said. \u201cI think that consensus, especially where we\u2062 are right \u200bnow,\u2064 actually empowers the person who&#8217;s\u200b going to become the next speaker, to go and \u200ddo the work on behalf \u2064of the entire House \u200bof Representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Israel Aid on Hold<\/h2>\n<p>    \u2064    The October 7th surprise attack on Israel by Hamas raises the urgency to elect a speaker because many members are eager to support Israel symbolically \u200cand financially.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Both candidates for speaker have voiced their intention to aid \u200dIsrael.<\/p>\n<p>House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman \u2062Michael McCaul (R-Texas) and Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks (D-N.Y.) on October 10th introduced a bipartisan resolution reaffirming America\u2019s commitment to Israel, supported by 390 House members. Legislation was introduced \u2064to provide \u200b$2 billion to replenish Israel\u2019s Iron Dome\u200d missile defense \u2063system.<\/p>\n<p>Those\u2064 initiatives cannot be enacted without an elected speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Even\u2062 so, some members warn against rushing the choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers do understand the urgency,\u201d Mr. \u2064Donalds said, speaking\u200b of the crisis in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fortunate \u200dthing is that the White House does \u200dhave funds for these types of catastrophic events &#8230; The\u200c House will be ready to answer the bell if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Rep. He urges \u200bhis colleagues \u200cto take an additional week to thoroughly consider \u200ball possible candidates for speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to make sure\u200b we have a body that can operate to \u2063the best of America&#8217;s ability, and that&#8217;s what I am trying to achieve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile being just one of two Jewish [Republicans] in Congress, I care about what&#8217;s going on in Israel &#8230; but\u2063 right now, we have a crisis on \u2064our hands that we also need to get through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Burchett said, \u201cWe\u2019ll have a speaker by Wednesday. And honestly, what is Congress&#8217;s role in the Middle East?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United\u2063 States already provides Israel with $3 billion in aid each year, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans will hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rnc-chairwoman-says-mccarthys-ouster-wont-help-defeat-biden-in-2024\/\" title=\"RNC Chairwoman: McCarthy's Removal Won't Beat Biden in 2024\">speaker candidate forum<\/a> on October 10th. They will reconvene on October 11th \u2063at\u200b 8:30 a.m. for a classified briefing on the war in\u2064 Israel, \u2062then\u200c vote \u2064on rule changes at 10:00 a.m. followed by a vote on their speaker\u200c nominee, said \u2062Mr. Hern.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What \u200dis the significance of the upcoming vote for speaker of the House for the Republican conference<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Ttle bit,\u201d said Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee.\u2063<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously there&#8217;s a lot\u2062 of emotion right\u2062 now. People needed to get some \u2063things off their\u200d chest, and I \u2062think that&#8217;s healthy. \u200bNow, we&#8217;re \u200dlooking\u2063 forward\u200b to trying to continue the \u200dhealing process and \u2063getting\u2064 a leadership team in place that can unify this conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the\u2064 division within the Republican conference, many members are\u2062 hopeful \u2064that a new speaker\u2064 will be \u2063elected soon,\u200c allowing \u2062the \u200dHouse to resume \u2063its legislative duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve got \u2062to get it\u2062 resolved \u2063one way \u2064or another,\u201d\u2063 Rep. Mike\u2063 Simpson (R-Idaho) said. \u201cWe&#8217;ve got \u2064a\u2062 country to run and we need to get\u2063 back \u200dto doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One potential candidate \u2064for speaker, Rep.\u200d Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), has gained support from\u2062 some members\u200d due to her experience and\u200b strong conservative \u2063record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#8217;s a strong leader for the conference,\u201d Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) said of Stefanik. \u201cIf you&#8217;re going to lead, you ought to have a little bit of experience under \u2063your belt, and she \u2062does.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode related-posts\">\n<p>    <!--$--><\/p>\n<p>    <!--\/$--><\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, others believe that the focus \u200cshould be \u2064on selecting a new speaker who can unite the party\u2062 and\u200d effectively lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a \u200dspeaker who\u200b can bring the conference together and help us\u2062 advance our conservative agenda,\u201d Rep.\u2063 Jim Banks (R-Ind.)\u2062 said. \u2062\u201cThat\u200d should be our top priority \u2063right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The upcoming vote for\u200d speaker of the House will be a critical moment for \u2064the \u200dRepublican conference.
