However, Taiwan\u2064 has\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-will-invade-taiwan-unless-convinced-peaceful-unification-possible-experts\/\" title=\"Experts warn that China may invade Taiwan unless they believe peaceful unification is achievable.\">maintained\u2063 de facto independence<\/a> since 1949.<\/p>\n<p>CCP\u2064 leader Xi Jinping \u200dhas linked the unification of China and Taiwan to his goal of making China the world&#8217;s leading\u2062 superpower by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the CCP&#8217;s takeover.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    Because of this, Mr. Sbragia warns that as the 2049 deadline approaches or if unification\u2063 becomes unattainable, the regime will become increasingly likely to initiate a war for Taiwan. <\/p>\n<h2><b>Conflict Could Be &#8216;Inevitable&#8217;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>  The 2049 goal creates a &#8220;timeline for conflict,&#8221; a countdown where hostilities become more likely the longer peaceful unification is delayed.<br \/>\n \u2063\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Every \u2062day that\u200b we move forward, this \u200cproblem \u200cgets worse. It \u2063doesn&#8217;t get better,&#8221; Mr. Sbragia\u2064 stated.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, Mr. Sbragia\u2062 added that the CCP would\u200c not be\u2062 deterred from\u2062 military\u200d action even if victory seems unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sbragia, \u200bformer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-ex-doe-official-sam-brinton-was-on-taxpayer-funded-trip-during-luggage-burglary\/\" title=\"Biden's ex-DOE official, Sam Brinton, on taxpayer-funded trip during luggage theft.\">deputy \u2063assistant secretary<\/a> of defense for China, recalled Chinese\u2064 military leadership expressing this sentiment\u2063 during \u2062his tenure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t \u2064assume that because\u200b we&#8217;ll lose, we won&#8217;t \u2063go,&#8221; Mr. \u2064Sbragia paraphrased Chinese military leadership.<\/p>\n<p>These circumstances \u200dcreate a situation of\u2062 &#8220;progressively worsening\u2063 conditions over time&#8221; for China, Taiwan, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;China&#8217;s adherence to\u200c a timeline\u2063 for unification will ultimately take priority over war \u200bavoidance, and \u2063until \u200bthen, \u200dTaiwan will remain a source \u200cof chronic crisis,&#8221; Mr. \u200bSbragia warned. <\/p>\n<h2><b>Washington Must \u2063Affirm Support for Peace<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>  \u200b To address\u200b this, the United States should work to convince China that peaceful unification \u200cis possible or, at the very least, not signal that it is impossible, according to Bonnie Glaser, \u2063a managing director for the German Marshall Fund think tank.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I agree that if Xi Jinping believes there is a real possibility of permanent loss of\u2064 Taiwan, he would go\u200d to war whether \u2064the\u2062 military is ready \u2064or not,&#8221;\u2062 Ms. \u2063Glaser stated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is \u200bunwise for \u200bboth Taiwan \u2063and\u2063 the United States to pursue policies that would lead Xi \u200dJinping to \u200cconclude\u200d that achieving a mutually acceptable outcome is \u2062impossible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, she warned that the CCP \u200cwould invade Taiwan\u2062 regardless \u2063of cost if it believes the island is\u200d on a clear path to declaring\u200d independence and that the United States supports it.<\/p>\n<p>In such circumstances, Mr. Xi would feel compelled to &#8220;go to war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Ms.\u200b Glaser noted that there is still a \u200ctenuous belief within the \u200bCCP that peaceful unification is \u200cpossible,\u200d meaning that\u200d war\u200b is not yet \u200binevitable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Xi\u200c Jinping\u2062 still holds on to\u2062 the idea that there\u2062 is\u200c a pathway toward\u2064 integration, then ultimately he will \u2064be making a calculation. What \u2064are the costs? What are the benefits?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want him to conclude that\u200d it is absolutely impossible to achieve unification peacefully \u2062or without force,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Ms. Glaser\u2064 expressed\u2062 concern that the Biden administration has not affirmed its \u200csupport for \u200dany peaceful \u200cresolution to the crisis, deviating from the precedent set by previous administrations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In prior administrations, the United States has said that we would support any outcome that \u2063is peacefully \u2062negotiated between the\u2062 two sides of\u200d the Strait,&#8221; \u200cMs. Glaser said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This \u2064administration has \u200dnot made that statement.
