She \u200dpurportedly described him to friends \u2063and family \u200das a little cold\u2064 and curt.<\/p>\n<p>New\u200d York wasn&#8217;t \u2064really his scene, and \u200cBankman-Fried soon traded in life on the East Coast for the West,\u2062 where he \u200bstarted \u200ddrumming up plans for \u200cAlameda \u2062Research, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ftx-executives-reportedly-bought-themselves-real-estate-in-the-bahamas-with-corporate-funds\/\" title=\"FTX Executives Reportedly Bought Themselves Real Estate In The Bahamas With Corporate Funds\">cryptocurrency trading firm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ellison, who had \u200cgraduated from Stanford University with a degree\u200b in mathematics, moved to the East Coast, where\u200c she worked for Jane Street. When\u200b her bosses sent her to her alma mater\u2062 on a\u200d recruiting trip in fall \u20632017, she \u200blooked up \u200cBankman-Fried, and the two met for coffee in Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>He told her he was working on something he couldn&#8217;t \u200creally\u2064 talk about but then started talking. By the end of their caffeinated chat, he had almost convinced her to join him on his new venture, according to a new\u2062 book by Michael Lewis, Going \u200bInfinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2018, Ellison kissed both her Jane Street job and New \u2063York\u2064 goodbye\u2063 and moved to\u200b the\u200d Bay Area to work for Bankman-Fried.<\/p>\n<p>Ellison has claimed she was shocked\u2062 when she showed up at Alameda offices. Bankman-Fried had hired about 20 people \u200cwho knew nothing about trading or cared all that \u200bmuch about crypto. But \u200binstead of heading home, she\u200c decided to stick it out.<\/p>\n<p>Ellison\u2064 quickly\u2063 moved up the ranks and was named co-CEO \u2063of\u200c Alameda. It\u200c was\u2062 during this time she was also\u2062 linked romantically to Bankman-Fried, a self-proclaimed math nerd who routinely demanded his workers put \u2063in 18-hour days and played video games in front \u200dof them\u200d when they complained.<\/p>\n<p>Less than two years after getting\u200c Alameda \u200cResearch off the ground, Bankman-Fried and \u200chis buddy Gary \u200cWang\u2063 launched FTX as a platform to trade \u200ccrypto\u200d tokens and derivatives. By October 2021, \u200dFTX was soaring and\u200b managed to raise \u2062$420 million in venture trading.<\/p>\n<p>As Bankman-Fried&#8217;s star rose \u2014 he hobnobbed with celebrities such \u200das pop star Katy Perry\u200b and her husband Orlando Bloom and \u2063made it onto the Forbes billionaires list \u2014 Ellison was going back and forth about their relationship. The two had dated on and off, and, according to private writings shown to the New York Times, \u2063Ellison was worried about \u2063&#8221;making \u200dthings\u2064 weird&#8221; and &#8220;causing drama&#8221; at work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t really feel like there&#8217;s an end in \u2064sight,&#8221; she wrote in a February 2022 document.<\/p>\n<p>By \u200bthe end of the year, Ellison, her boyfriend-boss, and other higher-ups in the company \u2062would\u2062 be under \u2062arrest\u200b and\u200b tangled in one of \u2064the biggest financial\u200d fraud \u200cscandals in U.S. \u200bhistory.<\/p>\n<p>Federal \u200cprosecutors \u2063claim Bankman-Fried \u200csiphoned\u2062 billions of dollars \u200dfrom unsuspecting customers to fund a\u2063 lavish lifestyle and then lied to cover his tracks, and they said \u2064Ellison helped\u200c him do it.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried is facing seven criminal charges, including money laundering and securities fraud. If\u200c he \u2063is convicted on all of the charges against him, he could \u2062be sentenced to 110 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Four of his friends, including Ellison, have already pleaded guilty to\u2062 similar\u2064 charges.
