(Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, \u200cwho was the\u2062 prime mover behind getting McCarthy removed, even voted for \u200cTrump \u2063during the seventh round of speaker-voting during\u200b January\u2019s contentious election of \u200cMcCarthy.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been asked to \u200bspeak as\u2063 a unifier\u2062 because I have so many friends in Congress,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t get the vote,\u201d he said, \u201cthey have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody \u2064longer-term, because I\u200c am\u2063 running for president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have asked me if\u2064 I \u200cwould take it for a short period of time for \u200bthe party, \u200duntil\u200b they come to a conclusion \u200b\u2014\u2062 I\u2019m not doing\u200d it\u200c because I want to \u2014 I will\u2064 do it if necessary, should\u200c they not be\u200c able to make their\u2064 decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Nehls had put Trump in as a long-term replacement for McCarthy, the former \u200dpresident made it clear that he wouldn\u2019t be doing that.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, if the party couldn\u2019t\u2064 come to a consensus on who should replace \u200dthe outgoing speaker \u2014 the two main candidates\u2062 are \u2062Jordan and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, both seen \u2063as considerably to the right of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/next-rumors-swirl-candidates-emerge-house-speaker-following-mccarthys-ouster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McCarthy<\/a> \u2063\u2014 on a short-term \u201c30, 60,\u200b or 90-day period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would only do it for the party,\u201d the former president added.<\/p>\n<p>There aren\u2019t many\u2064 rules as to who can or can\u2019t \u2063serve as speaker; one doesn\u2019t even need to be a \u200dmember of the House but simply can be\u2063 nominated by a House member and chosen with \u2062a majority of House votes.<\/p>\n<p>However, the House Republican Conference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gop-house-rule-26-bar-trump-becoming-speaker-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules<\/a> state that\u2064 a \u201cmember of the Republican Leadership\u2062 shall step aside if indicted for a felony for which a sentence\u2064 of two or more years imprisonment may be \u2062imposed.\u201d Considering the numerous felony\u200d indictments \u2062that \u200dTrump is under, that would generally be considered disqualifying.<\/p>\n<p>But internal party rules can just as easily be made as they can \u2063be \u2062ignored. As Newt Gingrich pointed out in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/10\/03\/newt-gingrich-matt-gaetz-remove\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a> Op-Ed calling for Gaetz\u2019s expulsion for calling the speaker vote in the first place, those same rules say the motion to vacate the speaker\u2019s chair \u201cshould only \u200dbe available\u2064 with the agreement of the Republican \u200cConference so as to \u200cnot allow\u2064 Democrats to \u2064choose the Speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, Gaetz more or less relied on Democrats to chase McCarthy from his post \u2014 and while there are certain corners of conservativedom braying like\u200c wounded animals\u200b over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lauren-boebert-scolds-childish-republicans-plotting-remove-matt-gaetz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaetz\u2019s move<\/a>, Gingrich included, the House GOP seems more interested in what comes next than flaying\u2064 the Florida firebrand\u2019s political career.<\/p>\n<p>Given that Gaetz remains more \u2063controversial than Trump \u2014 in part thanks to the nakedly\u2062 political nature of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-psychology-behind-cnns-implosion\/\" title=\"The Psychology Behind CNN\u2019s Implosion\">drip-drip-drip<\/a> of indictments against the former president \u2014 \u2062this, too, would likely be ignored if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jim-jordan-opens-biden-impeachment-inquiry-blistering-statement-tale-old-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neither Jordan<\/a> \u2064 nor Scalise could \u2063make it to a majority of votes.<\/p>\n<p>That said, Trump\u2019s endorsement of \u200cJordan \u200bshould do a lot to clear up the race for the speaker\u2019s chair, \u2062given the former president\u2019s power and popularity \u200bwithin the\u200d party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongressman Jim Jordan\u200c has been a\u200d STAR long before making \u200chis very successful journey to \u2062Washington, D.C., representing Ohio\u2019s 4th Congressional District. He\u200c is STRONG on Crime, Borders,\u200c our Military\/Vets, &#038; 2nd Amendment. \u2063Jim, his\u2064 wife, Polly,\u200c &#038; family are outstanding \u2013 He will be a GREAT Speaker of \u2063the House, \u2063&#038; has my Complete &#038; Total Endorsement!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Politico confirmed\u200c that Trump had relayed\u2063 his \u200bendorsement to Nehls before it \u200cwas made \u2014 perhaps a sign he\u2019d\u200d rather not step into the \u2062role.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u200das\u2063 a stopgap measure, being back in a position of official power would hardly hurt Trump any.<\/p>\n<p>Without appearing at\u200d a\u2062 single Republican debate, the former president holds a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2024\/president\/us\/2024_republican_presidential_nomination-7548.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comfortable lead<\/a> over his GOP opposition in the 2024 presidential race and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2024\/president\/us\/general-election-trump-vs-biden-7383.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roughly even<\/a> with President Joe Biden in the polls.<\/p>\n<p>While a 90-day pause in his campaigning would make\u2064 him less ready to \u2063immediately respond to any major shift in these numbers, it would\u2063 also put him front-and-center in\u2062 the \u200dnews \u2014 and in a \u200bway that has nothing to do with his \u200bcourt cases and \u200cwould rankle Biden to the core.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, virtually everything involving the House speakership operates along a wait-and-see model, and the lower\u2064 chamber is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/matt-gaetz-has-achieved-nothing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adjourned<\/a> until next week.
