However, his performance in the postseason \u2064has always been a cause for \u200cconcern.<\/p>\n<p>This strange contrast has cast a shadow over Kershaw&#8217;s otherwise Hall of Fame-worthy career. Unfortunately for him, that shadow \u200dmay have\u2062 grown\u2063 even darker after a historically bad playoff outing on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>In Game 1 of the 2023 National League Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks,\u200c the Dodgers suffered a crushing 11-2 defeat. The Dodgers were already facing a 5-0 deficit \u2064before \u200deven getting an out. It was a performance that could go down as one of the\u200c worst in MLB history.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Kershaw was pulled from the game after giving up one more run and one more hit. This marked the first time in his 454 career starts that he failed to make it out of the first inning.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Kershaw was devastated by\u200d his performance. &#8220;Disappointing. Embarrassing. You just\u200b feel like you\u2064 let everybody down,&#8221; he said after the game.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the disappointment, Kershaw&#8217;s\u2063 chances of redeeming himself may be slim.\u2063 The NLDS is a best-of-five series, \u200cand if the Dodgers lose the \u2062next two games, Kershaw won&#8217;t even get a chance to pitch in Game 4.<\/p>\n<p>At\u200d 35 years old, Kershaw&#8217;s future in the game is uncertain. He has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career, and retirement rumors have been swirling around him for some time.<\/p>\n<p>On top of his\u2063 personal struggles, \u2063the Dodgers \u2062have faced\u2064 their fair share of challenges this season. The Dodgers now face a 2-0 deficit \u200bin the \u200dseries and are on the \u2064brink of elimination. If they fail to come back and win, it\u200b will be yet another postseason\u2064 disappointment for \u2063Kershaw and the Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the\u2064 first time Kershaw has struggled in the playoffs. Throughout his illustrious career, he has had his fair share of playoff meltdowns. His postseason ERA of 4.43 \u2064is significantly higher \u200bthan his regular season ERA of 2.47. While he has had some strong playoff performances,\u200d it is the \u200cbad ones that seem to stick in everyone&#8217;s minds.<\/p>\n<p>The question remains, \u2063why \u200ddoes Kershaw \u2062struggle in the postseason? Some speculate\u2062 that it is a mental \u2062issue, as the\u200b pressure of October baseball can be overwhelming. Others \u2062believe\u2063 it is simply a matter of small \u2064sample size and bad luck. Regardless\u2062 of the reason,\u200c it \u2062is\u2062 clear that Kershaw&#8217;s playoff struggles \u2062have become a defining narrative of his career.<\/p>\n<p>It is\u2063 worth noting that Kershaw&#8217;s playoff struggles should not overshadow all \u200bof his other accomplishments. He is a three-time Cy Young Award\u2064 winner, and\u200b he has been named an All-Star eight times. He\u2064 has consistently been one \u200bof \u2063the best pitchers \u2064in the\u200c game for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2063the postseason is where legacies are \u200dforged, and Kershaw&#8217;s struggles in October will\u2063 always be a part\u200d of his\u200b legacy. It is a\u2062 shame that one bad outing can overshadow a career \u200cof excellence, but that is the nature\u2063 of sports.<\/p>\n<p>Only time will \u200dtell if Kershaw\u200d will be able to \u2064redeem himself in future playoffs. The Dodgers have a talented \u2064roster\u2063 and will likely be contenders for\u200d years to come.
