Gavin Newsom and other state leaders over what\u2019s being called the \u201cSkittles ban\u201d \u2014 which would prohibit the sale of any candy in California that\u2019s made with red dye No. 3 \u2014 amid the state\u2019s persistent rise in crime and homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-year-old actor posted on Monday on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mariolopezviva\/status\/1711565605646770412?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a> in response to a headline that read, \u201cCalifornia becomes the first U.S. state to ban Skittles and 12,000 additional products for cancer-causing additives\u201d after Newsom signed the California Food Safety Act, Assembly <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billStatusClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill 418<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrime is through the roof, worst drug epidemic ever &#038; homelessness at an all time high in CA\u2026 Let\u2019s focus on Skittles,\u201d Lopez wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Crime is through the roof, worst drug epidemic ever &#038; homelessness at an all time high in CA\u2026 Let\u2019s focus on Skittles <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ohWQcUcQjf\">pic.twitter.com\/ohWQcUcQjf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mario Lopez (@mariolopezviva) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mariolopezviva\/status\/1711565605646770412?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 10, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The bill will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/09\/health\/california-governor-bans-red-dye-no-3-wellness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibit<\/a> the sale, distribution, or manufacture of food products containing red dye No. 3, brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, and propylparaben \u2014 ingredients that can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/2023\/10\/california-first-state-enact-ban-four-harmful-chemicals-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> in candy, cereal, soda, and other processed food sold and produced in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The chair of the state Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection, Jesse Gabriel, praised the move by the governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Governor\u2019s signature today represents a huge step forward in our effort to protect children and families in California from dangerous and toxic chemicals in our food supply,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/2023\/10\/california-first-state-enact-ban-four-harmful-chemicals-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gabriel<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that the U.S. is so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to food safety,\u201d he added. \u201cThis bill will not ban any foods or products \u2013 it simply will require food companies to make minor modifications to their recipes and switch to the safer alternative ingredients that they already use in Europe and so many other places around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Red dye No. 3 is used in candies like Skittles, Trolli gummies, and Nerds, along with instant rice and potato products, boxed cake mixes, and some protein shakes, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/foodscores\/ingredients\/19151-RED3\/search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Working Group\u2019s Eat Well Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s ban mimics Europe\u2019s, where these four chemicals, \u201cdue to scientific studies that have demonstrated significant public health harms, including increased risk of cancer, behavioral issues in children, harm to the reproductive system, and damage to the immune system,\u201d are already banned.
