Roy Cooper\u2019s veto of an election law he claimed was a \u201cthreat to democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.ncleg.gov\/CalendarItem\/2023\/H\/0\/2023-10-10\/52744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 749<\/a>, made\u2064 significant changes to the state\u2019s election law by establishing bipartisan election boards, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/4248300-north-carolina-republicans-override-veto-on-election-control-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062bill would take control of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-supreme-court-allows-state-ignore-election-law-count-mail-ballots-received-9-days-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">election<\/a> \u2063boards away\u2063 from the governor\u2019s party and \u200dput them under the control of a group split equally between Democrats and Republicans. This move, Cooper claims, will create gridlock when deciding early-voting locations\u200b and \u200ccertifying results.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-judge-strikes-down-north-carolina-voter-id-okd-by-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North \u200dCarolina<\/a> legislature was able\u200c to override Cooper\u2019s\u2062 veto because they have a three-fifths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-signing-the-covid-19-relief-bill-president-trump-redlines-bill-requesting-an-increase-in-benefits-to-2000-section-230-terminated-or-revised-and-an-investigation-into-voter-fraud-be-performed\/\" title=\"In Signing the COVID-19 Relief Bill, President Trump Redlines Bill Requesting an Increase in Benefits to 00, Section 230 Terminated or Revised and an Investigation Into Voter Fraud Be Performed\">veto-proof majority<\/a> in \u2064the state\u200c capital in\u200d Raleigh.\u2063 The \u200cSenate voted 30-19 \u200bto override Cooper\u2019s veto while\u200c the House vote\u200d came in \u2062at 72-44.<\/p>\n<p>Activists will\u200c likely take\u2064 the bill to\u2064 court to prevent its implementation, The Hill noted.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2063 claims that the bill poses a \u201cthreat\u201d to democracy in the \u200cstate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe legislative takeover \u2063of state and\u2062 local\u200d elections boards could doom our state\u2019s elections to gridlock and \u2062severely limit early voting. \u200cIt also creates a grave risk\u2062 that Republican \u2063legislators or courts would \u2064be empowered to change the results of an election if they don\u2019t like\u200d the winner,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/webservices.ncleg.gov\/ViewBillDocument\/2023\/7382\/0\/S749-BILL-NBC-11457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a\u200d Sept. 28 statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a serious threat to our democracy,\u200c particularly after the\u2064 nation just saw a presidential candidate try to strongarm state officials into reversing his losing election\u2062 results. Courts have already ruled the\u200b ideas in this bill unconstitutional, and \u200dvoters \u200doverwhelmingly said no\u200d when the legislature tried to change the constitution,\u201d \u2062Cooper\u2062 exclaimed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>SB\u200c 749\u2063 was not \u2062the only veto that the legislature overrode.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans also overrode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ncs-dem-governor-protects-non-citizen-voters-2020-election-nears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooper\u2019s<\/a> attempt to stop a bill that puts a limit on the period of time that an absentee ballot can\u200c be received before it no longer counts.<\/p>\n<p>Left-wing activists \u200dclaim \u200cthat \u200bSenate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/BillLookUp\/2023\/s747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill\u2063 747<\/a> would result in fewer votes being \u2063counted. Cooper \u200cvetoed \u2063that measure in Sept., <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/4184299-north-carolina-bill-could-change-voting-rules-if-state-gop-majority-overrides-veto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> \u200d added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/report-democrats-full-panic-mode-scrambling-find-replacement-biden-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooper<\/a> accused the Republicans of grasping for power instead of working for election integrity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation \u200chas nothing to do with \u2064election security and everything to do with Republicans keeping and gaining\u200c power,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cIt requires valid votes to\u2063 be tossed out unnecessarily, schemes to restrict\u2062 early voting and absentee ballots, encourages voter intimidation and attempts \u200cto give\u200c Republican \u2064legislators the authority to decide \u2063contested election results.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>GOP\u2063 State Rep. Grey Mills disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u2062 one thing \u200cthis bill does do is it does\u2063 improve voting in elections for the entire \u2063state. It\u2019s not killing early voting \u2014 we\u2019re improving early \u200dvoting,\u201d Mills\u2062 said.<\/p>\n<p>Election integrity \u200cactivist Cleta Mitchell helped Republicans add a provision in the bill to\u200c allow election observers to listen to \u200dconversations between voters and election workers and take notes about what they heard.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal activists hyperbolically\u200c claimed that \u2063the measures raise the specter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-utah-police-take-stand-cartoon-linking-law-enforcement-kkk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KKK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter opposing the \u2063measures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/huge-win-for-election-integrity-north-carolina-republicans-override-democratic-governors-veto\/\" title=\"Major victory for election integrity: North Carolina GOP overrides Dem governor's veto.\">left-wing\u2062 groups including<\/a> the ACLU\u2063 of North Carolina,\u2063 Common\u200b Cause North Carolina,\u200c NC Voters \u2063for Clean\u2064 Elections,\u200b and the NAACP North\u200c Carolina crosses\u200b the line into an opportunity for \u200dvoter intimidation and suppression, reminiscent of Reconstruction-era tactics \u200dby the Ku Klux Klan,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ncnewsline.com\/briefs\/nc-gov-cooper-to-veto-expansive-gop-elections-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NC Newsline<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats always oppose any measure to clean up \u200dour election systems.\u2062 And it is \u2063telling that they \u200dare upset that\u200b there \u200bcould\u2063 be a bipartisan board\u2062 governing elections instead of them being controlled by \u2062the \u200dDemocrats.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"author_subscription_pitch\">.author_subscription_pitch \u2064p{margin:5px;}<\/p>\n<p><em><b>A Note from Our Staff:<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did you know that 90 percent of\u200c advertisers will have nothing \u200cto\u2064 do with The Western Journal?
