As the vote for the \u2062successor to former Speaker Kevin McCarthy approaches, Republicans are considering a rule change that \u2062would \u200brequire a candidate to secure 217 or \u2063218 votes before being brought to the floor for a vote. Currently, only a majority of Republicans is\u2064 needed to choose a speaker candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Study Committee\u2063 Chairman Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma believes that this rule change \u200bmight be necessary to streamline the\u2062 process. He stated, &#8220;The American people are pretty weary right\u2064 now on chaos, if you will. I \u200cdon&#8217;t know that it&#8217;s healthy for the American morale to see chaos in the Middle East, chaos in Israel, and then chaos here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But in the \u2062House \u200bRepublican \u200dconference, everything is contested.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think we ought to be\u2062 changing rules in the middle of an election,&#8221; Republican Rep. Steve Womack\u200d of Arkansas said. &#8220;I just don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s \u2063wise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also think there is some wisdom of having members have their surnames called out, and have to \u200c&#8230; declare it\u2064 to everybody. Secret ballot accomplishes very little,\u200b you know, other than gives you an opportunity to freely express yourself without being made known,&#8221; he\u2064 added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Republican Rep.
