Elections Board (DCBOE).<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, DCBOE <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Vote4DC\/status\/1710381502268113204?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> it had \u201cbecome aware\u201d that RansomVC, a hacking group, was\u2062 claiming it had \u201cbreached DCBOE\u2019s\u2063 records and accessed 600,000 \u2064lines of \u2062US voter data, \u2064including DC voter \u200brecords.\u201d \u2064In its initial inquiry into the matter, the board confirmed the authenticity of the breach, acknowledging that records were accessed and the incident occurred \u200cthrough DCBOE\u2019s web server,\u2062 DataNet.<\/p>\n<p>While the \u200dboard claimed no \u201cinternal DCBOE databases or\u200c servers were directly compromised,\u201d\u2064 DCBOE officials additionally announced they are collaborating with\u200d the \u200dFBI, Department of Homeland Security,\u2063 and other federal offices \u200cto probe the matter. In the \u200dmeantime, \u200dDCBOE has closed down its website until \u200cfurther notice and conducted \u201cvulnerability scans\u201d on \u200cits IT networks, servers, and databases.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2023\/10\/06\/dc-elections-board-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>, RansomVC (or RansomedVC) attempted to sell the aforementioned data on the \u2064dark\u2064 web, as\u200b well as on an online \u2062hacking forum. Portions of \u200bthe published data analyzed by the outlet \u201cshowed\u2064 what the group claimed \u2063was one D.C. voter\u2019s\u2063 full name, address, contact information and\u2064 driver\u2019s license number, and part of\u2064 their Social\u200b Security number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Vote4DC\/status\/1710381502268113204?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> in \u200cDCBOE\u2019s Friday announcement,\u2064 voter\u2063 data \u2014 including voter\u200c names, party affiliation, and addresses \u2014 is\u200b information already available\u2063 to\u2064 the public. But \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/23\/10\/09\/dc-board-of-elections-voter-information-data-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other data<\/a>, such as social security numbers, birth dates, and contact \u2063information, is not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDCBOE continues to assess the full extent\u2062 of the \u200bbreach, identify vulnerabilities, and take\u200c appropriate \u200dmeasures to secure voter data and systems,\u201d the board \u2063said in its Friday statement.<\/p>\n<p>DCBOE is hardly the only government-affiliated department in Washington to become a\u200c victim of hacking. In <a href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/23\/10\/09\/dc-board-of-elections-voter-information-data-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent years<\/a>, agencies and sites such \u2063as D.C.
