The eight-episode series also rose\u200c to the No. 1 spot on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/one-piece-season-renewed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> \u2062 globally with 37.8 million views in less \u200bthan two weeks\u200d of its release, allowing for a second season to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone\u200d seems to be loving \u201cOne\u2063 Piece\u201d for the most part based on the streaming numbers, but that\u2019s not \u2062to say there haven\u2019t been some detractors \u2014 \u200cparticularly \u2062feminist\u200c ones.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, there is \u2062one line of dialogue in the show that sent feminists reeling: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cGirls can beat \u2063boys, but\u2064 no woman can beat a \u200cman.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now I\u2019m \u200dno feminist, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear a character deliver that line unironically.<\/p>\n<p>For context, it \u200bwas used\u2063 in a flashback scene where one of\u2064 the main\u2063 characters, Zoro, \u2062fought\u2062 a girl named \u200dKuina to prove his worth in sword fighting. A young Zoro kept losing to her, \u2062but Kuina knew she wouldn\u2019t continue winning as they grew older.\u200d He would eventually outperform her in \u200b\u201csize, strength and speed,\u201d as she said, \u2062highlighting the biological differences \u2063between men and women and how that \u200bdynamic plays\u200d in a fight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bold statement, \u2064but it\u2019s the truth.<\/p>\n<p>A brash Zoro couldn\u2019t accept \u200cit at the time, and he\u2064 would\u2063 only realize that truth\u2062 as he aged. Still, both make a vow to continue training together until one becomes the\u200b world\u2019s \u200bgreatest swordsman \u2014 a promise that Zoro carries throughout the first season.<\/p>\n<h3>Would \u2062you watch \u201cOne\u200b Piece\u201d?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Yes<\/li>\n<li>No<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kuina\u2019s admission directly opposes the \u201cstrong female character\u201d trope that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/top-hollywood-website-hit-scandal-calling-reviews-doubt-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood<\/a> loves to insert anywhere\u2063 it can, and \u2064this is all thanks to the original creator\u2019s involvement in the live-action adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s unknown whether there was\u2063 any creative disagreement over \u2064the line, Eiichiro Oda reassured\u200b \u201cOne Piece\u201d fans \u201cthere\u2063 were\u2062 no compromises on this show\u201d with\u2062 Netflix or the production studio. \u200d\u201cEven after the shoot was over, there\u200d were numerous scenes the production agreed\u200c to re-shoot because I felt they weren\u2019t good enough to put out into the world,\u201d he wrote\u2062 in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/galleries\/one-piece-oda-letters?mediaIndex=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In another, he even said Netflix \u201cwon\u2019t launch \u2063it until I\u2019m satisfied.\u201d Oda serves as an executive producer on the series.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely the live-action \u201cOne\u200b Piece\u201d remained so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/coming-crown-non-woke-studio-looks-dethrone-disney-princesses-series-films-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-woke<\/a> throughout \u200bproduction because his creative control steered the production crew in \u200dthe right direction. Without him in\u2062 that role, there\u2019s a very good \u2063chance \u200dthe \u201cno woman can beat\u200b a man\u201d line wouldn\u2019t have made it into the final product.<\/p>\n<p>Moving on\u2063 from that one scene\u2063 and Oda\u2019s hands-on involvement, \u200bNetflix\u2019s \u201cOne Piece\u201d is a fantastic show that prioritizes \u200bstorytelling \u200bover propaganda and satisfying \u200bcharacter arcs over uninspired acting performances. And it\u2019s all because the series is written superbly well.<\/p>\n<p>The story never \u200dgets stale or boring because characters drive the plot forward instead of the plot\u200b driving\u200d the characters. Each character has distinct, \u2063believable motivations that audiences\u2063 can understand and empathize with because \u2064the series takes its\u2062 time to show their emotional backstories.<\/p>\n<p>Although \u2063the world is fantastical (as indicated by\u2062 the protagonist\u2019s stretchy powers and the existence of \u200da fish-men gang),\u200c it\u2019s oddly not ridiculous and laughable. Rather, you take the whimsical world seriously because the characters don\u2019t question it.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, \u2064the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/candace-owens-shreds-netflix-says-return-emmys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> original\u200c is just plain \u200bold fun that isn\u2019t\u200b concerned \u2063with shoving a \u200cmessage down your throat. Instead, the narrative\u2062 is entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne Piece\u201d follows the\u200d adventures of young captain Monkey D.
