Bob Menendez (D-NJ) is currently contemplating his\u200b reelection bid, which has sparked a \u200bstrong response from the majority \u2063of Senate\u200d Democrats who are urging him to step \u2062down. Concerned about the potential consequences of \u200ca reelection campaign, his Democratic colleagues fear that it could result in \u200cthe Republican Party gaining a Senate seat in the highly contested 2024 race.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere is something like a 0 percent chance he would \u200bbe able to get the nomination,\u201d\u200b an\u2064 anonymous senator told \u2063Politico. \u201cHe\u2019s a dead man\u200b walking, politically.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sen. Sherrod Brown \u2064(D-OH), the second \u200csenator \u2062to call for Menendez&#8217;s resignation, expressed \u200chis hope that Menendez would choose \u200bnot to run. However, if he does decide to proceed with his reelection bid, Brown believes that Menendez will ultimately lose.<\/p>\n<p>While more than half of Senate Democrats have demanded Menendez&#8217;s resignation, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has taken a different approach by\u200b encouraging potential candidates to challenge\u2062 Menendez in \u2062the primary.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf he would be foolish enough to \u200crun for reelection,\u201d Fetterman \u200bsaid, \u201cI\u200d will be actively assisting anyone that\u2019s running against him in the primary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fetterman has even \u200dgone as\u2063 far as submitting a fundraising \u200bappeal for Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ), \u2063a strong contender in the Democratic primary \u200cagainst Menendez.<\/p>\n<p>When\u2062 asked about his timeline\u200d for making a\u200d decision regarding the 2024 election, Menendez responded defiantly to Politico, stating, \u201cI don\u2019t have to answer to you people &#8230; I will tell the people of New Jersey \u200dwhen I\u2019m ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If\u2064 Menendez chooses\u200b to ignore the warnings from his fellow senators, he may face a\u2064 competitive race, according to National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT).<\/p>\n<p>Among the potential challengers for the Senate seat is Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), a \u2062prominent figure in the New Jersey \u2064Republican Party who switched parties in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez and his wife\u2062 Nadine Menendez were indicted on allegations of accepting bribes and gifts from businessmen in exchange for providing aid to the \u200cEgyptian\u2063 government.
