(Mei Lee\/The Epoch\u200c Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The same \u2063month,\u2062 it also adopted a policy allowing only the \u2062U.S. and state \u2064flags to be flown on \u2063district and school flag poles\u2014which critics called homophobic, saying\u200d it was a\u2062 move to ban LGBT Pride flags from being displayed in classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200dSeptember, the school board also passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/6th-california-school-district-adopts-policy-to-notify-parents-of-childs-gender-status-change-5488709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-ag-sues-school-district-over-policy-notifying-parents-of-childs-gender-status-change\/\" title=\"CA AG sues school district for not informing parents of child's gender change.\">parent notification policy<\/a><\/a> that will\u2064 require schools to notify parents if their child identifies as transgender, amid a statewide debate over the\u200c issue.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these moves, Ms. Miner told The Epoch Times she believed there was more work to be done\u200d within the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile \u2064these are significant strides made during my \u2062tenure, our work to restore Orange Unified to its former glory and potential is not yet complete,\u201d she said. \u201cThat&#8217;s why I \u2062pledge to focus my\u2063 efforts on fixing \u2062our curriculum in the upcoming months and ensuring that our\u2063 students receive a valuable education \u2062marked by quality and excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Miner also said she believed the recall effort \u200dis spearheaded \u200bby the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/parents-outraged-4th-5th-graders-asked-to-join-queer-club-without-their-consent\/\" title=\"Parents Outraged: 4th-5th Graders Asked to Join Queer Club Without Their Consent\">local teachers\u2019 union<\/a>, the Orange Unified Education Association, in a \u201cquest for power\u201d over the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s essential to note that protecting\u200d students is my sole purpose, and the radical recall movement has made it clear that their\u200c quest for power over\u200c the children is nothing more than a strong\u200c political maneuver\u2063 to influence and shape the\u200c children of [Orange Unified],\u201d she said. \u201cThis has nothing to do\u200c with protecting \u2062or educating children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u200b Orange Unified Education \u200bAssociation was not immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"image-url\" alt=\"Orange Unified School Board President Rick Ledesma speaks at a board meeting in Orange, Calif., on Sept. 7, 2023.\"><figcaption>Orange Unified School Board President Rick Ledesma speaks\u200d at\u200d a \u200cboard meeting \u200din Orange, Calif., on Sept. 7, 2023. She stated, &#8220;It&#8217;s about representation. It&#8217;s about\u2064 accountability. It&#8217;s\u2063 about communication. It&#8217;s\u200d about \u200ctransparency. And it&#8217;s about relationships.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The recall campaign has gained support from various community members, \u2062including\u2064 parents, teachers, and \u2064community leaders. They argue that the conservative\u2063 members of the \u200dboard do not properly \u2063represent the diverse community\u200c of Orange Unified School District and have made decisions that\u2064 do not align with \u2062the values and needs of the students and families in the district.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers\u200c of the recall campaign \u2062have expressed \u2063their hope that \u2062if\u200d a recall election is held, it will provide an opportunity for the community to choose new board members who will prioritize the well-being\u200d and success of the students. They believe that a change\u200c in leadership is necessary to create a more inclusive and \u2063supportive educational environment for all students.<\/p>\n<p>The conservative members of \u2063the board, however, have defended their decisions and their commitment to serving the community. They argue \u200cthat \u200dthe controversial \u200cdecisions were \u2062made in the best interest of the students and\u200c were \u2062necessary to uphold the values and policies of the district. They believe that the recall campaign\u200d is politically motivated and aims to undermine \u200dthe\u2063 work they have done for the district.<\/p>\n<p>As the OC Registrar of Voters validates the signatures\u200b submitted by the recall campaign,\u2063 the community anxiously waits\u200d to see\u2063 if\u2062 a recall election will\u2063 be\u200d scheduled. If the required number of signatures\u2062 is validated, the Orange Unified School Board will have to face the decision of the community and potentially undergo significant changes in its\u2064 composition.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of \u200bthe outcome, the\u200b recall campaign\u200b has highlighted the importance of community engagement and the role of elected officials in representing the diverse needs and values of the community.
